Nathan Chen

If you go on face book and become his friend, you will be able to see it of course. Maybe he also put it on his web site. If you check Phillip Mills posts on Facebook maybe are open to the public.

Great read..
Before I say adieu I feel compelled to share something with all of you. In the ballet world we are excited to acknowledge a great choreographer or dancer who bring to our world beautiful art for our eyes to behold.

For many years at Ice Castle in Lake Arrowhead I had the pleasure of watching Lori Nichol mold Michelle Kwan into a beautiful skater. Now I have to say to you Lori thank you for not only Nathan Chen’s Maos Last Dancer but for so many amazing programs you have so graciously shared with all of us over the years. I don’t know if it’s because I was a ballet dancer that this hit me so hard, or because I just want to stand up and say to the world. Thank you Lori for your meticulously crafted programs filled with precision excellence!

Warmest gratitude,
Phillip

I recall reading Mr Mills talking about after Nathan moved from Salt Lake City to Lake Arrowhead, he continued ballet training with Mrs Mills.

I think Nathan has strong artistic and music education and training. The range and depth of his programs are remarkable. His PCS will only continue to go higher. Regarding the change of GOE range from -3+3 to -5+5, I think Nathan has the highest GOE on several quads (Lz and F) and is in top 3-10 GOE for Lo, S and T due to his correct takeoff, tight air position and non toe pick landing. Good GOE on quads will earn a lot more points than other elements. Cutting one jumping pass in the free skate will likely allow him do all quads, except 3A. So I am sure he will be more than fine with any rule change or new focus of ISU in the coming quad.

Nathan did went back to Lori before SA to brush up that showed his dedication to artistry, what happened at SA is just unfortunate (if you watched his practice videos at SA, his choreo is the fullest at SA). Then he got injured, sick..
TBH, to ask for the level of performance at US classic combined with 6 quads perhaps is just a little out of reach for Nathan's current ability. I don't even know if he can manage to do that even once in practice.
I was at SA but I don't remember Nathan ever doing a full run through there the way he did at Rostelecom. Do you know if there's a video in case I missed it? I think the choreography was never as good since he went to Lori between Rostelecom and SA to be honest. Maybe they changed the step sequence and the ending spins to get the levels, but the original was really the best and most impactful.

Thanks for sharing this insightful piece.

Thanks sheetz ;) , I missed some information about Nathan (although I follow him on twitter, instagram, facebook he isn't one of those who publish a lot)

The season is coming to an end, I hope Nathan can continue to skate and fulfill his desire to study also

PS: I don't know if it's my imagination or the curls are coming back :drama:

Nathan did NOT do full run-through or choreo run-through at SA like the ones he did in COR (just like you said). They changed his jump lay-out drastically from COR to SA. thus lots in-betweens were changed. COR layout/choreo are mostly(not exactly) the same as US Classic (4loop as the opening jump). Nathan only changed 4loop to 4luz-3t on the morning of COR FS competition. he did practiced 4loop at COR quite a bit. Thus COR pure choreo run-through is indeed quite close to the original one. But perhaps still not the very original one. I would consider US classic outing's choreo is the closest to the original choreo. he also did 3A as first jump in his SP in US classic (which is the original idea). As for SA what I mean fuller is that Nathan seems added more transitions before jumps in his SA practices(general impression from all SA practices) as well as changed stsq and spins. An effort to increase his GOE and levels.
As for stsq, I liked his perfect stsq practices both versions. in competition I think US classic, COR and OG stsq is the closest to perfect. I think original FS stsq has more of a purposed style and symmetry to it (e.g. later movements echoes to former ones) which also fits the rite of spring music chord arrangement very well. But the newer vision is more dramatic and exciting (exactly due to added more upper body gravity center drastic change move ).
I don't have additional videos (pretty much all valuable fancam clips are linked in this FF), my extra info(in this FF) are from my source who went to SA and observed Nathan very closely.

EDIT: when I get more time I will study Nathan's stsq (both new and older version) more and read the rule book again just for Nathan:biggrin:

on insta story lauren Gibbs asked Nathan why you walking funny?
What is his answer? I don't quite get it. Did he say "I cannot crease it" Oh Nathan....

Is it because this is some kinda requirement from NIKE who sponsored him all those fancy shoes.

Sounds like he says reach or maybe it is crease?? :scratch3: Maybe he's having pictures taken and they have to look fresh and new?

from the comments of Nathan's hockey post, one fan said "don't crease your shoes" and Romain liked it:laugh::biggrin:

The "crease" comment is normal around boys like Nathan. It's typical to want to keep expensive athletic shoes like this in mint condition. He doesn't want the leather to crease. It's so cute.

Sounds like he said he can't "keep these"....maybe he will sign them and have them put in the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame museum (if that exists) He probably has tons of shoes anyway like he has skating boots.

That’s funny, my brother who also collects Nike limited editions use crease all the time which is how I first heard the usage. It is extremely important to them to “protect” their gems LoL I’m sure Nathan is super stoked to be wearing the same collectors’ shoes as his fav NBA players. I’d love to collect a Nike Nathan collectible shoes!

The part I find most amusing is Nathan has done all these jump or combos except one.
