Nathan Chen

Phil Hersh's article was recently updated with what I believe are new quotes from Scott Hamilton and Hayes Jenkens.

Nathan's program was finally unblocked on the Olympics Youtube Channel https://youtu.be/Y_POCB-oVgE
Thank you for those links! I am glad the Olympics Channel put the full LP of Nathan's from Beijing. The NBC upload edited out the Raf hug which I found offputting. The Raf hug was celebrating the LP! Can't edit something important like that out NBC!

The GPI Olympians gave a panel discussion today and Nathan talked about competing at Worlds in 3 weeks.

His fan Levi was also in attendance

I cannot believe Nathan visited for a segment on tonight's Watch What Happens Live on Bravo - two of my absolute favorites. I can die and go to heaven now.

Where did you get the information that he will go to the Worlds?
There was a link to twitter thread a few posts up. It included an exempt from an interview. But it looks like it's deleted now. Maybe I got overly excited by a fake news.

I watched the interview with Nathan and for Nathan fans that was not a confirmation. He implied he was going to Worlds but he could have easily been talking hypothetically--as in this is how athletes do the turn around from the Olympics to Worlds (like he did in 2018). Nathan is great at keeping people guessing so until I see true confirmation I'm not believing it.

Most of us know this is coming and it’s in his best of interest to do so. He already gave us plenty of joy. I sometimes I feel I am too spoiled with this level of consistency, quality and variety of performances to the extent it is so hard to get invested in another skater. I totally agree on the transitioning part. We saw so many elite athletes struggling with that. I’m really happy he has things that he is truly passionate and excited about outside of skating. As for his future competitive career, only time will tell but I trust him to make the right decision.
I am invested in other skaters (hi Jimmy Ma) but they don't have the consistency. None of them do. I'm always so relaxed watching Nathan. I know he'll do well.

He doesn’t mention Worlds at all in his interviews. But if these interviews continue who knows? He might just decide to go to Worlds to get away from the press! Mostly joking, I think it’s looking doubtful he’ll go.
We should all know by now he's not going to tell us anything. I think he loves keeping us guessing.

I love watching many other skaters too. Jimmy is so fun to watch. For me it comes down to the level of expectation I have for each of them. TBH I have been pretty nervous watching Nathan compete the last two seasons. Really hope I could just enjoy his skating without worrying about the results if he ever competes again.

Nice roundup article including a few interesting quotes.
"I know how much he wanted to be able to coach an Olympic gold medalist and he hadn't been able to do that," Chen said. "So it really means the world to be able to be a part of that with him. He's certainly been the reason why I'm able to do what I'm able to do."

The gruff coach became emotional talking about his star pupil and what they have achieved together.

"I am emotional, because I started work in 1976," Arutunian said. "And I was like walking through the swamp to this time. And it was hard, I was like almost dying in the middle of this journey and I made it. And now I'm happy, just emotional, I made it. You understand what I mean? I made it.
"But I think coming into this, in my mind I did not feel that I was the favorite to win," Chen said. "As soon as you hear the name Yuzuru Hanyu, you're like, 'OK, this competition is going to be hard.'"

He also knew in addition to the two-time Olympic gold medalist, his Japanese teammates Yuma Kagiyama (2021 World silver medalist) and Shoma Uno (2018 Olympic silver medalist) were also contenders.

"The rest of the field is super deep as well, so you can't really count out anyone," Chen said.
While Chen said he gets nervous before every competition, he tried to keep the butterflies at bay by tossing a football with Bell as he waited to go out on the ice.

She knew he was going to win the gold medal "before he started, honestly," she said. "I really was so confident in what he could do. I was talking to him before and he seemed so cool and he's so trained. Anything can happen, obviously, but I was like, 'I felt really good about it.'"

After his return to the US Nathan was interviewed for the Anaheim Ducks. They do appear to think he's headed to Worlds.
Chen now sets his sights on capturing his fourth world championship next month in France.

Fun video recap of the panel discussion

Thinking about Nathan's personality and why he would even care about earning another world title, I think these are some possible reasons for him.

1. He's already done the work, and feels confident in his skills. Why not take advantage of being able to actually perform to a crowd?
2. Coming from a poorer family background, struggling to make ends meet your whole life, the payout from a World Championships win, while not HUGE, is still SUBSTANTIAL.
3. Nathan doesn't LOVE being in the media spotlight. He's already made some appearances, he isn't like Adam, who wanted to become a part of pop-culture. Why force himself to be something that doesn't fit his personality?
4. Some of his best friends are going to Worlds (Hawayak and Baker, Mariah). Who wouldn't want to take the opportunity to travel to France with your best friends, especially when travel is such a rare things these days?
5. Nathan's a perfectionist. He probably is still annoyed for popping his triple flip at the Olympics, so if he has a chance to remedy that, and end with an even better performance, why not?

All that to say, I'm excited to see him compete one more time, with the caveat of if World's will still be able to go on as planned considering the state of the world.
