Nathan Chen

Just arrived from work and found out that he's 4th, which isn't bad really after learning what happen to Kolyada. :palmf:

I'm happy though that he got all L4 with his spins and step sequence, and he has a bunch of 9s too in his components despite of the fall and the pop. :)

And I agree with some of you. I hope he won't let this bad skate affect him and concentrate for the individual event. :hap10:

PS. After seeing how the media dealt about this, I've decided to check only the ISU website and this fan fest (not much on Twitter and IG). :slink:

I'm just so crushed with how his first olympic event went for Nathan, I feel sooo sorry for him. :(

Nobody knows why Nathan switch his SP costume ? I like this change, but little curious about Next FS costume...

I wouldn't necessarily assume that he has a new FS costume, maybe he just likes this one better and decided to wear it as often as possible, when there's an opportunity like this, where it's not important to have two distinct ones.

I'm more curious as to why they removed the blingy outside zipper on the back... Do you think it could actually be because it wasn't well received...?
Or maybe Vera/Vera's team themselves felt that it didn't come across nicely on tv...?

Also, if they didn't make a completely new one... wouldn't this make the top part of the old costume a bit tighter around Nathan's torso now? That zipper was like half an inch in width...
Here's hoping he can still breath in it...

I don't understand why he'd be so nervous if it's "just" the team event? Or maybe he didn't want to do it to begin with, but he was forced to? Is that possible... I really hope he saves all his health, stamina, and calmness for the individual event. Go Nathan. Believe in yourself!!

Nathan BOI put LOTS of pressure on himself in every competition, he just looked cool. And he has said that he wanted to help Team USA with the Team medal (to help to put Team USA on higher position on the team podium perhaps) He wanted to do the team competition, to do the SP, opening Team Event with Nathan's SP is their (Nathan and TEAM usa)'s first choice.

Nathan said it is due to "overconfidence" but I think he is toooo nervous.

Besides, first OG, USA put a whole nations' weight on him (he is the only one figure skater that is featured heavily), and he is just 18, and is usually very nervous and put lots of pressure on himself in every competition AND there are another level of pressure to help in the team event.

BOI I don't know what to say and what to do to help you, but please take a deep breath(Or take a deep yawn:biggrin:). Don't you see that your teammates are helping you(when you are down) and is lifting you up by doing their job brilliantly in TE. You are not alone, and you are loved.

Go Team USA, Go Nathan BOI.

Passion, Connected.

I think he had a white out moment. Just a moment when talent skaters blank out and make unexpected mistakes. I know he’s going be hard at practice.

I have a strong motto. A loss makes us stronger. When I was in High School, my marching band went to a competition across the state. And it felt like everything was going wrong. People didn’t bring their band shoes, etc. but the last straw was when the compartment under the bus with half our instruments was locked and we couldn’t get them. They told us that half us were have to go on the field to make formations but with no instruments. It was humiliating and we were all demoralized. Then miraculous at the last minute they opened the bus and we got our instruments. We played our hearts outs. That day we won 5 trophies compared to two from last season. After that I became a firm believe that a loss can make you a better competitor.

Nathan is well trained and confident. He knows that. But maybe he needed a moment help him focus and to really put himself in the moment. I believe that’s what happened yesterday. I believe he’ll really attack his practices and go out there and nail his programs.

Never going to stop believing in my boy.

Same here. This fan fest feels like a family where everyone wishes the best for Nathan no matter what happens during the performance.

We'll see how the practices go this week, but for some reason I'm not that worried about Nathan at this point. I feel like he's right on the verge of putting out a spectacular program but just has to put it all together. It was kind of odd that all week in practice he'd been struggling with the 4F but nailing the 4T and 3A. Maybe that's what he meant when he said he was too excited and looking ahead, that he perhaps lost focus after landing the 4F. Kind of how Adam lost focus at the end of his Nationals FS.

Nathan is Yawning again (nervous much)... and he should have done solo 4F (specially when landing is not perfect) and 4T-3T like he practiced (perfectly) in his warm up... (this could even have 10% bonus).

But Nathan does played with warm-up music a bit, that is rare to see, maybe he wanna shake off some nervous vibe. maybe that is what he refers to as over-confidence...

The more I dwell on what could have happened, the sadder I am.... Hope Nathan BOI won't be like me:biggrin:

Continue sending great positive vibes to Nathan BOI, Good luck!

Brave and strong!

Nathan is strong. He'll regroup and bounce back. Hopefully that first skate got his nerves out, and he knows what to expect now. Sometimes the adrenaline rush gets to you and throws you off. Believe in yourself Nathan. You can do it!

The jet lag, time adjustment and jitters for his first Olympics are all factors for the SP result. Right after the disappointing Team Short, Nathan ran into the practice link which indicates Nathan is a strong guy to bounce back. I'll wait for Nathan's strong return to the individual event! :hap10:

Nathan is not doing lutz at al...

Well, to be fair, they didn't show the whole practice ice - so he may have done other jumps.

On the other hand, if his ankle really is swollen such that doing the lutz risks injuring it further, I'm not surprised by a lack of them. While I love Nathan's lutz (and I do - his 4Lz3T is truly outstanding) I'd rather he have clean, less risky skates than be injured (particularly before the individual event).

Unfortunately, an ankle issue was not unexpected considering he's hasn't been doing 3lz recently. But he did do a nice 4lz in practice, so he might still pull it out for the individual event. Depending on how others skate he could even still win with his Nationals layout, IMO.

Article: Figure Skater Nathan Chen Has a Secret Weapon Toward Olympic Gold: His Ballet Training

ETA: Forgot to mention, my supermarket is *FINALLY* stocking Nathan cereal! Still no Nathan coke, however.

A ballet article again.

Look, Nathan has good port-de-bras, and can extend his legs well. But none of his movement and definitely not his posture scream ballet to me. Just notice the way he moves in his Polovetsian Dances FS or his Le Corsaire SP. Hunched up shoulders, bent neck, and very slight (as opposed to exaggerated) acknowledgment of music cues with his arms. Modern movement like in his current programs, or hip-hop/commercial based movement like in his exhibitions is much more his style.

I'm a huge fan of Nathan, but that article is a stretch. Except that it might have made him more disciplined.

I knew it. Last year, he injured his left ankle at worlds when he fell on that 4Lz. Ankle injuries are a pest, they can get reinjured easily. I suspected he was injured around nationals too.

The good news for Nathan he has so many quads that he can avoid doing his 4Lz. But this is very upsetting. I hope they can take good care of his feet this week.

Nathan is wearing his long program costume without the shiny zipper.

Do we know if this means he got a new costume for the free? I can't imagine the costumes being switched, nor can I see USFS letting him wear the same thing for both programs.
