Nathan Chen

It don’t think it has any relationship to the Japanese tivi station. It might have to do with the music license. If I remember correctly, the music he uses are quite modern from a movie which is banned in China.
Also, Japanese tivi has blocked many of Hanyu’s videos on YouTube. Half of his videos last season on YouTube are gone. Sometimes YouTube works weird. They haven’t blocked you doesn’t mean they won’t. Their algorithm hasn’t touched you yet.

As far as I know, this movie is not banned in China, it is also a collaboration of Chinese and Western movie production.
Also, what criticized in this movie is culture revolution, the Chinese government itself also criticized the fault of culture revolution ever since the economic reform lead by Xiaoping Deng. In the end of the movie, the dancer's parents were invited to Houston to unite with their son because of the open and more free political environment after Mao's death and the start of open China.

The music copyright could be a reason why Nathan's video is taken from internet. but that should apply only to FS not SP. But indeed, it is very diffcult to find the FS music track on internet, but it has nothing to do with its political orientation OR whether it has been banned in China or not, just purely a music copyright thing.

Oh why on FSuniverse they said the music of the movie was banned in China?
But overall yes, music copyright and license make it so difficult. I don’t get why figure skating performance don’t get a pass. Most of the musics are chopped up anyway.

I never saw any info about that movie been banned in China on Chinese social media, also, the male dancer actor who featured in the movie is from Beijing Dance academy, and has a active public social media account on Chinese social media.

But there is some gossip/rumor about Nathan's FS music choice political correctness in China when his FS music choice came out. Even to the ridiculous extend that Nathan's FS performance may be banned in China due to its FS music choice. Most of these nonsense are baseless and has no idea about the movie or never watched movie.
Just used as an opportunity to bring Nathan down. You know, those things trolls do.

I have seen at least 2 people saying that his music choices might be disliked in China.

Anyway his music are all new and they have copyright issue. It’s not like something new YouTube has just done. Daily Motion might keep the videos though.

The video was removed from Dailymotion, too. And when you went to the link it said that it was removed due to a copyright claim from Dentsu, Inc.

Trust me, I has seen more "people saying Nathan's music choices might be disliked in China" on Chinese social media platform. Definitely more than 2. LOL

But, that does not mean a thing.

Nathan's fans still love Nathan dearly in China, actually love him even more due to his creative and adventurous music choices this season.
As for figure skating community as whole in China, its' opinion of Nathan never changed a bit (judged by major/official media figure skating outlet and fan opinions that holds some weight). actually, most people loved/related his FS even more than his SP.That is pretty normal for Chinese figure skating fans when they listen to some tunes oriential/chinese, they feel the familiarity.

I personally would not worry about Nathan's FS reception in China.

But just so you know, Some haters does used it as the opportunity to bash Nathan.

I watched the movie, there is nothing wrong about it at all.
Instead, culture revolution is all sorts of wrongdoing against humanity not only to China but to the collective human race (What lost in terms of art, intelligence, culture, heritage etc. is a lost to the whole human being). And Chinese government now knew, admitted and has faced it. I thought this (current Chinese government's condemnation towards culture revolution) is also well-known in western world or globally.

The most popular translation of this movie's title in China is just
The last dancer.

a little more info
the autobiography that Nathan's FS movie based on has been imported into China and published in the Chinese market.
Nathan's FS received mostly positive reception(only negativity is haters' political correctness argument), nearly all Chinese fans think it is better and great. Many detected Nathan's dance capability and considered Nathan as a true dancer in Figure skating thru this program. This particular program endears Nathan to them. Some even become a new fan.

Dentsu is notorious for being a not so clean agency. I heard they’re a PR agency. I didn’t know they also have some copyright.
Btw I will send you a PM about this matter.

Any idea why the music copyright issue only happened with the FS but not the SP?

I also just find this whole criticism regarding Nathan's FS music choice ridiculous and absurd. First, having not grown up in China, I doubt either Nathan or Lori is particularly mindful of the political sensitivity this FS would stir up or feel the need to be extra cautious about displeasing the Chinese government. They probably just watched the movie and thought the story and the score were beautiful (and relatable in Nathan's case, coming from a Chinese immigrant family) and decided it was well suited for an Olympic FS. Second, like you said, the Chinese government has openly admitted/criticized the faults of its own Cultural Revolution in the post-Mao era, so I don't know why some Chinese fans would feel skating to this soundtrack is a stab against China/Chinese/Chinese government or whatnot, or that Nathan is being "anti-Chinese" by picking this music. After all, Mao and his Culture Revolution did not and do not monopolize what it means to be Chinese and disagreeing with it definitely doesn't make anyone un-Chinese or unpatriotic. It makes me think those who are making something out of nothing are either political zealots (which makes you wonder why they would be watching figure skating in the first place) or very ardent fans of another skater trying hard to find any excuse to undermine their rivals.

maybe SP does not have copyright issue (Nathan has communicated with SP singer on twitter), but it seems it is related to a Japanese marketing company's as discussed above, then it is not related to music copyright at all.

not real political zealots at all (figure skating is niche sport in China), but maybe some "political zealots" in figure skating, which is indeed a very "political" sport:biggrin:.

Yeah, sounds like typical fs fans--making up bogus reasons to hate on the skaters who are a threat to their favorites.

Nathan and Karen wish Regionals competitors good luck

I had to do some research to see when was the last time Nathan competed in Regionals, and it was 8 years ago back when he competed in Central Pacific Regionals with his Peter and the Wolf program. He skated two clean programs and won the Novice division by 36 points.

As I said before, Nathan's free skate from the U.S. Classic is still on youtube.

It is. But it is sandwiched between his warm up and a long medal ceremony to fool YT copyright removal software. Any videos of just his FS have been taken off both YouTube and DM. I don't like the clumsy fast forwarding method of YouTube at all, where as I can just pull up a video of Yuzuru's WR SP easily.

Who is Nathan Chen?

“I feel like he’s a little brother. I’m really proud of what he’s been able to achieve and in practice he pushes me to be unafraid and be better than I was the day before.”

I didn't think Nathan did too badly at JO (I expected worse tbh) - but you could tell he was disappointed with himself (with that f-bomb that he let fly at the end... I have to admit, I laughed at that.) To me, he just looked tired - like he didn't get enough power going into some of the jumps. It was nice to see that program in high quality though, and to see him be 2/2 for quad loops! Also - I can't get over how much better his axel looks.

So after watching JO I thought Nathan looked a little tired. Probably a bit jet lagged; he wasn't getting good height on his jumps and underrotated the 4T and 4F. But on the other hand the rest of the program was a lot more polished compared to US Classic. And the 3A is becoming very solid!

Reports from Carnival on Ice say he did a show version of Nemesis with 3Lz, 3T, and 3F.
