Nathan Chen

read the translation, the last part is still confusing. some contradiction here and there.
to name one, in Phill's article, Raf is all about changing jump lay-out depends on how Nathan feels and what the competition is on the day, and he is so proud of that practice, now he is saying stick to the planned content regardless competition?

as for 4A, it is the Russian reporter brought it up, but Raf did admit that they are practicing it and it is a matter of condition...

over-all, he still sounds like he is just selling himself as a coach...

so about the future direction of Nathan's figure skating, still jump heavy, or more focused on components and GOE etc.

I don't know who is calling the shots now. Nathan will continue working with Raf, I think according to the Raf Russian interview, the so-called "advisors" are out (I could assume this russian interview is a sequel to the previous one, thus the "advisors" refers to Nathan's family. I really don't like this kinda bad-month of his students' family to media, whether it is true or not, especially when the other party is completely silent or even oblivious about this), And again, according to this interview, it seems Raf has confidence in Nathan's trust of him and he is the head coach oversees everything. thus I would assume it is Raf now calling shots.
So we will see, what role the choreographers and other specialist (e.g. SS if they even have one) will play in the coming season. Will they alter choreo and focus on jumps again.
tbh, I don't like skaters butcher choreographers' work... And choreographers usually have respect to those skaters who will realize their artistic vision. (re: TSL OG lady's recap with Tom Dickson)
And in many cases, seasoned skaters learned the most actually from the choreographer, for example, in Yuna's case she stayed in TCC for the sake of the choreographers there and kept her choreographer even after leaving TCC.

Also, Nathan could be the one to calling the shots. I don't think it is necessary a bad thing, we discussed before, Nathan needs to take ownership of his figure skating career. I just don't wanna Nathan to become the scapegoat whenever bad results happened in the future.

I think he's talking about sticking to the planned content because of the OG. Like, maybe he's changed the tactics, understood that sticking to a plan is wasy better and/or he wants to show the FS society that he and Nathan now listen to each other (not as at the Olys), that this 6-quad program as planned from the very beginnig and it wasn' that Nathan just showed up at Rafael's and told him "okay, I'm going for 6 quads"

I understand your sadness, but I truly don't think Nathan will be adversely harmed by the rule changes. For one thing, he will likely be a beneficiary of reputational judging now that he has a world title. For another, as his body continues to mature and he improves his overall skating his jumps should also continue to improve. He's said his goal is to get to where his quads feel like triples, so I find it unlikely that he will be significantly watering down his jumps.

this is an extremely high standard but Nathan indeed said that, I hope he can achieve that. than he will be a superhero and invincible:biggrin:

i will just copy and paste what he said here, seems he did not mention OG at all to me, and if like you said, Raf got the feedback about lay-out change from FS community, that is nice. I hope they really get it.

"When you wish the competitors to skate well and understand your clean skate will beat them anyway it creates a good and a positive mood. Because you have a goal you are concentrated on. In such a case there is no need watching around and reacting to the situation. For example after the SP I was approached by many who said `why do you bother with 6 quads? Do 3 and you will win!'. You on the other hand, asked me after the LP what do Nathan and I plan doing in the LP. And I replied `the planned content'. I teach Nathan that: the professional athlete should not care how did the others skated. Important what he has in his planned content. 6 quads? Go and do them. No need to play games, you have to compete with yourself."

Nathan checking rockerskating during the competition goes against Raf's teaching then lol

The one thing that I really do not like about Raf is that he doesn't seem to take accountability when things don't go well. Seriously the old guy should learn from Nathan on this aspect.

that's it, Raf really rubs me in the wrong places, after I became a Nathan fan and started to follow Nathan's figure skating very closely.
Also, regardless culture background, maybe it is OK in Russia, but now you are in USA and your students' family is Chinese, maybe just a little bit respect.

yeah, I was about to translate this
"“你上场前知道其他选手发生了什么事吗?)知道,推特上有个叫Jackie Wong的人一直在文字直播,我看到他们比得怎么样了。(那你应该知道你不用上六个四周都能赢)我想有更多 的容错空间,前面如果成了那就能拉开分差,后面可以有更多空间。还有就是我知道队友们比的情况,我要尽全力 保住三名额。 ”"
this is some extra info provided by a reporter that is not in the pressor vidoe.
Q: are you aware what happened to other skaters before you take the ice
A: I know, there is a Jackie Wong on twitter, tweeting the results, I read it thus I know how they did,
Q:then you must know you don't need 6 quads to win
A: I hope to have more room for mistakes, if I am successful in the first half, the score gap could be stretched, thus I will have more room for mistakes in later half, Also, I know how I teammates did, I have to do my best to keep the 3 spots for US.

from the reporter: yes Nathan is checking tweeter even right before his FS

This is Nathan's version why doing 6 quads when he even does not need to, his teammate's results and the responsibility to keep 3 spots also contributed to that decision

I remember seeing this interview. He also mentioned that he didn't want to disappoint audience, because they deserved a good performance. He said he was also wondering if something wrong with the ice, so he did a tripple to check the ice and it was fine. The he just trusted his training.

yes, he said all these too.

idk if I really buy Nathan's explanation of why he did 6 quads. I think part of it was that it kind of bothered him that he got so close to 6 clean quads at OG, and wanted to do it here. Maybe a clean 6 quad program will be made even more impossible under the rules. Nathan tries to be low-key about it, but I think he does care about being the first to achieve pinnacles in the sport. Honestly I would give him first 4F - the other guy's is more like a 4'f' to me lol.
could be, and poor baby did not achieve that. he even talked a little about it in press. He must have blamed himself for a few seconds.

actually, I was thinking a clean 6 quads FS with a world record score is a perfect ending of the old rules. it did not come true, like my OGM dream for Nathan

I am hurting...:sad21: jk:biggrin:

agreed, there is zero incentive to push for higher, riskier tech (and again I'm saying for the 1000x time, this is a sport) and it will instead be punished. yeah I know some miss the 1990s style programs, but I personally do not - but guess the programs will have to go back to the old 6.0 days.
I guess Nathan should just go back to his old programs like Hungarian Rhapsody then lol.
Even if they devalue the jumps a bit jumps are still by far the highest scoring elements in a program, and as long as it stays that way skaters will always have incentive to try them. There's also a long way between doing 6 quads and not doing any at all and just because the quads are now worth a little less it doesn't mean skaters will all of a sudden stop doing them. At the same time, I don't think you need to necessarily be doing 6 quads to be considered pushing the sport technically, IMO. What the rule change does is that it might force skaters to improve the quality of the quad before they go for the next big quad.

A six quad program is definately possible under the new rules. It’s the seven quad that’s now practically impossible.

What he is saying is that if they planned 5 quads, they would stick to 5 quads regardless of what other competitors did in that competition. Some skaters play the game of adding or taking out jumps based on what previous skaters have done to minimize the level of risk while ensuring a win and looks like Raf is against that. This is something different than changing jump layout based on how Nathan *himself* feels on the day.

I guess it depends on how the +/-5 GOE is used/abused. I am still not in favor of even greater subjectivity in judging, but I guess we will see what happens. Another thought I had was that overall placements may not be affected so much, but that the gap between scores wouldn’t be so large - like Nathan beating everyone by 50-100 pts.
If you think about it, the current number of points attributed to each element are all arbitrary to begin with. So IMO changing the current state really doesn't make things any more or less subjective than they already were. And on paper, at least, GOE is not supposed to be subjective because how well an element is done can and should be assessed objectively from a purely technical point of view, even though the actual execution of such judgement may not always be objective.

aww...I guess all the more motivation for him to be (secretly working) on a 4-4 :D

I actually wouldn’t be *that* shocked if he pulled off a 4T-4T. Seems like he can do the 3T from a near standstill.

or maybe like in Raf's russian interview hinted land a 4A

speaking of do jump in a standstill, Yuzuru actually can land a 3A in standstill.

also, i read from SLT, they may delete one jump pass, so no 7 quad program, but maybe achieved by doing 4-4
and they may "limiting the number of quads that can be repeated."
which does give Nathan a favor, he can do five different kinds of quads, so if only one quad can be repeated, than he still can do 6 quads, not any other skaters in this planet.

Nathan wants to be chill about it - but I'm sure he would want to be the first to land 4A.

I don't doubt that Yuzuru can get the rotation, but it's a ton of force on the landing and his ankles seem prone to injury?

i think I have seen a video of Yuzuru land a 3A on ice from stand still, maybe under-rotated, but it is a good attempt .

As for whoever can land 4A, I don't kr. I think Nathan's 3A  is not even that good. so it is kinda funny to think Nathan be the first to land 4A. Maybe he can land a wonky one, but still be recognized as the first like the dude who landed the first 4lz.

in Ramain's insta story, Nathan is leaving voice msg to someone
and he is so hot in that suit, I would like more banquet photo of Nathan.
