Nathan Chen

I mean....if people have no problem seeing a married man and an betrothed woman dancing to such a song with each other, they shouldn't have a problem with Ashley and Nathan? And remember, Nathan and Ashley didn't start talking to each other until 2016.

ETA: I guess the awkwardness didn't bother me that much because I was so focused on watching Nathan and his awesome dancing as always

have you been watching skating long enough to remember such classic SOI numbers as 'tell me everything,' featuring lyrics like... 'are you sleeping with her, because i am'? that also featured partner swapping, just like this one (although 'tell me everything' involved partner swapping on a much larger scale). costumes aren't the only things that get recycled on SOI tours. :slink:

that said, nathan's ballet teachers taught him how to become a character, to step out of being nathan himself. i agree with oatmella that he and ashley can make a concerted effort to be more convincing in their roles.

OKAY, I finally read everything.
I think Nathan really is the best in the boy's number, he is very into it and some of the move, like the body roll (in boys number not with Ash) and his jazzy arm is perfect. But Nathan needs to work on his mohawk, yes learn from Ice Dancers, you all know my standard ;)
As for "Back from the Edge" I just realized that Nathan is improvising all the time, there is no fixed choreo (and he choreoed himself, so it does not matter), he just dance whatever comes to his mind, but this is so cute and relatable though, I could already imagine Nathan indulge himself in dance in a college night club, just like all of us, but he can improvise on ICE. that must feel even better!!

i like some of the changes he's made to 'back from the edge' based on short clips from orlando. i wish someone had taken a fancam of the entire piece.

Also, about Nathan's artistry.
I have a strong feeling that, he really is just feeling/learning it by himself.
in SOI, I can see his clear effort in improving his artistry in "Nemesis" or "Back from the edge". but I think he still need some guidance and enlightenment from professionals or figure skating artistry masters.

Maybe some kind (or not so kind) Yale students will indulge us with video of Nathan partying lol
I would hope they respect his privacy though haha

Nathan is pretty private but he is also very nice, if Nathan caught you video taping him in unsolicited situations, he may just let it be. Nathan is sooo nice. hopefully, everyone including fans will respect his privacy a little.

I wanted to address the "Shape of You" program in SOI.

I think Nathan's doing a really good job with the choreography for what it is. Especially when they should have paired him with someone significantly shorter than him, perhaps Karen, Ashley is too tall/too close to Nathan's height and you can tell when he tries to spin her around.

It's a very badly choreographed number and even the ice dancers are having issues and looking very bored with it, there is no variant in the movement whatsoever.

That is a cute pic and aww he looks so so exhausted but still smizing for the fans.

I heard Nathan is pretty slim in person. A photographer at worlds said he is ‘tiny’.

awwwwh oatmella actually "tiny" is the word that I used then I changed it into "slim" thought "tiny" maybe a little disrespectful to Nathan, if he secretly read this FF.
Anyways, Nathan is so tiny and cute, I used to say I can put him in my pocket. love him soooo much:luv17::love::o:

Just out of curiosity, what is wrong with Nathan's mohawk...? Where/When did he do it badly? :scratch2:

This. And yeah, especially the parts where he has to spin her... :palmf:
And it's not only the height, he's also slimmer than her. I know these are some well-trodden gender stereotypes of how a man and a woman should look like together, but it's something that we all grew up with, and it looks odd that he's tinier than her.
(and yeah, he looks visibly uncomfortable with the role he's supposed to play with her, and who can blame him...)

I don't think it's that Nathan is "slimmer" than her, but rather their weight is distributed differently. Ashley is quite small TBH, it's just they are only a few inches apart in height, and that really makes a difference with dance programs and movement. It's too bad that Madison Chock is injured and had to have surgery because she and Evan Bates would have been perfect for this number and then there wouldn't be as much awkwardness with using the singles skaters. (and no I do not mean that in a negative way). Jeff Buttle needs to stay away from trying to choreograph ice dance, even the one he attempted to put together for the 2016 tour was awful.:palmf:

Ok that cowboy trick roping I was thinking maybe caused by the height, and I agree the number overall is boring cos I checked on some Charlie/Meryl fan posts saying it was the least liked piece of their dances. When the pairs were apart, they each looked like they were just doing their own movements. Oh well hopefully they can later add some minor changes?

I doubt it because Jeff is no longer physically with the tour. He was only at the first show and then moved on to things he has to do with choreographing the Canada tour and then other shows in Asia.

Finally watched Nathan's Worlds FS on TV this afternoon. Love love his beautiful 4lz, the winner of Prudential Challenge Move!!! He well deserves it :)

The first half of the program is my favorite, with well balanced technique and artistry. The second half is cramped with jumps, of which two are combos. I wish he could cut down the number of quads and focus more on the artistic part of the skating.

Heard a rumor that ISU is going to restrict how many times a same type of quad can be allowed in FS. For example, in the past, 4lz can be used twice, alone and in a combo. But in the future, it may be only used once, regardless alone or in a combo. Not sure if it is true or not. If true, currently only Nathan could maintain his five quad program. So proud of him!

In terms of freckles, yes, Nathan does have a few. My little girl pointed out that she and Nathan share one freckle exactly at the same position, on the tip of the nose :) Very cute!
