Nathan Chen

I feel assured watching Vincent, because I knew Vincent is doing clean SP and FS run-thu (90% complete) in practice almost every day.
but I always feel sooo nervous watching Nathan. My gut feeling won't lie to me..

I am gutted for Nathan, He just became 4-years older after this short program.

And Nathan is literally doing twice as much quads as any of other skaters in practice.

How much hard work he has put in , how much talent he has already had.... really really sorry for him :cry::cry::cry:

I feel very very sorry for Nathan that his Olympic experience so far has been so negative :( I think this has been a mixed of too much pressure\expectations placed on him, inexperience with dealing with such pressure and the constant change of layouts throughout the season that hasn't provided him with confidence in difficult moments.

I wish him to skate an amazing FS now that the pressure of a medal is off, and may this become a learning experience for him. He's so young he can easily make it to the 2022 OG and many WC and GPF!

(Sharing here too)

Nathan is so ridiculously casual, and I don’t even think that he knows it or thinks about it. The other Olympic nominees were just dressed to the nines and Nathan is just wearing black pants/jeans and his cooldown jacket, lol. :palmf: […] This was reflected when he talked to reporters: very casual, unfazed, but also keeps the habit of looking down while talking, which is why I think it’s an unaffected air. There was such a contrast between him and the other athletes/professional press, both of the latter seemed to be a lot more practiced at projecting their charisma.

Nathan: I told Vera what the story of the programs are, I told her the character and how I wanted to portray it. I also told her I wanted something contemporary, something modern, something different, and she gave me a whole bunch of different ideas, bunch of different sketches. Kinda made some mock costumes as we went into (long? Log? August?). We decided that was the cool fit for the situation. I kind of let her creative mind take over, you know.
Question: With respect to Mao’s Last Dancer, does this costume fit it? Or it’s kind of less contemporary…
Nathan: Honestly, I would object to that and say it’s a little more contemporary.

As I mentioned before, the organizers only allocated 15 minutes to autographs and I think they had to turn away about 30-40 people still in line. [...] Nathan was definitely the last to leave the ice - people kept coming up to him even at the exit. He even signed a skate awkwardly with one shoe still on the ice. :luv17: It was obvious his handler was trying to move him along. I'm not entirely sure Nathan knows how to say "no" tbh.

That was his FS costume with a more subtle zipper. I wonder if we'll see something new (please don't be monstrous, please don't be something montrous) for the individual events. ... (Part of me was worried in January that cutting the curls would be a Samson-like issue, and while I don't think it's actually true... :ohwell: ).

(Is it gauche to quote yourself? I'm gonna do it anyways.)

I know many of us were joking and lamenting about the haircut and cursing Vera Wang (or not so jokingly), but I can't help but be haunted by one of my earlier in-person observations of him that he doesn't know how to say "no." In that context, it was fans just wanting another moment of his time, but how does that play out in the management of his career?

The change of his image is particularly damning to me. He intimated that he likes the curly hair that his mother cut and that he would grow it back. If he liked it, why the change? Why the slightly fluffy hair now? Was he working on re-claiming himself since the cut and there is not enough time for him or the hair?

During my interview with him, he stated that he was provided with sketches of the costumes and talked it over with Vera; how much was his agreeing to whatever she put forward? I attributed it to “cool California boy” because I wanted to believe that he had people with experience at his back supporting him, NOT placing him into a mold of who they want him to be.

In his unscripted interviews, he says a lot of “honestly” – that had been a red-flag for my worry for a while. Sweetie, why is “honestly” your fall-back interjection, and how much media coaching have you received to need to clarify when you’re speaking from the heart and not the brain?

As much as I LOVE fluff and cute pieces and collectibles, I feel like there might have been a fundamental mismanagement of his obligations. His rising fame and hyper hype all happened so quickly and even small things like the size of venue and unprecedented access of the athletes at the Olympic send off events at US Nationals and Lakewood show how unprepared both USFSA and his local team were for the hoopla.

I personally made a ton of mistakes (mostly money and college related) at eighteen that haunted me for a while due to the naiveté of youth that everything would work out, so my heart aches that his are on such a huge stage. I also recognize that I desperately want someone to demonize, whether it be NBC, Americans only wanting winners, USFSA, the skate order, or even Raf, but I also know that it's none and all these things. What matters is how he responds. He already has come back strong from physical injuries, and every good story has a conflict before the climax; we might be still in the earlier phase instead of the latter.

--

There were a couple of younger girls in the audience at US Nationals that would yell out just before many performances, “Smile!”; I have to say that is all I really want now.

Please, Nathan, please just let us see you smile.

Just popping in here to offer words of encouragement to Nathan. Locate your calm center, pace yourself, rise above the hype. You are blessed with a remarkable talent and have wings to soar.

OT Raf may indeed see a mass exodus if he's not careful; he seems, I think, to regard his skaters mostly as commodities. A tough environment for developing talent is all well and good but he needs lessons in providing nurturing and support when it counts. Even Eteri is better than he in this regard...

Coming in to support Nathan...I'm really heartbroken for him, so young and already put into so much pressure. As many of you said, I think the main problem is the gigantic hype he has been invested with this whole season and that the adults in his life should have been handled a lot better. He seems a shy, introverted guy and to be chased by the cameras all the time is probably the least comfortable situation for him (not my imagination, he has hinted about that a lot of time)...he should have been given the time to pace himself rather than being used by his fed, his coach, his PR agent as a shining toy. I started worry the most when I saw his curls gone at nationals and wondered how much control of his own life he has and how much of this is in the hands of the people surrounding him, who take decisions for "his sake".
Also, I don't want to say that Rafael is responsible, but I would like to ask to all of you who know his method better how much he relies on full run throughs (if I'm correct, I read an AW interview where she mentioned she didn't do them, if so this is quite worrying.
Thanks for you answer in advance. As for Nathan, I hope he can have a redeeming moment today in order to end his Olympic experience with a positive note and all the best and happiness he can get for his future. If he decides to continue, which I of course hope as a fan, I hope he can do it more in his terms than in those of other people and hope that it can bring him joy (I'm a huge Yuna fan so I know how it is where the hype and pressure destroy your love for the sport).
Stay strong, Nathan! :agree:

They should have put up a "puppy station" at the olympics, like the one they had at US nationals this year...
And I'm saying this half as a joke, half seriously... I think getting cuddles from dogs would have offered some comfort and worked as a nice stress relief, which Nathan obviously needed... :(

Honestly, this is the one thing that has always puzzled me... Nathan mentioned several times that "this" is what he always wanted (competing at the olympics, the spotlight that comes with it)...
But if you're an introvert... that doesn't make sense, does it?

To me, he always looks awkward and uneasy whenever he's in a situation where he's expected to "sell" himself... be entertaining and witty, show some emotions about his results...
or worse, act animated and cheery (for instance the whole cheering and celebrating surrounding the team event... or that carpool karaoke thing, have you seen that? that was so not his thing)

He's clearly not the type to show emotions outwardly or put himself out there in such a way, talking about himself...
So yeah, I'm always uncomfortable when I watch him like this, because he doesn't seem comfortable either.

I’m so sorry for Nathan. He really is an amazing talent. His opening footwork was wonderful. I hope he finds it in himself to give the kind of performance he’s capable of tonight, and will be rooting for him to succeed.

@lappo Nathan does not do full run-thrus, he usually omits 50% of his program (mixed with changing lay-out), whereas Yuna do full-complete (100% includes every choreo detials) run-thrus. She has done completely clean FS run-thru's during her 2010 OG, 2013worlds and 2014 OG in official practices. And Yuna's SP's complete clean run-thu is just a piece of cake in practices, and that is not even the case for Nathan...

But Nathan does tons of quads outside run-thrus, way more than any other skaters...

I hated the constant switching of his program layout. He needed consistency and I have no idea why this didn't happen. You can't constantly keep changing the layouts.

@penniavaswen
as for Nathan's costume, besides the photos I linked that Nathan's FS looked exactly like Evan's rip-off. his new individual event SP costume is laughable (before SP) and ugly(after SP) (It is really sad for me to say this as his fan, but it is a consensus from his Chinese fans...)

Also, it makes his beautiful lines and arms less noticeable. His collared shirt with the 3/4 sleeves really showed off his amazing arm/hand accents and are part of the reason he got such high PCS. I don't understand what his team is thinking.

Nathan, you got this!! Just you and the ice, come on! :hap10:

Thanks for your answer. I think that it is possible to be very talented and ambitious towards your planned goal but not necessarily enjoying all that comes with it. There are people who like the spotlight, there are people who do not and Nathan seems to fall in this category; you can also see that from his demeanor in the galas, he always seems to avoid being in the middle of the attention. There is nothing wrong with it, this is one of the thing I appreciate most about him, I just hope that he skates because he likes it and not because he feels like he has to fulfill the expectations of parents, coaches, sponsors, fed and at this point the whole nation.
Huge pressure has already caused much damage to Yuna (who mentioned how difficult it was for her to return to FS after Vancouver...maybe had her fed not pressured her she could still be skating in shows), Gracie and Yulia; I really don't want this for Nathan and I hope the people surrounding him will start to put Nathan -the person-first.

If that is the case, I think Rafael has to rethink his whole approach, then. From what I gathered, FS is about muscle memory and how are you supposed to build it if you don't do run throughs in your training? Nathan is incredible for his ability to switch quads, but frankly I think that this ability should not be constantly trained in everyday practice, he should stick to a fixed layout and go there with the confidence of muscle memory and knowing that if something goes wrong he can rely on other quads. As for the number of quads, for the sake of his body I hope he looks at Boyang, who only do a limited amount in everyday practice. And again, I don't certainly blame Nathan: a coach is there for this.

Nathan is such an introvert and seems to be the kind of skater who'd rather let his skating do all the talking. He doesn't enjoy press conferences or public speaking in general (and definitely doesn't like discussing his emotions openly like some others do), but he always brings such amazing energy and passion during exhibitions. So far he hasn't really been able to do that this season in competitions IMO. There just seems to lack a kind of freedom that he had last season. I can't help thinking he has got to have THAT performance somewhere in him.

Nathan should go talk to Yuna. I mean, she's probably in the stadium/vicinity somewhere.

Huge pressure has already caused much damage to Yuna (who mentioned how difficult it was for her to return to FS after Vancouver...maybe had her fed not pressured her she could still be skating in shows)

I think the difference between the two of them is that she knows how to manage herself perfectly. Yes the fed pressured her, and it's awful they keep doing that to her to this day, but she never let them be the people who led her, except for those world's performances in 2010 and 2011.

Nathan needs an urgent change in how he is managed and how he manages himself. A coaching change and a sports psychologist would likely do him wonders.

I don't know what Nathan needs really but, whatever it is, I just hope he can figure it out and rebound from this experience.

Exactly!!!

Nathan needs a new coach and a sports psychologist.
Faltering at Worlds last year was a good indicator that he needs professional help on this. The perfoemances at the Olympics have put any doubt to rest.

Coaching change is needed because it is either he himself or Raf constantly messing with the jump layout and not doing full runthrughs. Doing way more jumps on the side in practice sessions than his competitors is also an alarming sign. I recall in an interview Nathan said that Raf wanted him to focus on quality of jumps instead of quantity. In other words, Raf really fails to change Nathan's habbit.

Obviously, Nathan needs someone strict to be able to bring necessary changes in his approach in daily practices to make him a champion.

A friend of mine who is a psychologist said to me last night that Nathan might be into novelty and not interested in sticking into a daily routine in his practices.

Unfortunately, that approach will not make a champion, I am afraid to say. Also, throwing a ton of unclean quads in the practice sessions is not really helping him in the judges' eyes, either. That approach also adds the risk of injuring himself.

All in all, Nathan definitely has all the goods to be a champion, but he needs a strong team to help him put together all his talents. His current team has failed to do so. It is time for a big change. Dare I say, Nathan really needs someone to seriously discipline him.

I just hope he has not got some injury or condition that he is not taking care of.

When he was a young junior in 2012, a perfect Nathan started having problems and it turned out he had Osgood Schlatter disease or something like that.

https://www.goldenskate.com/forum/showthread.php?38761-What-is-up-with-Nathan-Chen

He was off ice for a long time.

My hope is that he is a little young for all this Olympic pressure, and will be fine soon...like today :)
