New ISU skating event announced for next year

Call me intrigued. It sounds interesting. I hope that countries' top-tier skaters can be rallied to compete in yet another event after Worlds. I'm sure the prize money will help.

I would like to eventually see the event open to more than just the top 6 countries though (and how will "top 6" be determined?), since I doubt the "top 6" countries in skating will change drastically in the future (though I would like to see more skaters

Just off the top of my head, I'd imagine the top 6 now are "classic" top 3 of the U.S., Canada, Russia and three of Japan/China/Germany/France/Italy (again, depending on what criterion are used for being on "top."

Also, I wonder if the ISU will use it's Grand Prix age rule or its Championship age rule. It could make a heck of a lot of difference some years -- such as this year, if such an event were held (I understand that this even will commence next year, I'm simply throwing this year out as an example, another would be 2005-06).

I'm definitely eager to see how this develops and how it plays out.

From the website title that popped up, "Slam," I was expecting something more along the lines of Evan's extreme sports idea!

Any new event is good but this one seems oddly nation-oriented. Many nations are not strong in all the disciplines. It might not be so much fun to watch China's efforts in dance or Japan's in pairs or France's in women or pairs.

The prize money is huge! I wonder who put it up. (Bill Gates? Michelle Kwan? Johnny Depp?) Hurray for the skaters!

I don't like the idea, too much nation oriented! There is already too much nationalism in FS.
A better idea will be to create mixed teams ad hoc with the best skaters. Let say
Team A (Zhang-Asada-Buttle-Takahashi-Pang/Tong-Domnina/Shabalin) vs
Team B (Yu Na-Kostner-Lambiel-Weir-Savchenko/Szolkovy-Virtue/Moir)

ITA on nationalism.

Prefer just best skaters/Teams from wherever. It wil keep the claques quiet.

I wonder if this is intended to replace the USA versus Japan challenge series.

Seriously, what six countries can field competitive teams in all four disciplines?

As for the money, I would guess it was put up by some commercial sponsor in Japan.

Since it's in Japan, and money is coming from there, it's odd that the Japanese would include a pair and an ice dance couple.

Currently, they have no senior pair, and the Reeds are no great shakes in ice dance.

Where are the Japanese going to get a senior pair? Are they going to try to lure Kawaguchi Smirnov? She's still a Japanese citizen.

In fact, for a competition of this sort, there is no reason the US juniors could not compete right now.

Canadian SOI

Sounds interesting BUT........
That time frame could cut into the Canadian SOI that is held after World's each year. I am willing to bet the Canadian skaters have long term deals with SOI. At least Buttle and Rochette. I am guessing Chan will also be guesting on part of the tour.

I'm all for it!

I'm for a team competition, but not with national teams. The results will be very predictable (Canada vs USA). A lot of excellent skaters will be excluded (such as Yu Na and Lambiel).
With mixed teams, the competition will be much more interesting and unpredictable. But ISU and Speedy Ottavio 50 (Cinquanta) cannot see further than his nose.
