Negative Article Re: Kwan in Houston Paper

There have been negative and postive articles. Some reporters get what went into the process of conditionally placing Michelle on the team. Some just are clueless and I don't bother reading them.
 
Wow, this is some of the worst journalism I've come across lately. The chronicle is a sister paper to the express-news, I think I'll drop him a line. Its not even acurate.
 
I can't help wondering what these anti-Kwan writers were doing when Todd and Meno & Sand got their respective medical byes, without getting whacked by a criminal?
 
Seriously, what do atricles like this prove. Now Joe, that's debasing a skater! Thank the skating gods that the writers of these articles are not judges. I think that articles like that only make the skaters stronger and want to go out on the ice and kick -ss and say now take that.:)
 
It's just a writer's opinion! My god. Tell me this isn't MKF...

ETA: Like a poster said above, there have been both positive and negative articles. Not everyone is going to react positively to the news on kwan. Personally, I think it's good to hear "both sides of the story". but that's JMO. It's not even that bad! I've seen worse written on other sports. FS fans really should lighten up a bit.

It's such poor journalism, it's funny. Even leaving aside Kwan (I don't think even her fiercest critics would say she was included on the team because she looks cute in Vera Want), they imply it was "sleazy" to send Nancy to the Olympics in '98. Hmmm, so I guess sports is not about sending someone who is the best. "Fair" is such a difficult concept. Pretending like everyone is identical does not make anything "fair".
 
it sounds like the sportswriter doesn't even know football, let alone figure skating. Someone needs to remind him, there are 11 people on a football team when they're on the field, not just a quarterback,
 
OK the "this isn't MKF" is not fair. Kwan supposedly has more fans than other skaters....frankly I have no idea if there are more or if they are just louder, LOL. If she does have more fans then it is logical that wherever FS is being discussed there would be more Kwan fans offering their opinions. Unless GS has a "Kwan Quota" there is nothing wrong with this. I think it is unfair that Kwaniacs are supposed to not express their feelings just because nonKwans and antiKwans don't want to hear them. This thread offers equal opportunity for those who agree with the article to say so. I think if you go back and read the replies they are not so much proKwan as anti bad journalism. This forum would be a very quiet place without the Kwaniacs.
 
Ptichka is right. It is just bad journalism, and what's more it sells newspapers which is important to the publishing czars.

I'm not sure if this is an editorial peice. The main "rule" of journalism is to be fair, accurate, and to present the news is a straight forward, unopinionated way. This article is innacurate and presenting a slant - and that's putting it nicely. I would suggest, if you would like to write to the paper about this article, write the editor. However, if this is an editorial, it's the writers opinions, which are fine.
 
Michelle does not belong just to the MK Forum. She belongs to the whole world. Therefore, it is the responsibilty -- nay, the duty -- of all of us to rise as one to her defense. :yes:
 
OMG...Mathman, you have to STOP with these hilarious comments or I'll just have to buy a keyboard and computer screen manufacturer !!!

What I can't understand is why people who follow skating, who *saw* the way Michelle skated at Marshalls -- before she was even injured again -- aren't more concerned about how she's doing/will do. [Or perhaps that's why there's such defensiveness over the bye?]

But if she's not up to par, I hope the satire isn't correct [ "Marvelous, Shelly. Just marvelous. See ya in Turin"]. I hope whoever is judging her does take it seriously, and doesn't rubber stamp her.
 
NorthernLite, I saw Marshalls live (not on TV), and I am concerned about Michelle's skating. However, I do not believe that the placement she is likely to get in Turin would be lower than one Hughes would be likely to get. Emily is a lovely skater, but she did not come anywhere near medaling at either of her GP events; neither does she have too much senior level international experience. May be it sounds callous, but basically the federation is not taking any risks by not sending Emily to Turin.

But making the Olympic team is not a reward for skating at U.S. Nationals except for the National champion. Heck if the Olympics were a reward Kwan would have more than earned a lifetime bye. It's not like she wasn't there by choice. She was injured and that's why we have the bye clause... in case those expected to be the best cannot compete at Nationals. The way she skated at Marshalls was not surprising after being off of the ice for a long while and with almost no training time. It was a cheesefest not the Olympic trials. How many times does Kwan have to say that she will take herself out if she is not up to form? The reason there is such defensiveness is because a bye is SOP for the USFSOC whenever someone is injured and there was not this uproar when others have received one. Kerrigan is mentioned like she was more deserving of her bye than Kwan. They were both injured and neither is at fault for their injuries. The rules don't say that you must be attacked by a psycho to receive a medical bye.
 
Well, I can't see Michelle being a medal threat or anything, and I do feel badly for Hughes. I am torn on this because I don't think it is fair to let Michelle Kwan go since she hasn't shown herself in so long and her performance at Worlds was not top-notch, However, that being said, I do think the USFSA has to do what they think best, and I do think that, in the case that both if Kwan and Hughes were at the next Olympics, Kwan would still place higher than Hughes.

I like Piel's analogy better. If your best player is injured during the regular season, you still want to activate her for the playoffs if she's ready to go.

BTW, if you want to email the writer, just click on his email address at the bottom of the article. Pro or con, columnists LOVE to get lots of resposes to their work. It shows someone is reading it.
