Nathan Chen

Thanks thanks thanks :)

Well, I've become a strong follower of my favorite IG patinators, and when I saw Nathan put up a miniclip of Bolt (his lovely pet) and a photo where he wrote: "Goodest boi watching the sunset" ahem ... he wrote " BOI " :cool14: (and think that some disheartened there censored that word)

The art of star wars made me laugh a lot :laugh2:

PS: Counted the days for Worlds Championship

@maryeli yes! After I saw Nathan himself wrote "BOI" on his insta story. I secretly inserted a little "boi" in my previous post (#3135)

Thanks for sharing all the goodies, the Japanese World promo is quite hilarious since it didn’t display his skating but physique haha. Too bad there aren’t many, if any, with post-competition commentary of his Oly FS, would love to hear what the pros think of his historic mark.

Hope he is rejuvenated and ready to rock the World \m/

^^I have to say that Nathan does look very handsome in his shorter hair do in a more traditional prince charming, teen idol kinda way.Although, his curls is more unique and personal to him.

:love::luv17::o:

I think Nathan Boi may have started to pay more attention to his imagery on media.
Check out his "artistic" "posing" photos on his insta, like https://www.instagram.com/p/BfdPvNkAujo/?taken-by=nathanwchen . https://www.instagram.com/p/BajgmSPAI-N/?taken-by=nathanwchen . https://www.instagram.com/p/BT0FfG8gnSH/?taken-by=nathanwchen

Nathan absolutely has certain visual style. also, I think Nathan has an eye for beauty. he took nice photos, not necessary the best photography technique, but the composition, angles, coloring(although mostly natual) are all great.

EDIT: anyways, Nathan's so talented in so many things. overall, he is just very intelligent (and artistic a higher form of intelligence ).

^^^Can I vote?! I think I prefer the curls, just because they're kind of unique!

A Nathan figure skating fan as well as ballet fan made an montage of Nathan and John Curry (who is arguably the most balletic figure skater ever). This fan found the balletic resemblance of Nathan's skating to John Curry. And S/he thinks Nathan is the skater that possess the most balletic quality in modern day figure skating.
https://twitter.com/twitter/statuses/973611149689159680

John Curry also is the only skater(other than Nathan) who have skated to "the the rite of spring"

funny thing I found while googling.
a quote from the book "Alone: The Triumph and Tragedy of John Curry"

"Then he came with Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, and one of the coaches said, ‘I wish someone would murder that kid’. People would say, how on earth can you skate to that?"

Also a description of John from the book, I made a few changes:biggrin:

"As a grown man, Nathan was so good-looking it was not unusual for women and men, gay or straight, to find themselves ogling him. His eyebrows are dark, his chin is strong and his nose and lips appear as if sculpted. There is also a cuteness - a vulnerability - which his face would never quite lose, and which his skating so evidently expressed."

As for this tenderness and vulnerability in Nathan's skating, people can watch Nathan's chopin program

Thanks everyone, for discussions and updates and especially video links.

Can I ask you, as fellow fans, to *please* add to this list? It's my therapy for whenever my brain flips-flops between feeling glad and sad about the Olympics.

Reasons Nathan Chen will be happy in his post-skating life regardless of what happens in skating:

1. he seems to get along well with his family
2. he has a lot to be proud of
3. he's an intelligent person
4. he's in good health
5. his family is better off financially now than when he first started skating
6. he has come back strong from setbacks and disappointments before (but does that really apply if it's, say, 4 or 6 years from now, and he is leaving the sport completely? no more trying again, in that case)

After that I drew a blank.
... except for maybe 7. dogs like drinking from from his ice bucket

Can you add more?
(Sorry for over-reacting to Kurt Browning's CBC Oly commentary and fretting about all those 'what if' questions Kurt prophecied...)
0_o

whenever I think about Kurt Browning's what ifs... I feel sad, it is like Michelle Kwan's OGM... But I really hope Nathan in his future figure skating career, this kinda mentality(the regrets, the what ifs) won't bother him. What I wanted as a fan is that Nathan can leave memorable programs, master pieces. Like Patrick said "be memorable"
A great skater are defined by their master piece programs. that is their forever legacy. Hope Nathan after his figure skating career, when he retires, he can be remembered not as whatever gold medalist but as the skater Nathan Chen.

@oatmella shake hands!! I was never so interested in men's skating as well. well I do follow men's skating (not just a 4 year OG viewer, and I do have quite a few favorites), but mostly, I am a lady's figure skating fan. And Yuna is also the only skater I loved (actually she is the one brought me into this crazy world of figure skating). Now it is Nathan!
Besides quiet confidence and charisma, and that textbook true lutz and that innate musicality and that sense of dance etc.... I think Nathan and Yuna also share another character that is they are both introvert and humble. But they @shine on the stage when they perform.

Nathan's 2015 Interview with TSL

TSL interview with Nathan July 2015
https://youtu.be/1s4iJf5Zsrw

This video just popped into my recommended list. It was mentioned back in 2015, on the first page of this fan thread, but I'm sure Nathan has gained way more new fans since then and most people won't have time to go back hundreds of pages and start at the beginning. Plus the video has less than 12K views, so it needs to be seen again.

I didn't start watching TSL until Jonathan came on so was pleasantly surprised at the great questions Jenny asked. There were some really funny ones on whether Nathan thinks he is spicier than Nam Nguyen and if Adam has ever given him any hairstyle tips :)

Talked about injuries, Michael Jackson program, his personality, Raf, 3A, who updates his Wiki page, home school vs public school, what he likes to do for fun.

Highlights: how it was uncomfortable for him to first do programs like Michael Jackson as a reserved personality type.
How he thought Raf was a scary and tough Russian guy at first. "He is very tough but thoughtful and respectful to me."

Definitely a must watch if you haven't seen it already.

The montage of John Curry and Nathan from the Japanese fan was beautiful, and it goes to show his dancing skill of classic and modern is an arsenal very few, if anyone, possesses. Thanks for sharing.

I compared Nathan's choreo change at the beginning of second half of his FS (after stsq, while the emotional erhu is playing). He changed the choreo there at US nationals and OG outing. He skipped the short spread eagle after the side-way bending choreo (like harp playing), as well as the little pause and upper body ballet arm accompanied that spread eagle.
Chinese fans liked the previous choreo version much better, it is more gentle, delicate and matched the purpose/phrasing of music really well, also showcase his balletic posture (instead of his hunched back). And wish Nathan can return back to the original choreo during worlds. They wanted to send this message to Nathan.

here is the original choreo at USIC, COR, SA, GPF (coincidentally, Nathan is wearing his old costume)
https://youtu.be/7NcZT_aVV9c?t=587 (USIC)
https://youtu.be/NE7UyqHxIJY?t=159 (COR)
https://youtu.be/xoBZKzIktGg?t=147 (COR choreo only practice)
https://youtu.be/4KAy9I94IGI?t=156 (SA)
https://youtu.be/LShY51K-dEg?t=155 (GPF)

here are the outings he skipped that spread-eagle (and the pause/music phrasing accompany it) (coincidentally, Nathan changed into his Vera costume)
https://youtu.be/oWGe__wx8R4?t=145 (US nationals)
https://youtu.be/wcq8p7MMDEI?t=159 (OG)

Thus, the seemingly loss of fluidity/tenderness/softness in certain crucial part of Nathan's FS chore/intepretation is not entirely due to the visual effect of Vera's costume.
