Nathan Chen

I spotted Ms Grosscup sit with Nathan in those 2012 K&C:)

She really seems like the perfect first coach for Nathan. That moment at baby Nathan’s first show (?) where he was wearing white skates and she picked him up off the ice 😍

me neither, this is my first witness Nathan's B-day with fellow Nathan fans. I heard last time, Nathan was very happy and he liked lots of people's birthday gift posts on twitter.

I love baby Nathan's spider program, he was so well nurtured from the beginning by so many people!

Thanks sheetz for sharing the links.

Nathan has been blessed not only by his obvious physical and mental gifts but also by favorable circumstances - born in an ideal location - Salt Lake City with access to great rinks, a wonderful and loving family, older brothers who played hockey which got him interested in skating in the first place, older sisters who danced and he followed to ballet, parents who sacrificed so much for him so he could have opportunities to succeed ... and his birthday seems a good day to say Thank You to Ms. Hetty Wang and Mr. Zhidong Chen for bringing Nathan/巍巍 into the world💞

special thanks to Nathan's real Dad Mr. Zhidong Chen. The most invisible member of the Chen fam, yet took the heavy lifting job of supporting the whole family financially. in the most difficult times have to take multiple jobs .

Maybe the humble Nathan took this character after his father.

One thing that has always stood out to me when watching earlier Nathan programs is his blade work and the level of complexity he was able to handle - and that was really why people thought he was such a prodigy. Even though he didn't have the power and depth of edge he does now, it was striking the way his blades interacted with the ice. I think his weight is more towards the center/back of his blades (as oppose to being more towards the toe pick) which enables him to execute turns easily and smoothly, and his stroking and glide more effortless. He still has that quality today and it's particularly obvious during his step sequences. This is why I believe he really could become phenomenal in skating skills as he has all the right ingredients - either from natural talent or from having been taught very strong fundamentals, or a combination of both. What he needs now is more knee bend and power - and I think he can get there easily if he sets his mind to.

Maybe there are some reasons behind that he purposely doesn't do more knee bend?
Hmm I kind of doubt it. It's such a fundamental thing and I've never really heard of skaters not being able to achieve knee bend due to injuries. I think it's really just that he hasn't had a coach who emphasizes such things. My guess is that he may learn things from the choreographers but kind of slowly forget about the importance of them after he goes home. And since jumps have taken such precedence in the past 3 seasons, ss seems to have been set in the back burner. I was watching him during official practices at SA and it struck me how little he practiced stroking and gliding compared to other skaters and how quickly he went to jumping. Of course official practices at comps could be very different than training back home, but the difference I saw between his and other skaters' approach did bother me a bit.
