Nathan Chen

I have been wondering who choreographed the "Parachute" EX. There was a rumor that it was by Benoit Richaud, but I could not find any official info.

I'm not aware of any legit press articles mentioning it but Nathan answered the question to his JP Twitter Fanclub

Benoit Richaud is also listed as choreographer on Nathan's wikipedia page. (Parachute is wrongly listed as a 2016-17 season EX)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathan_Chen
In addition Richaud confirmed it in an old Instagram story, but of course that's no longer available.

Nathan news:

Stephanee Grosscup did an interview a few days ago and spoke at length about being Nathan's first coach. On her FB page she posted several very cute photos of him from that time.

Bridgestone just signed an agreement with US Figure Skating and will have naming rights for this year's Skate America. Expect to see a Nathan/Bridgestone media blitz at both Skate America and Nationals.

Thank you for finding out the information. Nathan performed "Parachute" during SOI this April/May, so it can be considered as a 2016-17 EX.

JO competitors are supposed to arrive on Thursday so they should be departing for Japan soon.

In the buildup Nathan's JP Twitter fanclub asked him what sorts of presents he would be like besides clothing. His answer? Letters. Expect him to be bringing home loads of fan letters in addition to the usual Nike shirts.

I'm guessing a Japanese broadcaster purchased the rights to Nathan's FS because clips from it have been popping up in TV ads like the one above and on TV shows like this one:
https://twitter.com/cure_1225/status/914462611990704128

Which would explain why it was pulled so quickly off Youtube and Dailymotion when they were first uploaded.

In my stupidity, I thought the soundtrack right holders made the objection. This makes a lot more sense. I'm flabbergasted though. Marin, I completely understood because she's so popular right now. I didn't think anyone would really want a fuzzy poor quality video broadcast of Nathan's programs yet. I was fully prepared to download them before they were snatched down after rostelecom, though.

It makes me wonder if they have a hq version. Hmmm...

Nathan is majorly hyped by the Japanese media. Basically, they make it sound like OGM is a battle of Yuzuru vs Shoma vs Nathan. And he's incredibly popular with the fans, too. Scroll through the videos on the Figure Skating TV Youtube channel to see how often he's featured there.

Filmmaker James Aitken has put together a video comprised of clips from his work with USFS. There is some Nathan footage that we have not seen before.

I know Nathan is really popular in Japan. But I can't understand why they snatched his videos of YT and left Hanyu and Shoma's. It's irritating. Even more so if they have a HD version and won't share.

Both Nathan's U.S. Classic programs are on youtube. I'm not sure what videos were taken down, but the two I watched before are still up. (Though the version on ice network has the best clarity).

Many of Hanyu's fans also complain that his videos on youtube have been taken down by Japanese tivi stations too.

BTW, I am not sure about "very popular" because even Uno is not that much popular in Japan. GP in French still has 80% left with both Uno and Fernandez there (Japan's son in law). The "popular standard" is only applied among skating fans. And skating fans in japan in someway are viewed like a cult, like those otaku and geeks.

The truth is, Medvedeva is hardly relevant in Japan even though she is 2 time WC. I am not sure Nathan is that "very popular". The Japanese skating community favors him a bit but it is not that huge.

His free skates had to be uploaded on videos that sandwich the FD with his warm up and the victory ceremony. The ones with just FS were taken down. I have scroll pass the warm up just to see his FS. Very annoying. Not as annoying as watching Marin's FS deliberate bad audio. :rolleye:

With his nationals, no problem. Why would icenetwork sell the exclusive rights to Nathan's FS anyway? I guess they don't care other people would want to see him off ice network. Sigh...

But watching it again makes me appreciate the nuances and the symbolism I didn't pick up before. It's really lovely. Can't wait to see it with better video quality.

I know it's only in the skating community. To clarify, I mean he's a very popular in the figure skating community in Japan. But Yuzuru's SP and FS are still up on YT. Nathan's FS is hidden in a video with his warm up and victory ceremony. I wish someone would try again. They can't block it forever.

I don't really understand the point of buying this exclusive right to this one video of one skater. Before I had thought it was because there was a copyright violation with the music and that was why the video was taken down. But now I'm just confused. Is the TV station planning on showing it at some point or something? Otherwise what's the point of preventing people from watching it on YT? It jut doesn't make sense to me.

I'm more disappointed in USFS for selling exclusive rights to their top men's skater to another country rather than allow it to be promoted in the US to build excitement. People use social media to share videos and hype their favs. This takes away some of their own free advertising. It's an Olympic year, and this is the first and only time a Nathan shown his FS. It's really disappointing and baffling. :scratch2:

Hanyu’s recorded videos at SCAI belong to Skate Canada’s stream, that’s why they’re on YouTube and not banned yet. His performances at NHK and GPF and National will be banned as they will be recorded by Japanese tivi.

About Chen’s video might have to do with the music license. Also, Japanese tivi recorded his videos along with Marin Honda. Their videos are considered properties of that Japanese station.

If I remember correctly, the music Chen uses are quite modern from a movie which is banned in China. So it might be another issue with license in the future.

Also, Japanese tivi has blocked many of Hanyu’s videos on YouTube. Half of his videos last season on YouTube are gone. Sometimes YouTube works weird. They haven’t blocked you doesn’t mean they won’t. Their algorithm hasn’t touched you yet.

I'm more bemused by the whole thing than annoyed. I really want to see Nathan's reception in Japan this weekend. Speaking of which...

His first Japan sighting:

Wonder if he has a coach with him. I'd have thought Raf would be in Finland with Adam and Brezina, but from Adam's Instagram story it looks like he brought Derrick Delmore with him.
