Nathan Chen

This reminds me of something I noticed during these Olympics but forgot to mention amidst all the ups and downs. Watching his various practice videos his 3A technique has really changed and improved since we last saw him. There’s a much better kick takeoff and hang time, and he no longer looks like he’s just rotating in one spot. It looks very promising!

Jackie mentioned his 3A is getting better during this OG practice as well, it does fly longer on the jumping pass distance. Also Nathan said in interview this disaster in this OG is 30% technical (I think he is talking about his leg injury) and 70% mental, I think the 3A mistakes are one kinda mental thing. His 3A during long actually is not as good as the ones he landed in practice.
Jackie watched OG practice and I think after evaluate every practice Jackie did thought Nathan is the strongest and predicted he is gonna win. Oh well. jinx him..

Hi guys, I am selling men's free(silver)/gala(gold) Worlds tickets if anyone wants to buy it. just posted here because I realised Nathan is in the entries list. price can be negotiated

As for whether or not Nathan is over scored in OG, I will only list a few facts and quotes from famous people in international figure skating community

fact: Nathan’s FS TES, PCS gap is 40.2 which is perhaps the largest gap ever in figure skating history.

google translate of comments about Nathan:
“Six quads Chen in an arbitrary - something incredible! Nobody ever did this! The jumps are frenzied and very beautiful. It is important that he not only jumps, but also knows how to rotate, everything is in order with artistry. It is strange that the arbitrators underestimated his second assessment. The difference of 30 points between equipment and components is wrong. I think in America the kid should be rewarded. At least literacy. And better - write a premium.” Actually the difference is more than 30 is 40.2

from retired Chinese pair skater world champion Jian Tong (male partner of famous Chinese pair P/T) CCTV commentary of Nathan’s FS link: https://m.weibo.cn/status/4208365482246224
“这位选手可以完成各种不同的舞蹈编排,从他脚下的弹性来讲,他做所有的步伐都是带有韧性的,包括跳跃”“我敢肯定,如果他在最后一组出场的话,可能分数还要突破””就像佟健说的,如果他最后一组上的话,五大项肯定全上9了””这是一套不可思议非常完整的一套作品”
English translation
“this skater can perform various choreo of different kinds, from the elasticity aspect of his feet, all his blade work is performed with tenacity/bounciness including his jumps””I am very sure, if he skated in the last group, his score will be even higher””Just like Jian Tong said if he skated in the last group, all his five components score should be above 9s” “this is an incredibly very complete/integrated performance ”

Tatsuki Machida comments about Nathan’s OG

“Nathan Chen has achieved the 6-quads FS that no humanbeing has ever done, the most difficult program in human history, I’m afraid perhaps Nathan himself cannot repeat this with similar difficult as well as amazing performance in the future” “On top of historical 6 quads difficult lay-out, actually his performance also improved, for example in this stsq, music is based on “the rite of spring“ he expressed the feeling and style of modern dance as well as contemporary dance, I can totally see his understanding and interpretation, just like this, combined technique with performance, Nathan athlete in the future will for sure get more recognition

Kurt Browning commentary on CBC
not just jumpers, just a new generation, cos there is skating, there is musicality, there is spins there is a whole program, when you can do all of that and 5 quads, pretty much all done beautifully, I am in awe of what we just saw, the olympics does provide stories of come backs and perseverance, to come back from not one bad but 2 bad short programs to skate what might be one of the most memorable long programs in olympic history from 17th in short this is an amazing moment.”

I dare to say, if Nathan was a russian, he would be on the podium.
Sorry, USFS is not a strong fed anymore.

I thought we are talking about judging. I used to think US is just as influential as Russia in the judging department. Looks like it's not the case anymore. Maybe because figure skating as a biz has declined so much in the last decade.

For what it’s worth, my initial impression of Hanyu wasn’t exactly positive, and I didn’t become a fan of his skating until around 2016, but I also really like Nathan and am certainly not rooting against him. And when they’re both at the top of their game, Hanyu and Chen’s current shorts are in a dead heat for me in terms of “best of the cycle.” I was just making a point on risk/reward at the Olympics, and why I saw the layout change as more risk than reward for a variety of reasons.
Well I would hope so, since you are posting in this thread.

I'm afraid that the cruelty of US journalism is something Nathan needs to learn to put into perspective as a current #1 American
male skater and "Quad King". But it's comfort to know Nathan found tons of unconditional support from the fans on social media
when he was down.

I hope Nathan will be feeling better by worlds and can skate his SP to its best! Also kind of hope he won’t wear that Vera Wang one light colored sleeve top again ...

agreed, but Nathan's curls will grow back by then I guess. that is something to celebrate:yahoo:

I was a bit concerned since Nathan's had a pretty crazy schedule this season so far. And after World's he's going straight to Japan for SOI, then returning to the US for a 22 city tour. He badly needs a vacation.
Poor Nathan, but that is how you earn the reputation, earn the money (and fans) for figure skating the sport , and all those mounts to points.

EDIT: btw, ICE shows are fun, mingle with fans are fun too, Surly Nathan will enjoy it (wink with tongue out) :hap85::dance3:

I had the same thought after seeing the big gap between two scores.

I personally love to see Jason and Nathan share a specialist coach so Nathan can refine his skating with Jason who may be without quads but a brilliant skater, plus he’s super warm and can be a good elder brother support for him.
