Nathan Chen

Definitely see the similarities. So Evan actually played a role in costume design for Nathan? Interesting to know.

i posted before in this FF, Nathan's brush stroke costume actually is a rip-off of one of Evan's previous show costume (and linked the comparison page). Not many Nathan fans were happy about that..

Not sure how much Nathan paid Vera for all of these.

Ic3Rabbit - thanks for sharing! The cut of the pants look quite similar as well as well as the cut of the form-fitting tops. Similar color palette as well - charcoal, black and white/vanilla. Nathan's pants look lower in the waist though.

yyyskate - yes, looks like Nathan did wear the same pants for all his Vera uniforms :)

I don't think Nathan had to pay Vera for these uniforms ... though wonder if he had to return them all to her ?

Paid or not, it’s a big deal that a big brand like Vera Wang designed for him. I’m sure he’s thankful. Vera I think used to be a skater herself and has designed for other skaters before Evan came on board iirc.

Kwan and Kerrigan only. No men until Lysacek. And yes Vera was a skater.

Brush stroke costume?! Are you talking about the one that looks like its wrapped around him in the front? If so, that wasn't initially a show costume for Evan, but a competition one.

Interesting - Evan was the first male skater that Vera designed for - is Nathan the second? http://people.com/style/vera-wang-interview-design-figure-skating-costumes/

After all of the other costumes Wang had created, there was only one moment when she wanted to quit: the 2010 Olympics, which was also her first time dressing a male figure skater. “With Evan [Lysacek], I tried to back out in July. I woke up one night with hot flashes and a rash. The technology of designing for him worried me,” she said.

The process of designing figure skating costumes for a man posed a much different challenge than designing for a woman. “We had to quadruple stitch the seams. Triple stitching was not enough for his torque,” Wang told us. “And Evan, being a man and having to jump incessantly, was very conscious of the weight of fabric. It had to be as thin as possible.”

Vera on designing Nathan's uniforms: https://www.vogue.com/article/nathan-chen-vera-wang-team-usa-celebrity-olympics-style

“No two skaters share the same energy, creativity, athleticism, musicality, or style,” said Vera Wang before this year’s Olympic games started in PyeongChang, South Korea. “Nathan [Chen]reflects a new freedom not only in his feats of tackling quad jumps, but a very modern sense of music and movement that has influenced the artistic side of skating.”

“For Nathan, I wanted to express a certain geometry and nonchalance without sacrificing the dignity or significance of an Olympic competitor,” she says. The aim “was to keep things cool and riff off a casual, easy vibe.” Wang achieved her goal through a palette of black, gray, and white, starting with 30 designs and working with Chen to edit them down. “These are not show costumes, but sleek, modern interpretations of athleticism.”

That fiercely competitive spirit was on display from the moment Chen hit the ice in a monochrome look in black for his short program. Wang, who was inspired by Rothko paintings for the wardrobe, added patchwork paneling in subtly varying shades and textures, while deploying contrasting white panels and stripes for other looks. “Designing skating costumes are challenging as they have to satisfy so many restrictions," she says. "Range of motion, enhance choreography, flatter the skaters physically, withstand huge fluctuations the body undergoes while performing, and above all, the comfort factor!” And though Chen took home bronze for Team USA, his PyeongChang outings are just the start of what Wang thinks will be a brilliant career. “I found this both challenging and exciting,” Wang says of working with figure skating’s latest all-star. “He clearly has a point of view—and his own very cool sense of style!”

Vera designed Michelle Kwan's costumes.

Good article above. Vera captured the essence of Nathan’s skating very well. I had a new found appreciation for Vera and grew to love the uniforms she designed. As long as she stays away from Nathan’s hair, I’d be happy to see more Vera clothes on Nathan.

Not that I am aware. :)

Thank you. I figured she’s pretty exclusive about who she works with given how big of a name she is. I appreciate the info :)

I liked Nathan’s haircut. He looks good with curls and without, I really don’t know why people freaked out about it, it’s not like he looked horrible lol. He looked more grown and mature.

I got a sense that Nathan didn’t want to cut off all the curls. But was told to do so.

Thank you for the info, Ic3Rabbit

One more question this FF has is that does Nathan gets to keep those uniforms?

IIRC yes.

ETA: The only other place they could've gone is in a skating museum.
