Nathan Chen

Phil's article on The Rivalry.

Team USA skaters answer skating questions. Nathan tells us how often he changes boots.

Apparently, in the first couple of days, Nathan’s SP and FS music was played multiple times during the training sessions. From what I’ve seen at other competitions, I believe a skater’s music typically is played only once. Is it different for the Olympics or is it just because there were so few skaters present in the first couple of days that Nathan was allowed to do so? And so many run throughs with so many quads (though he seemed to take it slightly easier today). Worried about his injury - don’t know if it’s still bothering him. So impressive that he wears an N95 mask while doing all that he does though.

I think it's normal for Nathan to do 2 FS run-throughs per session when he peaks. I remember reading an interview with Sergei Rozanov in Russian media where he mentioned that Nathan did 2 FS run-throughs per session in Stockholm. I think Michal Brezina said something similar. The context of the Brezina article was that he is older than Nathan and doesn't do the same number of run-throughs as Nathan.

The music rotation starts Feb 1st (today) where skaters are divided into the 5 practice groups for the official practices. Prior to Feb 1st, practice groups were just A/B and the last few days A/B/C and not everyone had arrived so there would have been fewer skaters on the ice per session. I think Nathan, Michal and Boyang were the only men on the ice on Saturday (Vincent was probably still recovering from the jet lag).

Not a bad practice: Nathan Chen's runthru just now: 4F3T, 4F, 4S, 4Lz, 2T1Eu3F, 3A, 3Lz3T

https://twitter.com/rockerskating/status/1488844971599974404

Seems a little he's doing ok, besides the fall on the 4T:

Practice notes Chen: 4T(fall), 4T, 3A, 3Lz, 4Lz, 4F, runthru (4F3T, 4F, 4S, 4Lz, 2T1Eu3F, 3A, 3Lz3T), 4T1Eu1F, 4F1Eu3F, 4Lz, 4T(hangs on), 4S, 4Lz3T, 4T1Eu3F, 3A, 4T1Eu3F, 3A, 4Lz, 4T1Eu3F, 4T1Eu3F, 3A, 3Lz3T, 4F, 4S

With that first ever 4F1Eu3F, the potential of a 6 quad FS is there (if needed):

4F3T, 4Lo, 4S, 4Lz, 4Feu3F, 3A, 4T3T

I suspect that 4F1Eu3F may be a typo, but who knows?

There's been such a deluge of Nathan news and articles coming out every day it's been so hard to keep up!

Footage of his morning practice.

Nathan has been named an Omega watch ambassador! The article says he's in the 1 minute commercial but I didn't notice him.

he hasn't tried 4Lo in a while - so let's not even put in the universe that he'll do it at this point. as much as I love seeing that, I would much prefer having a very clean and well executed 5-quad program.

Seems to have a little flip issues:

Practice notes Chen: 3F, 3Lz, 3A, 3A, 3Lz, runthru (2F, 3A, 4Lz3T), 4F, 2F, 2F, 4F(fall), 4F(turn), 4F, 3Lz, 4Lz3T, 4T1Eu3F, 4T1Eu3F, 2S, 4S, 2S, 4S, 3A, 3A, 3F, 3F, 3Lz, 3Lz http://bit.ly/3gbBOZ9 #Beijing2022

But sounds like Nathan isn’t alone today:

So many popped quads this morning in basically every practice session
