NBC said to be in deal to air '09 worlds

Excellent idea. Since the 2008 Worlds will be in Europe there is no feasible way any Network can show the competitions LIVE. So placing both parts of the competition on one tape for a later showing would work just fine, and for the American viewing, the Network can show it on a day and time which is most lucrative to it. (However, I do not see ABC/ESPN doing this for 2008.) Maybe in 2010 if there will be an interested Network.
One question. I wonder how many fans of the TV showing before any results are known, are still in that frame of mind? We have so much lively discussion with reports of results now together with youtube showings before the TV showings. And after the TV showing there is not that much discussion as in previous yeaars. Just wondering.

Well, I am one of those that will peruse the boards and try to find any youtube video if possible, but I still would love to see it on TV (the quality of the videos in YouTube is not that great). But for me everything is closing now. I thought ice network also broadcasted international competitions, but from what I've read here they don't do that yet, is that correct? So if everything goes to NBC, the only thing I'll have is Youtube.
Now if someone started using bittorrent to download competitions, that would be great hehehe

^ Not sure of Icenetwork's plans to go international in actual shooting of competitions. They do carry international stories of skaters. It's a business and will not last if it does not make money.

What a pity!I do like ESPN version.
What would be ideal is if NBC picked up broadcast rights for 2009 Worlds and showed their cursory two hours of primetime coverage on NBC for the many people who watch skating if it's on, but don't follow it obsessively like those of us on the boards (and I'm still convinced that us board users/advanced results getters/YouTube watchers are a small minority of people who watch skating), and shoved a massive number of hours of live or tape-delayed (as appropriate) coverage onto their affiliated networks, particularly Bravo (I actually think figure skating and Bravo are a great fit!). I realize, however, that this is probably just a dream.
It actually makes perfect sense to me that NBC is trying to actively drum up interest in the premier sport of the Winter Olympics, because viewership in 2006 was different -- and down (from 2002 in SLC which isn't hard, since there were so many things -- location, patriotic fervor, etc. -- that contributed to sky-high ratings) -- from what they had experienced in the past. NBC Sports like to tell stories, and they are trying to start writing their stories for Olympic figure skating early. This is especially true since they are going without a major star for the first time in several Olympics. I suspect that they are hoping, in the alternative, for a major story.
I truly believe that in-depth coverage of figure skating is increasingly going to be an internet-only venture. I know that sucks for a lot of reasons, but I hope those kinks are eventually worked out! I'm personally okay with that, because it gives me greater opportunity to see more younger, lower-level skaters than I would with any television coverage.
I actually think it will interesting to see what happens with and who picks up Olympic coverage after NBC's contract with the IOC is up in 2012.

Toepick - If the 2009 Worlds produces an American winner,it may well produce a huge interest in the Olympics. But think about the Amercian 'best' right now! Do you see anyone winning over: Mao Asada? Daisuke Takahashi? Savenchko/Szolkowy? Domnina/Shabalan?
Maybe Belbin/Agosto will medal but not likely gold.
Johnny Fans, be rational. He will medal if and only if Verner, Lambiel, Joubert falter.
Meissner or Wagner - long shots for a medal, if YuNa is healthy and Costner does not choke.
Mistakes must happen to Pang/Tong; Zhang/Zhang for Castile/Okolski to medal.
There is more of a chance that Japan will win two gold medals in this Worlds.
I aplaud NBC for taking on this Worlds albeit it's abridged version. I'm sure they will be looking for a poster skater(s). If none, i see little hope for huge ratings at 2010 Olys.
