I was underwhelmed by MLD for a lot of reasons. From the music to the choreography to the costume. It was simply not Nathan.

His light feet, beautiful turns and groovy demeanor reminds me of Fred Astaire, old Hollywood will be so ahhh glorious.

Interesting...it actually turned out to be one of the best movie soundtracks I've come across. And I'm grateful Lori brought it to my attention :)
 
I like MLD because of the back story and how much time Nathan (and Lori) invested into it. Also what Li Cunxin told Nathan was so relevant and necessary after his Olympic journey. The story just totally goes with what Nathan ended up experiencing this season and on top of that it’s forever iconic now given the historic feats and the connection with Mao Asada. I honestly have to give Lori credit, she literally could not have picked music that was anymore encompassing of Nathan’s journey this year, it’s actually kinda eerie lol

Interesting, I remember someone saying that Jason was like Fred Astaire and Nathan was like Gene Kelly (I forgot the original topic). Nathan a Gene or a Fred? What do you think? Haha
 
Gene Kelly was more athletic

But Fred Astaire made everything look quite effortless

Fred Astaire was known for being private though and didn't like anyone to watch him rehearse - and I think even had guards to prevent people from doing so.
 
I'd still like to see Nathan work with Browning, Abbott, or Cousins: Or a combo of them. ;)

When she picked it, nobody knew how his Olympics would turn out. So the fact it ended up mirroring his Olympics struggle didn’t justify the choice. It’s almost bad luck. Some music and choreography can hide a skater’s weakness. I thought Alina’s LP did it masterfully. On the contrary, Nathan’s LP highlighted emptiness and lack of artistry to many. Some of it was his own doing by watering down certain moves. Even with the 6 quads, it wasn’t widely enjoyed as a program outside of Nathan fans. It lacks broad appeal.

Yes he invested into it by talking to Li and did his research. It was because he said at interviews that he couldn’t relate to the story early on. It was acquired, rather than something naturally came from within like Nemesis or Le Corsaire. He completely owned these two programs.

Not sure I understand the Mao Asada reference.
 
Broad appeal is not the point of a competitive program to me honestly (though I disagree this one didn’t have it, go outside of figure skating circles and plenty enjoyed it from the Olympics), that’s just a bonus. What the skater likes and what the judges like are the priority, audience is a distant third. He also wasn’t into Nemesis at first either and that clearly was a good choice to keep so his initial reactions don’t really mean much. He tends to not like a lot of his music programs at first. He eventually connected with it and his journey ended up mirroring the story (which if you know the full story is not what I personally consider bad luck, quite inspirational actually) which makes it even more special to him and can relate to it even more so now on his own personal level. Obviously Lori wouldn’t have known how it’d turn out while picking this program but the fact that it came full circle is the cool part about it, sometimes it’s not all about the wins but how to got where you are. It’s a very unique experience for him and I’m glad he got to have it. Whether others enjoy it or not is not really important as long as he got something out of it, which he clearly did. It’s now an iconic program and there’s a lot of emotion involved in it for many, including Nathan.

If people don’t like it on the program’s own merit, cool, but too many intangibles with that program involved for me to ever dislike it personally.

Seems that Nathan wasn't into quite a few of his programs at first.

Chattanooga Choo-Choo, Michael Jackson, Saint-Saens, MLD. I'm not sure I would put Nemesis in this category as I think though he initially may have thought the music not suitable, he seemed to think it was cool shortly after.

Music I am aware of that he chose himself for programs: Kung Fu Panda, Hungarian Rhapsody, Wall-E, The Godfather. All from junior/baby days.

I understand what *we* want or like is not #1 priority, but we can still express our opinions about the programs :)

So I don’t agree that this LP highlighted emptiness or lack of artirstry. In fact, when it was first performed or performed at Rostelecom, or the way it was done in Rostelecom runthrough, it was full of emotions and artistic nuances. It was a beautiful program to me even without knowing the backstory. I saw comments such as “every move in this program is choreographed to every nuance of the music”, “this is a wowza Olympic program”, “I’m stunned!” when it was debuted in SLC. If he decided to take out choreography and de-emphasize the performance aspect of it as the season went on to focus on his quad quest, it wasn’t Lori’s fault. And really, no choreographer can help him even in the future if that’s the decision he makes.

I've never seen Nathan looking so happy; he looks like a youthful little kid in that group pic. That 2Chenzforever person could well be a teenage fangirl, just joking around. For example, I took a look at the person with the screen name nathanchenhusband, and she's 13 years old. Either way, it is heartening to see that so many people like Nathan. Back when I was in college, there was all this talk about Asian men not being seen as attractive. Certainly people of all ethnicities find Nathan to be attractive!
 
Wow though I don’t ship them because they’re young and so much to live for, but to be poignant negative about 2chenz is something else. Yes we don’t know how often they do see each other or don’t...but believe what it feels good 🤣🤣

Personally I think kpop boyband thing really helped, but hotness comes with commanding presence which he possesses and his all-in-one package is just too much not to fangirl 😁
