Totally OT: @skfan I studied Archaelogy at the University of Rome, which was ranked this year as the top 1 in the world:
https://tech2.org/italy/la-sapienza...in-the-international-ranking-of-universities/
And, to give you an idea of the difference, when I studied there I had to pay around 1200 euro each year in school taxes (it's around the same in dollars) for five years (plus I went to university in a city different from my own but that was my choice). Medicine, which is the one with the highest taxes because of all the laboratories, is around 2500-3000 a year so university is pretty much affordable (also, there are scolarship for kids with economical problems). Of course, your income once you find a job is nowhere near US incomes and I think we have among the highest taxes in Europe.
thank you lappo. I learn so much from everyone here.
speaking of which, i'm still looking forward to learning more about music from you. i seem to recall you said you'd be back with more suggestions?
As for the music I'd like to see Nathan skating to (ofc this will never happen but let me dream

) it's this song (listen from 00:00 to 01:35):
https://youtu.be/EGnJVfck-FA
It's actually a Ukrainian Christmas folk song, the famous 'Carol of the Bells' was based on it. But I think the original Ukrainian version is much more powerful and magical. I enjoyed Nathan + Russian song (Polovtsian Dances), Slavic languages fit him smh, imo.
I secretly hope one of his next season's programs will be Russian composers again
Thank you. I didn't know that the Carol of the bells came from this powerful original version! There's certainly plenty of wonderful Russian music. Please feel free to suggest a piece by a Russian composer, if one comes to mind.
I have to correct an error I made when I said Nathan had not returned to any outside choreographers besides Shae. I was reading Phillip Mills'
blog entry from last year and apparently he choreographed a second show program for him to the Beatles song,
Golden Slumbers which he performed at Sun Valley. Too bad no video of it has ever surfaced.
someday it would be great to see this program. i think Nathan has said he likes the Beatles, so it would be great to see him skate to Beatles music
Speaking of Russian composers, I once saw this Rachmaninoff piece suggested:
https://youtu.be/8-AsJ-EJ-f0 And I think it would indeed be a great piece of music for Nathan. The cello (or strings in general) with its strong melodic lines will allow Nathan to come out of his shell emotionally and express more outwardly, while the piano will still give him the space to express the subtle nuances like the way he did with Chopin.
shine, i'm very grateful you introduced me to a beautiful piece of music i wasn't familiar with. i'd love to see him skate to it, but it strikes me as difficult music to skate to. i think Lori should assign him this piece and say get back to me in a week with your proposed choreography for it

and then afterwards some spy in Canada can spill about how much of Nathan's choreo Lori kept, and what she changed. only the spy would know, because by the time he skates it at US nationals it might be quite different from its Lori-approved configuration
oh no, I don’t think I could edit music to a suitable skating length, unfortunately!
Going back to costumes, are we sure he wouldn’t go back to the transparent sleeve? ok probably not, but so nice to see his arms and hand movement. He did wear a transparent sleeve as part of his Prince Igor tunic (jacket?). But he was quoted in New York Times saying he genuinely dislikes sequins. So guess he secretly hated that costume with all the gold sequins and even a big gemstone.
I also really liked his lace shirt with the black shoulders, even with the button popping out at Nationals lol. It doesn’t seem that he hated it as he wore it in the Super Bowl commercial and it’s the main photo on his website.
It cannot be said enough times, I hope he ‘forgets’ to pack the Veras for Milan other than maybe white collar costume
I hope the same but unless vera released him from the deal I think we hope in vain. My sole remaining hope is the ordeal ends after this season.
His arms and hand movements are so beautiful. It's a shame those leggings-like purple grey things at the end of his sleeves in Oly LP program not only break the line of the arm but cover up the part of his hand near his wrists. Vera doesn't get him, as has been said-- that's the kindest possible interpretation of it. Her costumes *hide* what makes Nathan a skater i enjoy watching.
And really, even the practical aspects-- can't she find a zipper configuration that doesn't make him uncomfortable? he's always fidgeting with the neck of his costumes. If she can't find a suitable zipper, there are other ways to close up costumes, no?
I've always loved Schubert Impromptu #4, which was used in the movie Cutting Edge. It's probably better for an EX program but I'd like to see what Nathan could do with it.
Thank you sheetz. I listened and loved it-- it's a gem i should revisit more often. i think it can work for a short program. As you've said for an EX he'll probably pick non-classical... but wouldn't it be nice for him to have a classical EX for once? and at shows like SOI he can show people two different facets of his skating, if he has a 'rock' or 'rap' or 'modern' piece and a classical one for the other half of the show. just my hopes...
@skfan, maybe Vera's costume is sponsored, it maybe is an opportunity Vera saw to promote her brand, thus there are maybe some contract says that Vera will oversee Nathan's whole package including hair style during certain time period. Purely my speculations.
i pray it's over after this traumatic season. it would be nice if in future seasons his costumes garnered less press. it's not like there is only vera wang vs. head to toe sequins-- between these two extremes there are lots of other possibilites. other skaters have managed to look nice without a gazillion sequins, even Nathan himself in the past has managed without vera.
i prefer a soft casual shirt that doesn't bunch up like his shoulders have swallowed up his neck, short sleeve length so i can see his arms, and it doesn't have to have a single sequin or sparkle on it. black pants are nice. i like the nike shirt and black jeans look--heck, he can skate anything, even my favorite piece by Mozart, in short sleeve Nike and jeans, and i'd love it. i even prefer him skating in bunchy sweats to skating in vera wang.
omg, I hope this is not the case. And if there is a contract, hope it was a very short one and has ended by now.
If anything, Vera was the one who needed a haircut, not Nathan.
your word to G*d's ear. and thanks for the much needed laugh
this was beautiful, thank you very much for the link. aside from the visual pleasure i was also able to discover a beautiful piece of music, thanks to this video. very kind of you to bring it, very glad you brought that here
OG FS - why can’t nbc share his performance, even the clip on its app and website are u/a now...lame.
i think it's because NBC only got it licensed from IOC for a certain period. beyond that, it's no longer licensed. IOC is a bit silly with all this blocking. at least make a few select performances available. new fans who've only recently discovered a new exciting sport may want to point it out to their coworkers and friends weeks later, and then the nbc license has already expired, so they can't show their friends that cool snowboard move or, in the case of skating fans, a skater's remarkable program. *shrugs*
