Nathan Chen

Nathan made a small appearance on a Today show segment to promote the Olympics.

Ode to the newborn (quad) King from John Wilson

Semenko, who is enrolled in medical university, mentioned speaking to Nathan at WTT about combining skating with study.
By the way at the World Team Trophy I talked with Nathan about study in medicine university, even before I entered the university. Asked him how is it like.

Weirdly Mozart is my favorite lp this quad even though a lot of people complain about the music cuts. I definitely prefer it to Rocketman for the Olympics. However, if this means he has ditched 6 quad layout and going for 5 I can accept that. I adore La Boheme. I think it’s under-rated compared to Rocketman.

The Eternity/Nemesis mashup never really worked for me because the Nemesis section didn't match the step sequence the way the original music did. I think he was trying to be too cute by creating a sort of Nemesis Redemption without first finding suitable music selections.

I actually did like the Mozart program a lot and thought it just needed a little tweaking to make it great, much like what they did to the Glass program. I have heard that he was still working on the program but dropped it after he stopped practicing the 4Lo, which suggests that the program's conception was tied to his success with that jump.

For me, Eternity and Nemesis just weren’t complimentary music selections, even though same artist. I actually like the Mozart program, but combined with the heavy Eternity/Nemesis SP, it gave a far too dark overall impression. The fact that Nathan seems to be experimenting with other programs and still appears to be undecided on what he might do (possibly one set of programs for Nationals and another for the Olympics?) is unique. I don’t think I’ve heard of other skaters expressing such a plan at this point in the season. Maybe it relaxes him a bit to not tie himself to certain programs, but, to tell the truth, I have no real clue. I guess it’s just wait and see again.

One thing that I've learned from being a Nathan fan is to never take what he says at face value. I don't think there's any chance he will switch again before the Olympics.

Nemesis SP is "BAD LUCK" for Nathan. Whenever Nathan skates to this music, he falls. I don't care the music cut is different, Nemesis SP should be GONE. It's not about redemption, it's about WINNING. So glad he is skating back to his old programs . Rocketman is the best MAN FREE PROGRAM ever. Nobody including Jason, Vincent and Hanyu gives me goose bump as much as Nathan's rocketman performance.

I also really liked the Mozart program - I think it could be great with some more time and tweaking. But I think going back to Rocketman is honestly a great idea. Outside of a small sphere of folks on twitter, Rocketman isn't divisive like Mozart is, it's a crowd favorite, and even though his performance of it at the GPF was incredible, it never had an outing at worlds and wasn't even fully clean - despite it winning a world record. I think if his technical prowess is anywhere near what it was for Phillip Glass last year with Rocketman at the Olys, he'll be heavily rewarded by both the judges and the audience.

Though of course I might be a little biased, since I think Rocketman is one of the most well constructed free programs he's ever had. The moments where he jumps on the music, or during a pause in the music? Amazing.

Sorry, I disagree. Where he fell wasn't even Nemesis, and it's certainly not true at all that whenever he skates to Nemesis, he falls. Did you forget his very first world championship title? That was with Nemesis. And he has skated to it in ice shows without a hitch. He also fell at World's earlier this year on the very same 4Lz jump in his SP and that was NOT Nemesis. If you want to argue his SP and LP together is too much dreariness then, fine, but I don't buy this "Nemesis = bad luck, he needs to stay away!" argument.

Also, just to clarify, can someone remind me how was his performance with Rocketman at the 2019 GPF wasn't fully clean? Have I forgotten something? I mean, my jaw was on the floor at the time because I thought it was just that perfect.

He was "clean" but only had a level 3 on the StSq and changed the 3F to 3S in the 3 jump combo.

Ah, okay. I didn't notice his StSq was a level 3 and I didn't realize the planned jump in that combo was actually a 3F. Thanks.

There was also a minor mistake in the ChSq1 (he stumbled but it was hardly noticeable).

I wonder if Nathan would work with Sam and MFD (or with Shae?) on refining elements of RocketMan if he decides to keep it for his Olympic FS - I have a pretty good feeling he'll shake up and upgrade his layout - although I wish he wouldn't replace the 4F3T as it matches perfectly with the music. And, he might still do the 4Lo - we never know! He could pretty much do this -

GPF Layout: 4F3T 4Lz 4T1eu3S 3A 4S 4T 3Lz3T
Possible Nats and Olympic Layout: 4F3T 4Lo 4Lz 3A 4T1eu3F 4S 4T

okay guys, this is just for kicks and giggles knowing that we're probably going to get the same type of costume (if not the exact same) that Nathan typically rocks in competitions. if you had a seat on the table with Vera Wang in selecting what Nathan should wear for both short and long programs - what would you pick (pics welcome).

For Rocketman, I would want Nathan in a costume much like his Caravan penguin suit except that the top would be purple and instead of the white in the middle it would be detailing in black, pink and sparkles like Elton John's collar here.

I expect changes to jump layout and choreography in addition to dropping the 4Lo.

I think the step sequence of Rocketman needs some work to be presented in the Olympics. There may be something about him feeling more comfortable performing in Rocketman than Mozart which I could understand. But if Rocketman has always been the backup plan, why use it for the gala last season? Nathan has always praised about his team and how they support him but there are things I do not understand e.g. not going to a trial event before SA.

I think it was always Nathan’s intent to do new programs. Never thought Rocketman was a backup plan. Early in the summer he was asking for ideas for programs on Instagram. Though he may have written that jokingly, it could have been an indication that he was struggling with what he really wanted to do. I think it was only after SA or SCI that he and his team started looking at prior programs.

I have always loved La Boheme. He interprets it beautifully - and I think he was feeling it even more at the Nationals Send-Off. Rocketman wasn’t my favorite initially, but it has grown on me over time. I just want him to be comfortable and skate to something he really enjoys. That’s half the battle.

The story goes that Nathan wanted to skate to Mozart in 2018 but was overruled by Lori and Mom so this was not something his team came up with out of the blue. My guess is that it was supposed to be his "ideal" program and that his goal was to skate it with 6 quads. But the 4Lo never gelled for him and I suspect that may be why he decided to drop the program in the end. I do wonder if the reason he skipped the warmup events was to spend more time working on that jump.

The thing with Nathan is that you never know exactly what really happened or what he was thinking as compared to someone like Shoma lol
Anyway, I’m hoping for successful showings with both programs at Nationals. Thought I would never see La Boheme again here is another chance:)
