Nathan Chen

thanks sheetz for sharing!

Yeah I thought Yale wouldn’t allow that - but maybe the regular policies/rules don’t apply to Nathan :).

Lucky kids - do they not have to go to school? Maybe they’re homeschooled too - or it’s worth taking a day off if Nathan is going to be at the rink!

Wow a repost... haha

The lil girl is so cute! Thanks for the news link, so wonderful to have young skaters meet their role models to keep moving forward!

Was it Harvard where if you took an extended leave of absence then you'd have to reapply for admission? If that's the case then they could just come to a prior agreement where the reapplication would be automatically approved.

Well who knows, that could be his version of worst case scenario if he finds school and training hard to balance or it could also be his plan all along. Whatever it is, I’m sure he got the green light from Yale before he confirmed his admission. But it’s confirmation that 2022 is his priority.

I read too many Yale articles and vaguely remember that it seems to be the case with Yale as well. Need to go back to check on that again. I couldn't remember if it was from that thread on Edge or FSU that take leave more than one year needs some complicated process for the exception, but it seems it is not doable, I guess that is one of the items he discussed with the Yale rep who reached out. Preparing for Olympics should be pretty valid/good reason to request extended leave.

First it was one year try on period, now he throws out 2 year plan. He is way more serious about Yale than some people expected and has been working hard on his Yale plan since when he got the offer. I agree with oatmella, he doesn't share all the information, but to me whatever he has shared is pretty much he sets his mind to.

I really don't want him being approached by reporters with any college and coach questions anymore.

review of Anaheim show from the person who took the ice dance video of Nathan/Karen: https://jennifercomeaux.blogspot.com/2018/05/2018-stars-on-ice.html

'I've attended the Stars on Ice show in Anaheim the past three years, and I've never seen the Honda Center as packed as it was last Saturday night. The Olympic year boost plus the popularity of Adam Rippon and Nathan Chen brought the fans out in full force. The third level of the arena was practically full!

Before I get to the show, I must mention some fun moments from the rehearsal. The number of skaters practicing with their music was less than previous years, but the ones who did provided a lot of entertainment. Meryl Davis and Charlie White played the music for their fast program, and they were flying around the ice. Charlie in particular seemed to be in quite the hyper mood, chatting with all the skaters on the ice. Nathan Chen also did a run-through, and he put one thousand percent energy into all his footwork. He also nailed a couple of quads. The funniest part of the rehearsal by far was the group practice for the ice dance program. Karen Chen stood in for Ashley Wagner as Nathan's partner, and she wasn't well-versed in the steps as you can see in this video. 😂'

'Nathan doesn't have to jump to provide an entertaining performance, but he still graced us with a beautiful quad in his "Back From the Edge" program. He's so quick on his feet and can really dance on the ice. I love how he throws himself into every step.'

'The second half started with another fantastic group number. This one set to "Shape of You" featured Meryl and Charlie, Madison Hubbell and Zach Donohue, and Ashley and Nathan. It was ice dance-themed, so I watched Ashley and Nathan for most of it to see how they would fare. They more than held their own! I love seeing skaters out of their element, so it was a treat to watch Ashley and Nathan dance in hold together.'

also from FSU:

post from someone who attended the Salt Lake City show:

'It was really Nathan's night. The City made it Nathan Chen Day https://twitter.com/USFigureSkating/status/997156004625354753 It was clear he was in his home town and happy to be there. The cheers were very loud and the standing ovation after Nemesis was well deserved. I was lucky enough to see Nemesis for the first time in competition at the "Classic" last September and was very happy to see it as a full on tour de force for this show. (I couldn't help but hear Shae Lyn in my mind saying "Now that's the way it should look".) Loved it.'

someone responded: That is so great! I'm guessing his teachers at the Ballet West Academy are kvelling for him :)

from someone who attended yesterday's show in Portland:

Nathan Chen's appeal spanned all demographics, and he skated like he was giving 200%. It seemed to be more of a mixed crowd than in the past, with more dating couples in their '20's and '30's, and not just us old ladies, and lots of people of all ages from the Asian-American community.

This really made me laugh. Poor Mikhail struggling to understand Nathan's fast talk! I wanted to tell him, "Don't worry - sometimes I have a hard time understanding him too." At that one press conference where someone asked him if he was going to work on the 4A, I think I had to play the answer something like 5 times before I could understand him. His mind must just be racing!

haha yes - sometimes I can hardly understand Nathan :)

Re: OR news clip Love how Nathan stands in the rink like a boss! Coach Chen as a side gig in the future?

On Karen's IG story she says Nathan wasn't even supposed to be there but just offered to tag along and help. :sarcasm:

It must be fun interacting with all these kids, I can picture him doing Nike+Nathan Slay kid camps in his future.

Update: Kristi Yamaguchi was there in March.
