Nathan Chen

My boyfriend thinks Nathan is hot... I totally get him.

He's been hot for years, but nobody wanted to say it until he turned 18.

Thank you for providing so much material from Nathan, I am very happy and excited :yahoo:

Olimpic Channel has uploaded a video inviting: "Meet the most interesting artistic skaters, including Evgenia Medvedeva, Yuzuru Hanyu, Nathan Chen (3:02), Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPRFCxycHKU

PS: My 4-year-old niece loves Nathan's rock show (obviously me too)

^Thanks for the upload! Now we won't have to listen to Scott and Co. with their constant yammering!

The Canon interview doesn't have much that's new but I did find this passage about Nathan's 3A to be interesting:
Q: You've become a great quad jumper but still struggle with the triple axel.

A: That's true. I've never been great with edge jumps and have been more consistent with the toe jumps: toe loop, flip, and lutz. I was originally poor with the double axel so when I moved up to triples I changed my jumping technique. Right now I'm kind of using a new jumping technique, i.e., using a proper outer edge when leaping into it, and I'm having trouble learning it. It's a big change so I've struggled with it for the past two years but I've slowly gotten better. At least I feel it's improved at the GPF compared to Skate America.

The Canon interview doesn't have much that's new but I did find this passage about Nathan's 3A to be interesting:

I feel a little gutted about Nathan's 3A, he learned it on a clean curvy entry edge (which is the old-schooled ideal technique that Yuzuru, Han Yan and Vincent etc. are using). when he was little he can do beautiful 2A (using clean curvy entry) with tons of difficult entry like spread eagle, counter etc.

He obviously had some trouble when transitioning from 2A to 3A, but I have hoped he could sticked to his old technique (be patient with it, figure out the kinks) and find his grasp of it and master it...Maybe, he will have a very confident, flying 3A now.

But Nathan and Team obviously understand his unique body the best thus chose the most suitable technique for him. I really hope that 3A will NOT become his achilles heel. I think Nathan BOI is a genius in terms of Kinesthetic, He has exhibited on many occasions to fine tune his technique on the fly for unimaginable situations. He WILL get it.

I DO believe Nathan's 3A (using his current new technique) is getting better and more consistent. Hope it WILL show in future games. Also, hope that 3A will NOT become Nathan BOI's mental block.

As an selfish fan (not a coach:biggrin:) I wish Nathan maybe can re-learn the curvy clean edge entry after OG when pressure is less and he gets time (just have fun with it , why not). Because, all Nathan BOI's other jumping technique is so old-schooled and textbook. For such a genius and competitor like Nathan BOI, it must felt really great to finally conquer that 3A. Not only conquer it and execute it beautifully like his quad lutz and quad flip.

A little ideal(crazy perhaps:biggrin:), maybe Nathan BOI can try change-of-edge entry into his 3A (he does that slight change-of-edge into 3jump in his warm-up), it could serve as a difficult entry (but I have never seen anyone do a difficult 3A entry like that), OR do the change-of-edge on the right leg and then step into 3A like Han's 3A here https://youtu.be/KAGuiBtymc4?t=160 I know Nathan BOI has been playing around many different 3A entries this season already...

Okay, fans worry tooo much (please ignore me). Just hope Nathan BOI's 3A could be tame in the future games.

Thanks a lot Sheetz, There is so little material about Nathan in Spanish that I practically got used to reading about him in English (y español es mi idioma nativo :rolleye:)

We almost reached 100 000 followers on instagram, just over a year ago we were barely 10,000 and exaggerating, Nathan will conquer the world with his spectacular skating :yahoo:

Nathan's BIGGEST fan in China just made a MV for him

The lyrics

怕你飞远去( afraid you will fly away)
怕你离我而去(afraid you will leave me)
更怕你永远停留在这里(but more afraid you will stay here forever)
看你飞远去(seeing you flying away)
看你离我而去(seeing you leaving me)
原来你生来就属于天际( I learnt that you were born to be greatness)

exactly describes her most sincere and deepest LOVE to Nathan BOI.

@jackattack

This perhaps is the first ever fan made (from China with LOVE) MV for Nathan BOI.

Like I said before, Nathan BOI does not have as big a fanbase in China as in US or Japan. but it is surely growing quietly (with LOVE).

second version of this Fan made MV (with LOVE) for Nathan BOI. added "representing Salt Lake Figure Skating Nathan Chen" in the beginning, and Nathan BOI's lovely interaction with fans speaking Chinese in the end, Also english subtitle of the Song.

From the fan:
"The name of the song is Big Fish, and the fish refers to a Chinese mythical fish named 鲲(Kun). 鲲(Kun) is giant and later turns into a big bird which we call 鹏(Peng). So we usually call this animal 鲲鹏(Kun Peng). In Chinese culture, 鲲鹏 refers to a person with big dreams and ambition. And the phrase 鲲鹏展翅(Kun Peng spreads its wings) means a person realizes his/her big dreams. So I chose this song not only bc its lyrics touched me, but also bc I hope Nathan can be a 鲲鹏, and he can 鲲鹏展翅, realising all of his dreams."

As a Chinese myself, I truly understand and am touched by this MV and the Fan's LOVE to Nathan BOI.

Ok, so apparently he's addicted to quads... sounds like he needs to slowly wean himself off doing them
I mean, it seems triples aren't enough to give him that rush (not anymore? they must have in the beginning...?), soon quads won't cut it anymore either... :)

I always wonder how he feels about longterm damage to his body from all that jumping and at such a young age as well (never mind acute injuries...).
I wish this was addressed more in interviews with Nathan and other young skaters, because I'm really curious about this and also, raising more awareness of this would be a good thing, too. :ohwell:
Living the rest of your (still young) life possibly in chronic pain after having led such an active, athletic lifestyle as an adolescent/young adult... that's really a gloomy prospect :(.

that is a great point, Nathan BOI could be a role model in that regard.
And he is applying for pre-med, must have accumulated such huge interest in Medicine due to his own experience.

I fell in love with that song :luv17:

I was watching the Europeans this weekend, I was struck by several commentators mentioning Nathan and his results in the US nationals (well, to start with they are European tournaments, Nathan does not participate there) I felt very happy, the world observes Nathan :hap85: and well, the minimalist trend of Nathan is expanding (see EURO EX of Medvedeva and Breziña) I think Nathan also made the red suit fashionable (this year there are more competitors wearing red suits, in the US nationals the final group was in red - even Brown changed the blue to red) :drama:

Nathan said somewhere that he treasures an autograph by Tim Goebel (the first US quad king) like Nathan, Tim started having problems with the triple axel (some quad effect?) And I remember that Yagudin had hip surgery, Evgeni had many surgeries in the spine, Lambiel injured his knee and was not able to jump triple axel (quad effect?), Pchiddy mentioned that "landing a quad is painful and can permanently injure the body", landing quad implies a high physical and mental cost :scard8: , if in one or two years Nathan decides to retire I will understand, but I will treasure all him presentations

Which commentators mentioned Nathan? I haven’t had a chance to watch much coverage of Euros yet :)
