Nathan Chen

In fact Yuki did say they had to turn down sponsors because they got too many offers. So I assume they only chose the best ones.

Hindsight is 20-20, and hindsight tells me Yuki et al. talked the talk but didn't walk the walk, when it comes to giving Nathan breathing space, much less 'time to be a kid.' No doubt Nathan and his family have their share in this, but they've never been sponsored before and Yuki has arranged sponsorship deals before.

. Any ideas for Mozart if that’s Nathan’s favorite classical composer?

I'm consulting a music expert and will get back to you when I've heard from my teacher :) On my own I would say no to Requiem, piano concerto 23, the ones I've heard used recently, though I think Nathan can do a good job with piano concerto 23. The problem for me is Mozart is *my* favorite as well, and the music length limit often requires that the music be hacked, butchered, to fit the time limit. The better I know the music, the more abrupt a disruptive cut will sound to me. But assuming a smooth music cut (subjective, I know) could be made, I'd love to see the Jupiter Symphony, the Prague Symphony. Didn't Nathan say he'd seen the movie Amadeus? Well, how about Piano Concerto 20, K 466 in D minor? Or Concerto For Flute & Harp, K 299.

Basically because he's never gone back to the same outside choreographer twice. He's worked with Mills, Morozov, Zueva, Bourne, Nichol, Richaud, and even Adam Rippon. And so far the only one he's gone back to is Shae. I could easily see him continuing to work with her more in the future.

A few songs I think would suit him:
Firedance, Bill Whelan
The Feeling Begins, Peter Gabriel
Stairway to Heaven, Led Zepplin

For galas he should continue to choose whatever modern, edgy music he likes.

I like Stairway to Heaven the best of the pieces you named here. I agree with you re: his gala pieces.

Re: Lori. Thank you for explaining your logic, that Shae is the first he's gone to twice. But I think Lori and Nathan started to build something together. He himself said no one has explained to him via pictures why presenting himself in this way is advantageous, etc. He said he is interested in choreography. We know he has already done choreography for his exhibitions. But Lori is the first to entrust him with the weighty responsibility of brainstorming choreography for his Olympic season long program. Now the flip side of that is the more Nathan feels he owns his choreography, the more free he may feel to pare it down, to our eternal regret if it's a detail we love, but I don't see another choreographer who has invited him to collaborate in this way. If he stays with Raf, I find it even more likely that he'll stay with Lori. Raf trusts Lori not to poach his student. He didn't go back to Zueva because IMHO that would have been rubbing salt in Raf's wound. Plus, there was always the possibility that he'd have a miraculous reason and quit and go to Harvard--so why not work with two new people in possibly the very last season of his career? That's just more groundless speculation on my part. I really like how he developed after working with Lori. Shae guided him, too, but I guess I like to give all the credit to Lori because she made him take skating skills class, and let him create. It's ironic--he said he let his choreographers pick music for him

me speculating now: is that more of 'for my family's sake, I won't be a stubborn kid and pick what I like, instead I'll trust experts who supposedly know what's best for me?' *clarifying* just my speculation re: Nathan's thought process.

I'm sorry, it keeps coming back to my hatred of Vera Wang's work. It's not just the neutering of his curls, it's what it represents. WHEN WILL THIS TYRANNY END?????? where's the FSU soapbox emoticon when I need one?:palmf:

I also like Shae's work for him and would like to see a program that's significantly different from Nemesis and No Good in the future.

Thanks everyone for all your well-articulated thoughts. (hey, i learned to multi-quote, but in exchange, from now on capital letters may be deemed optional ;p

Totally OT: @skfan I studied Archaelogy at the University of Rome, which was ranked this year as the top 1 in the world: https://tech2.org/italy/la-sapienza...in-the-international-ranking-of-universities/ :)
And, to give you an idea of the difference, when I studied there I had to pay around 1200 euro each year in school taxes (it's around the same in dollars) for five years (plus I went to university in a city different from my own but that was my choice). Medicine, which is the one with the highest taxes because of all the laboratories, is around 2500-3000 a year so university is pretty much affordable (also, there are scolarship for kids with economical problems). Of course, your income once you find a job is nowhere near US incomes and I think we have among the highest taxes in Europe.

I didn’t *love* his OG FS costume - but the neckline and white collar looked really good on him. The sleeves looked a bit weird and disjointed though. Honestly I didn’t like any of the other Vera outfits very much. Of course absolute worst was the one vanilla sleeve which was so unflattering to the point that somehow he did look fat (!). Even if Nathan somehow personally loved all these costumes, he didn’t look particularly comfortable in any, particularly the zippers which bothered his nice neck and he didn’t zip them up all the way (or at least I think this was the case for the OG FS one).
I think Nathan looks amazing in white collars in general - thought he looked so handsome at the Grand Prix final gala in just the plain white collared shirt.

For Nathan, I think the short sleeve and pants outfit is best. So I can admire the line of his arms. There should be a little contrast between the color of the shirt and pants, IMHO. My 2nd choice, since it's unlikely he'll be willing to go back to wearing sleeves like in his Prelude and Allegro days, is black Nike T shirt and black jeans from 'no good' gala at nationals.

Also, the shirt needs to be soft, to move with him. It shouldn't be so stiff that when he skates, it looks like his neck has been swallowed up by his shoulders ( 'parachute.' )

lol at 'neutering of his curls'. But yeah, it's really not funny. I have to admit I felt kind of sick when I read in the ESPN article about Vera being the one behind him chopping off his curls. He even said something like he hoped she would forget about making him cut his hair, but he knew she wouldn't forget. ugh. I admit I thought his hair looked pretty good at OG, but way too generic and not himself at Nationals and not great if he was persuaded/forced to cut his hair.
I kind of hope he doesn't bring any Vera to Worlds, his plain old non costumes would be better imo. She clearly doesn't get him *at all* - lack of movement, comfort, wrong style, etc. Maybe she designed ok costumes for like Nancy Kerrigan but that was so long ago ...
Please no more Vera ever again. It's ok Nathan if you burn the costumes. Well maybe keep the one with the white collar since you skated the historic FS and your neck looks really good in it, lol.

The ESPN article said he can grow his hair back in the spring. No word on subsequent seasons, thus I'm on my soapbox ranting, hoping someone will either kill all my hopes or give me relief--when will the Vera Wang deal expire?

Seriously, thank you for saying the ESPN article made you feel sick, too. It comforts me to know I'm not alone in feeling this way.

Ballade no. 3 is on my favorite list. Fantasie Op 49 I know of but I need to listen to it some more. Sonata 2--of course I know the famous funeral march, but I look forward to delving into the entire piece. Glad you like Mozart Concerto no 20 suggestion.

Thanks all for the discussion and music suggestions.

Hi, I’m a lurker here posting for the first time.

1. Thanks to everyone for posting videos and interviews, it helps me get the most up to date news. I also wouldn’t have been able to watch Nathan’s programs over and over - thanks for the video links and downloads!

2. I hope y’all are asian or chinese because some of the stuff posted here is a little weird (chinese waiter?) I’m chinese and I’ve never thought of that lol!

It says Chinese *restaurant* waiter outfit---not Chinese waiter outfit. But if a joke needs this much explaining it was a bad one. I apologize to all who were offended.

Let me know what else offends you so I can properly sanitize my posts. I don't think it's unheard of or offensive to say Asian and Asian-American parents imbue a great sense of responsibility and filial duty into their children. If you don't hold the opinion that such children feel obligated to provide for their parents, to repay their parents, then we simply have different experiences. Thank you.

I do think Nathan possibly feels responsibility/self pressure due to his upbringing. I can understand why he told Rafael that he wanted to dedicate this season to his family. I know he should be placing himself first but I also feel for him so much because I get where he comes from ):

He has undoubtedly learned a lot from the OG though, I’m sure he will carry those lessons with him for a long time. Wishing the best for him at worlds!

I also really love Mozart Sonata no. 12 but not sure if it could work for a program.

I like this concerto a lot. Have you tried cutting music to 'skate-able' length? If you have, I'd love to hear your music edits. Thanks for all the music suggestions.

As for the music I'd like to see Nathan skating to (ofc this will never happen but let me dream  ) it's this song (listen from 00:00 to 01:35):
https://youtu.be/EGnJVfck-FA
It's actually a Ukrainian Christmas folk song, the famous 'Carol of the Bells' was based on it. But I think the original Ukrainian version is much more powerful and magical. I enjoyed Nathan + Russian song (Polovtsian Dances), Slavic languages fit him smh, imo.
I secretly hope one of his next season's programs will be Russian composers again

Rafael said he left Nathan and went to he Olympics, Nathan was doing jumps during the trainings and voila

If I recall correctly I believe he said he fell on a 3A or something.

I have to correct an error I made when I said Nathan had not returned to any outside choreographers besides Shae. I was reading Phillip Mills' blog entry from last year and apparently he choreographed a second show program for him to the Beatles song, Golden Slumbers which he performed at Sun Valley. Too bad no video of it has ever surfaced.

Speaking of Russian composers, I once saw this Rachmaninoff piece suggested: https://youtu.be/8-AsJ-EJ-f0 And I think it would indeed be a great piece of music for Nathan. The cello (or strings in general) with its strong melodic lines will allow Nathan to come out of his shell emotionally and express more outwardly, while the piano will still give him the space to express the subtle nuances like the way he did with Chopin.

I've always loved Schubert Impromptu #4, which was used in the movie Cutting Edge. It's probably better for an EX program but I'd like to see what Nathan could do with it.

Music rotation for Worlds practices are out and Nathan (and the rest of the USA men) are in Group 3, alongside the Canadians and Misha Ge.
Here's the schedule from the 19th to the 21st.

OMG, so many new posts!
about armpit sweat, maybe use baby powder. and that silk blue shirt has been stained with Nathan's sweat so much that there are salt stains everywhere on that shirt, maybe it is that he washed it too many times.

I managed to read all the updated post,
oh so many music suggestions. I need to study them..
yes, Many knowledgable Chinese skating fans also suggestion the jump approach(especially the way how Nathan trains it) is not sustainable for the long run. Quality of elements(GEO), components(PCS) is the way to go for him in the future.

@oatmella lace is not sequins, Nathan hated sequins but maybe he did not reject certain texture patterns or variations (check out the nike coat Nathan wore at 2018 US nationals, it has patterns, and Nathan seems like that coat very much). Could be sophisticated, understated, simple and modern as well.

Patrick's this costume has pattern but NOT made from sequins
