Nathan Chen

I don't think he would be attempting such a layout if he weren't feeling confident.

That's what I was wondering about... he wouldn't have brought back the 4Lo this early (which was never his most reliable quad) and backloaded most of the quads if practices had not gone well for the past weeks, right?

Do you think he might have been struggling with nerves again? Even though this was just an entertainment event, it was his first showing since starting college and having won worlds, so... and it did look like he panicked quite a bit after the 4Lo went wrong, whereas in the past he was pretty good at keeping things together, even when the first jump didn't work out.

Or maybe he underestimated the fatigue from the jetlag combined with generally not being well rested because of the double load of college and training...?

I don't expect him to do so well at SA either, the home crowd might fire him up a bit, but even if he does a little better than at JO, since this was the worst skate he's ever had (even when considering that this is just the beginning of the season and his mindset might be different in a 'fun' event compared to a more important comp), 'a little better' would still be pretty bad. :(

I suspect he may have underestimated the extra physical demands due to the shortening of the FS. Almost all the other guys are struggling as well. In fact, out of all the programs so far this season I don't remember any man landing more than 2 clean quads in a FS. This weekend Kolyada won Finlandia with just one 4T and one 3A. And Nathan was hoping to backload three of his quads...

Shoma landed 4 quads at Lombardia but with a UR call on his 4F and missed the combo on his 2nd 4T. Shoma fell on his 3A, not quad.
Dmitri Aliev landed 3 quads, also at Lombardia.

Yes, Aliev landed 3 clean quads, but not Shoma. The 4F was UR and the 4T had a hand down. The 4S also had a step out.

It seems unlikely that Nathan would be going for the 4lo and backloaded quads if practices had not been going well ? ... and he did land a good 4lo beforehand.

He looked so tired at JO - and with the zits, it doesn't look like he's getting enough sleep/rest. I think tiredness was a very significant factor here.

Agree with the TSL guys that his hair is distracting - and also it looks greasy from all that gel :p

Many don't want any more Vera costumes for Nathan - but what he is wearing now - not very well-fitting black pants and a shirt that is making some wonder if he's gained weight ... his 'perfect skating body' (per Doug Haw) deserves better than this!

Yes. I think the mood of new costume fit for the music, but not for him(fit is terrible. I want to know who design it☹️)
And about the hair style, i guess he will get new hair cut before SA.

The costume has almost the same design as the blue one but in a different fabric so he probably got it from the same place.

Great performance quality and energy at the show! And nice 4T!

A bit weird to see him skating Nemesis in that outfit though lol

Thanks Hollymolly for all the links. Caravan, tho Cherokee changed a little, never fails to cheer me up, and it is so nice to see Nemesis again, and most importantly to see a happy smiling Nathan.

More pictures from Carnival on Ice.

Nathan's hair at COI!
Totally reminds me of this: https://s3.amazonaws.com/pq-imgs/images/bios/Ludwig-van-Beethov-9592.jpg
I mean, I love tousled hair, I really do, but since it's an outgrown haircut, the resulting shape is really... unflattering. :palmf::slink:
Ah well, at least there's that precious smile again.

Yeah, but there's struggling and then there's the mess that Nathan's program at JO was... I don't think any of the other men have managed to...

- fall three (!) times

- double a quad

- get a REP due to a fall

- miss two combos due to falls/unstable landing

- have sloppy/slow spins

- miss half of their ChSq because the last 1-2 jumps were delayed (I think?)
(not sure what happened here, Nathan jumped his 4S right when the ChSq should have started... I got the impression that he was stalling his last two jumping passes? I realise with the time cut the men have less time to set up their quads and that's messing with their old rhythm, but it's not like Nathan didn't practice his program with the new time limit, so I guess this happened out of fear?)

- get visibly so stressed out and tense at the upcoming jumping passes, that they only did a half-hearted attempt at their choreo in the second half of the program
(just look how Nathan stops committing to the body/arm movements towards the end of his StSq, or after the fall on his second 4T)

...all in one program.

LOL Have you actually watched the other events? It's been a comedy of errors.

In any case, JO is not a real competition and Nathan would not have attempted such a silly layout had it really counted. Nor would he have flown halfway around the world with only one day to adjust to the time difference.

I think Nathan was really tired/jet lagged. I find it hard to believe he has lost that much ...

Nathan’s FS was not the worst among men’s programs so far this season :p.

He will be better at SA! And we will get to see Caravan in competition.

1111bm - LOL at that hair. His hair is now triangular in shape - which is just not flattering. His jawline deserves better than this!
