Not So Early Predictions

I must say there are a few impressive Novice and junior skaters coming up the ranks. I would hope the future of our ladies event doesn't sit in Mira's hands - that is a scary thought indeed !!!!

To be fair, Mira is only 18 years old. She still could develope considerably.

By the way, happy birthday Joannie.

I AGREE...............she may surprise us all. She seems to have the right mental focus which has often been the bane of many Canadian female skaters. However, she needs to develop her artistry and her jump style does not help. It makes me dizzy every time I see her looking up before a jump.:eek: She has to quit cheating jumps and incrase speed. She is young enough to do those things but I have not seen much change in the last 3 years in those areas so.................:cool:

She needs to do something different after this year because her current regime does not seem to be resulting in the improvements she needs............:scratch::ohwell::ohwell::frown2:

Lenko/Islam also withdrew from the JGPF because of the asthma.

This must be difficult to take for her partner too as it is not a skating related physical constraint to competition. It seems like asthma should be manageable but I am completely unfamiliar with this challenging physical ailment.

It seems risky skating all year with someone that could so easily have to drop out of the major competitions..............................

The stress of competition can make an autoimmune disorder such as asthma worse. L/I did fine in their JGP events last season and this season as well. It seems as if the major events (JGPF, Worlds and now Nationals) raise the stress level too high.

Irina Slutskaya has a different autoimmune disorder, and the stress of competition really affected her. She was fine in the early season, but for the big events in 2005-2006 (GPF and Olympics), she wasn't able to compete at her usual high level. Travel bothered her, too; she was able to skate her best at Worlds 2005 because it was held her in hometown, Moscow.

I agree with you winterpeg and I am going to play Chuckm today.

Yes, I must admit that she appears to train hard and has harder jumps (flips and lutz) that very few Canadian lady skaters have. We've seen our share of Canadian ladies with natural born talent and no work ethics going nowhere.

What is hurting her are
1) Slow entry to her jumps, which causes her to lose momentum and thus full rotations.

2) Turtle head: This is just as bad as Nakano's leg wrap. She always puts her head up, especially in her entry to flips and lutz and her doughnut spins. In her spins, you can see her torso not quite perpendicular to the skating leg. She still manages to grab her free leg, but her head is still up like a turtle. I get the feeling that the judges pick on this habit and reflect on the marks.

3) She might not be young enough to fix her problems. Even younger skaters like Mao are having a hard time fixing her flutz. Besides, she hasn't made a huge progress in the past 3 years in her technical content - no noticeable increase in her speed, slow entry to jumps, cheated, messy landing in her jumps, turtle head.

With Joannie and Myriane Samson, when they are on (50% of time for Joannie, 10% for Myriane), their entry and exit to jumps are clean, fast enough and smooth.

fumie_fumie .... you may be playing chuckm, but somehow it wasn't offensive at all. I agree with what you are saying about Mira - loved the "turtle head" comments. It has always annoyed me, now it has a name - lol !!!

Mira's technical Achilles heel is her 2A, which is frequently downgraded for underrotation. Because the 2A is a SP requirement, this often means a low score for Mira and a poor placement going into the FS at Worlds.

Mira really, really needs to fix her 2A!

I agree, it must be so hard for him, and for her as well, knowing that she may have to miss more competitions in the future because of this. Stress likely makes it worse for her. I do hope she can get it under controll. From what I know of thius team, they've been together since they were young kids, and they seem to be a perfect match toghether. I hope this doesn't end her career and send him looking for another partner.

Huh? She has improved immensely. How can you not notice? I mean, her improvements happened only just this year, but still. (BTW, I wonder whether she read some of the comments on this site). I think if there is one big surprise at nationals its this: Mira 1st, Joannie 2nd. What a HUGE upset that would be!

You're right, I was perhaps a bit harsh in saying no improvement. I agree it would be a huge upset but it is within the realm of possibilities

I think this is a pivotal year for Mira (though I don't want to jinx anything). We have seen a much more sophisticated and polished look appearance-wise, a new sophisticated style evidenced by choice of music and improvements in poise and carriage and more attention to details, and obvious improvements with speed, edges, and flow. Most importantly, we have seen a change in attitude for the first time in 18 years! And that is why we see all the improvements. :) Do I think she is going to be on the World podium? No, because she is not nearly as talented as Yu Na nor Mao nor Caroline Zhang. However, she definitely has the potential to overcome Joannie at nationals whether it be this year or the next couple of years assuming Joannie is still at nationals, too.

turtle-head:rofl: wow you nailed that on the head. Its always bugged me and now its perfectly named.

I laughed when you mentioned the slow entry into jumps because my boyfriend says the same thing everytime she is about to jump,"why is she slowing down?!" so I heard him saying it as I read it from you. Thanks for the laugh:laugh:

I hope the upcoming novice & junior skaters really keep it together and dont go into the downward spiral as we've seen many do. We may have to make Joannie skate until she is old and grey if it keeps up:laugh:

Although I admit that Mira made a huge improvement this year, I'm already tired of seeing her make the worlds team. This year, I really hope Lesley Hawker takes the silver. Joannie will take the gold of course:love:

Though I'm not Canadian, Joannie is one of my favorite skaters. I willl be pleased and delighted if she wins. I just think this may be Mira's time to show us all what she can do.

Wouldn't it be a surprise if she ended up on the podium in Sweden, Ay? Aye? Eh? Ehe? Hay? Ey? ( Sorry folks, I never learned to spell that. )

I hope Mira can close the gap between Joannie and herself. Joannie is a way too strong for Mira to overcome. She is very athletic and technically sound. She doesn't have any of the problems that have plagued Mira over the past years- under-rotated, cheated jumps.

"eh?" is the standard spelling in Canada. I don't know about the rest of Canada, but in Eastern Ontario, you hear that word in pretty much every, single sentence.

I have noticed that. Not only is Joannie strong, but she is actually muscular. It's like she works out with weights. Comentators have mentioned this. I had read an article, which I can't find right now, that she was attempting to lose some of her muscularity.

That is very difficult to lose since she is using those muscles for skating.

Although I think she looks fine, my boyfriend agrees that she looks too muscular. Im fine with her trying to lose some of it as long as it doesnt affect her skating. That would be a serious mistake. Best of luck to her at Nationals!!:rock:

Funny, I never noticed or thought of Joannie as being too muscular.........certainly no more so than Emily Hughes?

Like I said I didnt notice it either, but he says her arms are too muscular, which NOW I can kinda see. He says its that and how angular her face is, is what makes her look too muscular. You cover up her arms and you cant tell at all. I dont think she even needs to worry about that. She just needs to stay healthy and happy and win some events:rock::clap:
