Nathan Chen

I think Nathan has pretty precise edges, blade placement, and weight distribution while skating and his stroking mechanism is quite good. Even Kurt mentioned he likes the way Nathan "treats the ice".

But comparing him to someone like Patrick, Shoma or even Yuzuru you can clearly see he's not generating as much power and speed with each stroke and his edges are shallower (not as much lean). Much of this is related to amount of knee bend one has while stroking (again, both Patrick and Shoma are known for this). Having deeper knees allows you to generate more power with each stroke and you are faster and your skating looks bigger overall.

Yes I can see Patrick and Shoma skating do appear bigger, thanks for explaining. I also agree the sit spin requires more knee bending and maybe like what @frida said it’s a habit + mental thing. Let’s hope he works on the SS in the offseason.

wow - Nathan’s Japanese fans are amazing! There’s even a fan forum!

who wants to organize the US version? :)

What goes into creating one? I’m always clueless on this stuff but it’d be cool if he had one in the US. I would join the JP one but I can’t understand anything lol

Happy Birthday Nathan!

I noticed in both his SOI programs he was extremely fast. But I am sure you don’t mean be faster but longer glides.

Nathan liked and said Thank you very much!! to Yuki's birthday greeting insta post--a very still but real Nathan-- this morning.

the Kween posted her photoe with Nathan and Karen, and both of them liked it.

was browsing twitter, just realized Yuna's birthday is on 09/05/1990 and Nathan's birthday is on 05/05/1999
"九五之尊"

九五至尊 in English means "9 and 5 reign supreme". According to ancient Chinese beliefs, the number 9 ranks as the highest number, and the number 5 is a "middle" , or "central" number. Thus 9 and 5 together came to be regarded as a supreme combination which symbolized the emperor.

According to Google
九五至尊 It was the emperor

Happy 19th Birthday to Nathan:luv17::love:

Making sure he'll receive a lot more of these in the future... very clever of him! :laugh::biggrin:

Really? Because supposedly he's super slow compared to other skaters, especially when people see him live. But then again, that was comparing him to the other top men, which aren't present at SOI, so...

I think his "choppy" stroking and gliding is simply his "natural" way of moving across the ice, I mean, there's bound to be different skating styles and he happens to fall on one extreme end of the spectrum (and I imagine that people from the opposite side otoh would look too sluggish and steady, and their movements might not be explosive enough).
So I'd say this is just his innate body language and for some reason this was never addressed and developed properly?

And I think it might have been even fostered further by his very busy novice and junior programs (both in his transitions and step sequences), although maybe they chose those types of programs because they suited him and they tried to use his quickness as a strength, who knows.

^ He’s only been slower in competitions where he’s trying 5-6 quads, otherwise his speed has never been a problem as far as I know.

@1111bm disagree
but do not wanna argue, that is why I wanna Nathan to skate to a super flowy, lyrical EX to showcase he has the ability to execute smooth SS skating. Let his own skating to do the explanation.

Also, all the issue that @Shine mentioned is true about Nathan's SS. He needs to improve on those area.

I thought he was slower when there were more quads or in bigger competitions, but still very fast in general... just my impression. I can't imagine a skater at his level to be slow.

Nathan’s Japanese fans seem so dedicated, their birthday gifts/video etc seem like they’ve taken a lot of time and effort. The rest of us fans gotta step it up lol (jk haha)

Shoutout to his Korean fanbase too because they’re super quick with getting Nathan related video/info up.
