Nathan Chen

Lol, the judges obviously didn't know what to do with the ChSq.
Was the negative GOE due to it being late and frankly incomplete, or do you think they can't handle anything different from those overused and well-trodden Ina bauers/lunges/knee slides/spread eagles/you-name-it?

One detail I dislike in his FS is the upright variation in the last spin... I hate when it's done on a forward spin, looks really unaesthetic to me, and it looks gorgeous when Nathan does it on a backspin. :(
And I'm usually a big fan of his spins, even though in general spins mostly bore me to death, so that's saying something.

He could save a ton of money on hairgel, if he'd just cut the hair already... I'm not advocating a short 'Vera' cut, just give it some shape, because those curls look sad.

ETA:
I don't think he's gained weight, that top is just very loose around the stomach area (looks very unflattering during camel spins, unfortunately) and in addition, the fabric is ruffled under the armpits.
Also, that design... let's just say it reminds of the time me and my mom went through a silk painting phase back when I was a child...

I don’t know if he has gained weight - but this new shirt is less flattering than the blue one. He doesn’t look like he’s as fit now - though kinda hard to tell with the looser clothing.

Agree he needs a haircut - what he has now looks too messy - unless he ties it back.

I think Nathan has had (some small) zits for awhile now (at least since summer) - skin (and hair!) looked really good at worlds and SOI though.

Wondering if something is up with his 4lz and 4F - I don’t think we’ve seen either jump - practice clip or otherwise - since worlds ?

This was a good learning experience at least - better here than at SA! Would be amazing if he can recover as well as Alina did :)

I have been a fan of Nathan since I first was amazed by his technical prowess at the 2016 US Championships. I also have been a silent fan of this thread for about the last 8 or 9 months. What is unique about this fan fest is that the fans provide constructive criticism when things don't go well for Nathan. I like that...as no one (even Nathan) is perfect. One of the things I admire most about Nathan is that he always tries to push the envelope. When that happens, there are both epic fails and historic performances. In this case, we have to remember, he's in a brand new situation trying to balance school and skating, it's his first competitive performance of the season, and he probably flew straight from school to Japan. I agree that his conditioning is not where it should have been, but it appears that his jumps are almost there - especially considering that he's trying to add the quad loop back in. Also, I think even Nathan has said, when you start falling, it zaps all energy like nothing else (impacting spins and other elements of the program). We know Nathan is a smart guy - and he'll do his best to overcome the issues with this program. BTW, last year's Japan Open wasn't that great either. Let's see what he does at Skate America.

I think they're both fine, but it seems his goals for JO were twofold: 1)to bring back the 4Lo, and 2)to backload 3 quads. Keeping the 4Lz and 4F would have made those goals that much harder. Of course, Nathan being himself, he couldn't help yoloing the 4Lz after missing the 4Lo.

I'm guessing the 4Lo will go back into cold storage, to be brought out yet again at next year's JO. LOL

i really hope Nathan doesn’t start a trend where the best program artistically he performs is always the debut......
I thought he said multiple times that the focus this year was skating skills and artistry? But seems like the quads are still dominating and his performance just goes as always when his quads are not working.

Wow, that chinese judge gave Nathan some crazy high GOEs, I wonder what that is all about, especially since the US judge gave him the lowest ones out of all the judges.

I'm worried that they called his 4Lz as an UR, because it wasn't! Only the 4T was...
Because so far I've seen some blatantly UR or even forwards landed jumps this season, from other top or 'aiming-for-the-top' men (who I can't name :rolleye:) that didn't get called... :disapp:
I know it's just one jump in Nathan's first competition this season, and it's just this one technical panel, but I still find this rather troubling... hopefully they won't start penalising Nathan more harshly than everyone else (or even when it's actually uncalled for).

Did you expect anything else from him? Because I didn't... wish I had been wrong, though. :(

Last season his artistically the best performance is not JO, I think RC...
I think he knows all of the concerns we have. It is hard to stay focus on artistry with 6 quads...🙄
But he told a lot before this season, he wants to focus more on artistry and choreography. So let’s wait for SA and Idf , How he can do all of the things. I know this boy keep his word.

I think some found his US Classic performance of MLD to be the most artistic ...

SA should be better for sure!

I was referring to the US Intln Classic.

I’m really concerned about him being burned out. I also noticed the zits and I can imagine how stressful it must be to be maintaininh a full course load and elite training (some can’t even handle just one!). I also said before I was afraid he could be underestimating how demanding college is and add to that he’s living by himself for the first time AND training by himself. I know he’s quite capable, but he’s got to be pushing himself pretty hard.

Nathan’s main consern should me his school. Skating it’s there. In his body memory. This is one competition of the many. But that’s my opinion. I am always advocate for school.

Awww, I just watch his Japan Open performance, and I like his hair style for this program, and super happy to see the purple shirt ;D
However, I feel like there should be more being done to the custome and the program. If there isn’t the predator/sniper in the program, I feel like there may be the pray/their fear, or the terrain shown in his program, if he still intends to make a reference to the movie. The program still seems to be rather empty to me.
As for the custome, I simply hope that it can be more eye catching. This purple one seems to work with the program, but is missing the wow factor in design.
And Nathan got me to watch Abbott’s Land of All, it was quite an interesting piece. Thank you Nathan ;)
