Nathan Chen

The old Rafael frank interview was mentioned in the thread many times today.

But do you know that there's new interview with Rafael taken by the same journalist came up today?
The headline is "It seems Chen understood that you should trust your coach".
Quad axel practice mentioned.

https://mrsport.ria.ru/interview/20180324/1134547602.html

I was so happy to read it.

I hope this can be translated into English. I read a bit of it using google but kinda confused

Nathan training 4A(??!!) and no mention of components training e.g. SS, GOE etc. especially considering the very possible new rules change. rolling my eyes...

A coaching team should alway be ahead of the curve, so that they can foresee things. They did NOT manage to do that (actually failed) during OG. Now that Nathan won gold, suddenly there are some "secrets".

another thing during Nathan's presser bugged me just a bit is that Nathan seems really don't know much about the rule change, yet both Shoma and kayada seems have better idea.

considering Phill's "Nathan says, Raf says" article and Raf's 2 Russian interviews, I don't know how much I can believe Raf's interview. Should I take it seriously.

Seems Nathan's interview nowadays holds more accountability.

these are my concerns but I hope to read this Raf Russian interview again carefully to get a better understanding and a english translation would be better

Also, if Nathan is less competitive in the future due to components and GOE issue. please do not conveniently put everything onto Nathan, sth like "he does not like training those stuff" etc.

EDIT: Raf said "the advisors" have left, according his last Russian interview, I assuming he is hinting Nathan's family..

as for why still going for 6 quads plans when he does not need to. Nathan's answer in the presser seems more honest.

I wanted to translate it English but people on the internet always do it quicker than me so I'll just wait for them to do it :laugh:

About 4A - Rafael mentioned it because he was asked!! The journalist literally asked him "Your athlete has written himself into figure skating history landing 5 quads. Of course everyone wonders when will we see a 4axel performed by Nathan Chen?"

Also, there is that Champs Camp in the summer, I thought they discuss such things as rule changes there?

this is about why 6 quads when you do not need to.
“你上场前知道其他选手发生了什么事吗?)知道,推特上有个叫Jackie Wong的人一直在文字直播,我看到他们比得怎么样了。(那你应该知道你不用上六个四周都能赢)我想有更多的容错空间,前面如果成了那就能拉开分差,后面可以有更多空间。还有就是我知道队友们比的情况,我要尽全力保住三名额。 ”
a journalist asked Nathan this question. I don't know if it is included in the available presser video from ISU

- I think Nathan realized that, firstly, it's necessary to trust the coach, and, secondly, it is necessary to constantly move on. Otherwise, you won't last in figure skating for four years. You won't stay in skating even for 2 years as the technologies used to achieve the results have changed too much. Now everyone started to realize what should they do in order to get a result, everyone is trying to do it the shortest way. As soon as any information appears on the Internet, everybody immediately starts to analyze and use it. In the past, if someone showed something new it was at best filmed on a tape and passed to you in a few months. Now everything happens swiftly, including progress. Therefore, if the coach wants to do something new, he [the coach] must hide himself from everyone and collect his new masterpiece piece by piece. Then show the result. And hide again.

- Are you talking about yourself now?

- Of course. I have certain ideas, which, of course, I will not tell you now, because this is what I do for living as a coach.

I love this. This is the best way to act, really (remember Yuzuru this season). Think it's good that they insisted on doing 5 quads till the very end though they themselves knew Nathan was going to do 6 quads.

Vinvent had 6 quads in his program, Nathan needed to prepare for that.

True. Think about what Nathan has said: Six quads is too risky. Not thinking about 4Lo. Now in PJ's interview he says he's not trained 4-4 combo, even though Max Aaron has claimed to see him practice them. His team clearly has a plan but they don't want to reveal it to the public.

Lol for WHAT? THIS can't be called SIX quads. They weren't QUADS at all, many under rotations, not to mention the falls. I don't know if "six" quads was the plan of Vincent's team or he just wanted to try another quad while performing 'cause he had nothing to lose... But he clearly didn't deal with it, in the end.

At the Olys, he went for 5 quads but only landed 3 of them (with ur's?). Vincent is so eager for many quads, it's cool, but he has to train very much in order to stop under rotating and to become a threat even to those who jump only 4 quads in the FS.

Nathan didn't make 6 quads because of Vincent. Cause a) as Nathan, Vincent also said he's gonna do 5; b) if Nathan saw [and he said he was reading Jackie Wong's Twitter] how Vincent skated, he would know he didn't have to jump even 5 quads to overcome everyone incuding Vince LOL

PS I don't hate Vincent and admire his will to do so many quads, but your message really made me laugh

I hope Team Nathan had plan for Yuzuru's monstrous GOE like they has plan for other skaters' potential 5, 6 quads program.

Aaand? It's still not a threat even to Deniss Vasiljevs

Oh Vincent, I don't realized you have attempted 6 quads as well..

I love this. This is the best way to act, really (remember Yuzuru this season). Think it's good that they insisted on doing 5 quads till the very end though they themselves knew Nathan was going to do 6 quads.

i don't think that is because they try to hide Nathan's 6 quads ability thus they only compete 5 in competition which is public and can be put on internet immediately. I think it is because Nathan's 6-quads program never truly come together during this season in practice.
but they did hide Nathan's 4loop and showed it in the correct time and scared Yuzuru into injury.

Yet, still lost the most precious Gold medal of this season...

I personally do not like all this trick, accurately access you and your competitors' ability and potential is the right way to go.

Yes, few people noticed I guess, he had an ambitious plan.

at the beginning of this season, Vincent indeed said he is planning 5 quads and possibly do 6 depends depends on his condition(IN article). I think the last quads in Worlds is more of he has nothing to lose. he is fighting. I feel sorry for him, he had a back injury...

Sure and I knew that Nathan was on top of the situation before he stepped on ice and he did 6 quads because there were plenty room for errors.

yes, that is what happened, it is said in that Chinese quote I posted before, I will translate later, I was watching gala rn.
