Nathan Chen

Watched the facebook video again. Did Nathan said he might have got it by accident when answering Michael Weiss’ question on his 800 SAT math? Cool kid.

I couldn't make out what he said, only the part where he said that it MAY have happened.

Nathan's JP Twitter fanclub has designed a banner which can be printed out on paper for those attending the GPF. It'll be fun to see how many there are in the stands.

In addition to Nathan's Q&A, most of the other top skaters have ones, too. When asked who their biggest rivals were both Vincent and Adam named Nathan.

Vincent:
My biggest rival is Nathan Chen, another young Asian, about one and a half years older than me. Our relationship is very friendly and we both respect each other's abilities very much. Since I was little, I always looked at his skating as exemplary, and over the years I am slowly closing the gap. I couldn't believe my eyes when I first saw both our names on the competitors' list at the same competition. Now, it's a friendly rivalry that I look forward to continuing through the next few years.

Adam:
Nathan Chen is my biggest rival. He won the national title while I had to sit out in 2017. I have been training with Nathan for the past five years. I feel like he's a little brother. I'm really proud of what he's been able to achieve and in practice, he pushes me to be unafraid and better than I was the day before.

I think many Nathan fans were devastated and really sad when he bombed his FS in front a large home crowd.... Me included.... I think many were sooo sad that they could not afford to watch the FS for the second time...
I wish Nathan fans to rewatch this FS without commentary since it is really a beautiful program and Nathan apparently put a lot of effect/preparation to improve his artistry especially for his first time home ice SA competition.
You can see it, obviously it is mistake ridden, and that took away some of his performance. But you can still detect those little nuances he tried to put in as much as possible. Such as his facial expression, where should eyes looked at. And all kinds of flourished during his spin etc. (well, perhaps only a hardcore fan can detect these nuances  )
And this official FS competition is the only version he performances his new stsq. I think lori added more upper-body movement (to maximize gravity center change) and added more turns/steps as well. (Hope Nathan Boi can perform it to perfection next time)
One thing need to noticed in Nathan's Fs is a dance move motif, that is repeated appears , especially added in this new stsq. I think that is perhaps not coincidence but on purpose.
this motif is a ballet arm 4th position (and its variation/flourish)
As you can see demonstrated here in stsq https://youtu.be/e48hSYQ2PU4?t=126 https://youtu.be/e48hSYQ2PU4?t=139 like the arm position of Cunxin Li (mao's last dancer author) here http://cdn.simplesite.com/i/d9/54/282319408457995481/i282319414582531018._szw270h3500_.jpg
if you pay attention this motif is repeatedly appears throughout his FS program. I think it is a nice nod to the ballet root of either this story/program/performance and Nathan's personal experience. Nathan program also created asymmetric shapes.

Nathan may have crumbled a bit under his own expectation to perform well in front of home crowd, and the whole blade situation may have added more onto that, such as self-doubt etc.
As the season goes on, the pressure will ONLY pile on Nathan not otherwise. I hope Young Nathan can handle it properly, Don't know what suggestion could help him actually, maybe perhaps, just relax, breathe, get down down into your knees and flow with the music.
Keep up with flexibility training as well. Cute Nathan Boi:biggrin:

EDIT:
more suggestion I could think of, prepare more boot+blades set and break in and get used to them regularly. so that if any mishap happened, we could always have a second pair of boot+blade set that is properly broken in and get used.
Also, like I alway suggested, stabilize a KILLER jump lay-out if it is possible/manageable. this may help with program consistency and performance (some other fans also suggested, even if he cannot perform full quads run-through in practice, may consider swap some quad for the same kinda of triple just to improve program/choreo consistency). As a fan, my selfish hope is a lay-out with loop jump opening like the original choreoed (and 3A opening for SP).. while I know he probably will NOT do that:biggrin:

Nathan Boi was soooo nervous and could not sleep at all at last 2017 worlds where he bombed too...
Don't be nervous cute Nathan Boi, but it is easier said than done....

Nathan recently started to pick up more and more fans in China.
Nathan's Chinese nickname among Chinese fans is "Three Three", "三三"
Nathan's Chinese name is 陈巍 Chen Wei "Wei" means towering, lofty, mighty, majestic.
Chinese main news media and sports media refer Nathan as 陈巍 instead of Nathan Chen, which is really lovely.
And Nathan is adored inside China and Chinese fans sincerely wish Nathan can visit China again, maybe compete in COC in the future or next OG in 2022.

And lots of cute Chinese girls dream to be Nathan's girlfriend :cool::biggrin:

Nope, it is a long story, it is derived from North American figure skaters of Chinese ancestry that has family name of Chen 陈
Chinese figure skating fans and community naturally feel a sense of affiliation to these skaters. They are the so-called adopted sons of daughters of Chinese skating fans, the 陈 fam
There are 4 of them so far from the oldest to youngest
Tiffany Chin 陈婷婷
Patrick Chan 陈伟群
Nathan Chen 陈巍
Karen Chen 陈凯雯

Nathan is the third son (or third brother) thus Chinese fans nicknamed him 三三 (three three) there are also some variations such as 三儿(the third son),三弟 (the third younger brother),小三 (little three) since Nathan is really young.
三三 is the most popular one since it sounds really cute . Chinese usually use duplication in nicknames e.g. 群群(Patrick),天天(Boyang),君君(zijun),芳芳(Vince) and of course 三三(Nathan)

EDIT: In term of syllable of Nathan there are also nicknames like "内森" that is the syllable of Nathan. So a variation of "内森" is “奶森” which just refer to infant or baby Nathan.

Nathan should practice his Chinese, maybe take a few college courses. I'm sure it will come in handy one day.

Videos from the Gala have been uploaded here.

Here's a cute story about the shirt he wore at the beginning; it was given to him as a present by that person. Immediately after receiving it he put it on for the gala.

Nathan also explains why he wears gloves with holes in them. (Answer: No particular reason. They are just worn out.)

In my country the otters get to measure 2 meters and they like to eat piranhas :eeking:, I think they aren't the type of otter that Nathan would like to see. he he he :noshake:

I just read on twitter that the senior men's FS in US Nationals will be on January 6, 2018, it is unlikely that Nathan defends his title of 4 CC (I was very excited but in the Olympics are individual and team competition) I'm still waiting for him to choose new costumes but I'll end up making a Prince Igor costume for my pet even though the Michael Jackson costume was also very cute :dance3:
