Nathan Chen

Maybe there are some reasons behind that he purposely doesn't do more knee bend?

Nathan had osgood Schlatter when he was younger. It caused a boney growth at the base of his knees. It may have been difficult to reach deep knee bends while he has his condition.

I really hope that's not the reason:sad4:

How fitting a day before his 19th birthday to reflect on his younger days.
Thanks @ shine for sharing thoughts on him as a boy vs the teen he’s become. What fascinated me when watching his younger self skating is like you pointed out the complexity of the blade work but also the transitions he can handle and the musicality at that age making them so worthy to savor those moments.

I didn’t quite get what you mean by he needs more power?

do you know if that is a permanent condition?

I think it’s permanent - other than surgery (which I believe is only done in only extreme cases). PT can help and I would assume Nathan is already addressing it with this.

Hmm I kind of doubt it. It's such a fundamental thing and I've never really heard of skaters not being able to achieve knee bend due to injuries. I think it's really just that he hasn't had a coach who emphasizes such things. My guess is that he may learn things from the choreographers but kind of slowly forget about the importance of them after he goes home. And since jumps have taken such precedence in the past 3 seasons, ss seems to have been set in the back burner. I was watching him during official practices at SA and it struck me how little he practiced stroking and gliding compared to other skaters and how quickly he went to jumping. Of course official practices at comps could be very different than training back home, but the difference I saw between his and other skaters' approach did bother me a bit.

this is true, also Nathan does not do complete run-thru.

According to Harvard Health article in 2012

https://www.health.harvard.edu/diseases-and-conditions/osgood-schlatter-disease-

Major symptoms from Osgood-Schlatter disease typically go away before age 18, or when a teenager's growth spurt ends and the bones mature. The condition may leave a permanent painless bump below the knee. In the years after recovery, about 60% of adults who once experienced Osgood-Schlatter disease have some pain with kneeling.

According to article from Mayo Clinic in 2017
https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/osgood-schlatter-disease/symptoms-causes/syc-20354864

Complications of Osgood-Schlatter disease are uncommon. If they occur, they might include chronic pain or localized swelling.
Even after symptoms have resolved, a bony bump might remain on the shinbone just below the kneecap. This bump can persist to some degree throughout your child's life, but it doesn't usually interfere with knee function.
In rare cases, Osgood-Shlattter disease can cause the growth plate to be pulled away from the shinbone.

^^ I saw that bump on Nathan's knee,

recently there is a cosplay girl went to M&G and ask Nathan to kneel down and posing with her, we can check Nathan's kneel extent thru that photo.

Don't think it would be that visible :con3:

the bump is very prominent, I saw that in NBC national backstage cam
just checked that photo with that cosplay girl, it is hard to tell, Nathan does not have more than needed knee bend in that photo. I think if I were in that position, I will kneel down more then Nathan, that cosplay girl bended more.

also, when Nathan are younger, his sit spin, he can bend more
nowadays, he seems cannot bend as deep as his baby days

I will be very sad if he has to deal with any sort of pain or discomfort. But does he need that much knee bend to achieve deeper edge? If he can land quads and do sit spin, he should be able to bend his knee enough if necessary.

Nathan looks so good and he’s wearing short sleeves for the m&g

He did cut his hair some - but still has some fluffy

I think Nathan has quite flexible ankles
