Olympic Champion Skater Jamie Sale Flaunts Her Figure in January 2004 FHM

Jamie Sale can do whatever she wants with her body, including posing naked or semi-naked or whatever. It's her decision and I certainly don't lose respect for someone over something as shallow as this. She does invite to comment though otherwise she wouldn't have posed for pics that would show in a magazine. That's what she wanted, to have people talking, IMO, and she's doing it, LOL

I don't have anything against nude pictures and I don't understand what does that have to do with role models? Telling teenagers to walk down the streets naked? Is nudity the big problem here? Wow, you'd better watch out next time your kids go to a museum. With all the nudity they can find in those paintings, sculptures... amazing how some call it 'art',uh?

That said, the pictures are just BAD. They look cheap, so not classy and IMHO that doesn't make her look sexy, which was what was supposed to look like, I believe. Wasn't there a photographer that could have done a better job?

I agree with RIskatingfan - the pictures don't offend me, they're just cheap and tacky looking. I don't care that she's nekkid, or almost nekkid, or kinda sorta not quite nekkid. I do feel sad that there are lots of strong women who think that doing these types of pictures are a way to prove something - to themselves, to someone else, who knows.

I have the infamous Katarina Playboy magazine, and in the article (yes there's an article and I read it ;) ), Katarine says something to the effect of "many of my fans will question why I am doing this, and all I can tell them is that it was time" - that statement makes it sound like a woman with 2 Olympic gold medals hasn't really arrived until she's posed for Playboy. The photos were definitely arty and very different than typical Playboy photos - but submitting those pictures in Playboy rather undermined the purpose that Kat herself said was behind the pictoral.

Anyway, I don't mean to go OT here.... I just find it a much more complicated issue than simply naked = bad v. naked is great! I support Jamie's or anyone's right to do what they want with their bodies, with their career - but I hate that dorky "sexy" (NOT!) pics in magazines geared toward drooling idiots is even considered a career move for women.

Of course, as I mentioned, I do have the Kat Witt Playboy. Somehow I just haven't made myself throw it away. (Though right now I don't even know where it is)

so her butt was supposedly covered... I'm so "impressed" by her issues of modesty... maybe I'll go to class tonight with just my white undies on...

Go for it!! :D  Can't admit you were wrong, can you? I was simply pointing out that Jamie was NOT naked like you stated.

Now this I agree with in regards to these types of photos, but it's still not my place to judge someone for doing them. I still adore Jamie and always will.

There are some who believe that people should conduct themselves in a modest way. Which means not knowingly exposing certain body parts, underwear, or what may appear to be underwear in public. Also, wearing swimwear in non pool/beach enviroments. Some people feel strongly about these issues. Is it everyone's cup of tea? No, but on a board such as this one I don't think that is necessary to put down, ridicule, or make snide comments to those who post more conservative opinions. IMO skaters are public figures and have put themselves out there open for discussion both positive and negative. That's what these boards are for. If a public figure isn't thick skinned enough to hear comments that are going to be made when they put themselves in certain situations then maybe they should be more careful of what they do. It's a little pompous for anyone to think that they can do something that they KNOW will be controversial and the percentage of the population who disagrees with them will not comment on it out of some sense of loyalty. I have much more respect for someone who feels that it is more important to be true to their own beliefs than to compromise them for the sake of going along with what's popular or trendy.
OTOH all posters here are peers in a way and I think that we should all try to be a little kinder to each other. It seems that some posters get all bent out of shape if something negative is said about a skater, who they probably don't even know but have no problem saying worse things to a fellow poster who they at least have a relationship of corresponding with through posting on this board.

Well said as usual, Piel.

I think that's what they call "skater's butt," LOL. If you think about it, even a tiny girl like Sasha has to have somethig back there to power those strokes.

When Michelle was in People magazine a couple of years ago as one of the 50 most beautiful people on the planet, they asked her if there was anything she would change about her appearance. That was one of the things she mentioned, and the other was that she wished she were taller, like her sister.

OT - BTW, I think Michelle is really lucky to have a big sister, Karen, who is such a good mentor, friend and guide. (And who would never let Michelle pose for any questionable pictures, LOL.)

PS. This post is not intended to start a fight between Sasha fans and Michelle fans about who has the cutest deriere.

Well, do you think THEY can put others down; ridicule or make snide comments about people, who do things they don't agree with/can't stand/etc.? Because neither you or those, who got all bent out of shape about my posts, seemed to mind when those with conservative opinions were doing all those things. Is "conservative" the key word here?

If you meant me, and I'm quite sure you did; all I did was oppose to putting others down in order to express an opinion (the same thing you did, sans separating opinions in conservative and liberal). I stated that very clearly in my posts (to no avail, as it seems). I don't care if someone is pro or con to what Jamie did. But I think there are enough words and phrases in the English language to express our opinions (whatever they might be) without putting others down.

Having said that, maybe I am too sensitive (I've really thought about it, believe it or not). Maybe none of us should hold back when expressing our opinions (not only those with conservative ones, sorry), and use whatever words and phrases we feel like it. Imagine those fascinating dialogues: "she dressed sleazily and posed for sleazy photos, how disgusting and low of her" - "how idiotic of you to say that." Etc. IMO such "discussions" would have no real value, and would very quickly turn into ugly wars (and that's why we have those guidelines, I believe -- not because we are such delicate flowers that can't deal with strong language), but this is not a debate club, after all.

That picture of Jamie is just terrible (the one with her squatting with her back to the camera.)
I agree. And the rest of them are not much better. They should've asked me to take them.

99.99 per cent of all people look better with clothes on. That's why we wear clothes.
Silly me; I thought we wore them to stay warm. ;) OK, Mathman, confess: who do you consider to be in that 0.01 per cent?

You want sexy? Kristi Yamaguchi fully clothed has more sex appeal in one little finger than Katarina Witt has in both of hers.
Well, I think Kristi is cute, and Katarina has tons of sex appeal (I don't know why, she just does). Fully clothed, that is. Even if she sometimes tries too much, which is normally a turn off, at least IMO -- see Michael Weiss (poor Mike is second in a FSU poll about men who people would pay NOT to see naked).

As for the fully clothed part: I think that if someone doesn't have sex appeal when fully clothed, then they just don't have it.

I have to follow the Mrs. Mathman rule: Thou shalt not lust after any skaters less than half thy age. But I get the last laugh -- Kristi is 31! And Sophia Loren and Tina Turner and Carol Heiss Jenkins -- now yer talkin'!

Who's first?

I am sorry I said anything at all; From now on I will keep opionions to myself; obviously they are not welcome here.

By the way - Jaimie made a brief statement on the CTV news - about her mom and people's reactions to the photo shoot - also she stated that she was misquoted about skating in the French Maids' outfit and that she just did it for publicity.

Oh, please don't do that! Toni and I (among others) are always here to listen!

Umm - this is a topic of debate which is raging up and down the line this week.

Well, Jamie has always struck me as a strong-willed gal who is going to do pretty much what she wants, when she wants and doesn't give a flying fig what anyone else thinks (and I imagine that includes David Pelletier in lots of cases ;) ).

Personally, I think that the photos are stunning. They aren't "smutty" like the photos in say, "Hustler" magazine or something of that genre. Also, she never really *showed* anything, even in those topless photos. I've seen more skin than that on the cover of magazines in the check-out line so many times I don't even notice anymore, LOL.

I look at the body as a temple - it's not the nudity so much as the attitude and atmosphere surrounding a photo shoot like this. I, like Heather, have studied the nude in drawing and painting and have a healthy appreciation of the human body. I have to admit as far as the "attitude and atmosphere" goes, however, I do have mixed feelings. No doubt she was paid a healthy sum for the shoot, but everything about it shouts "Publicity!!!!" And it seems to be generating publicity all right - both the positive and negative aspects. But - it was her personal decision, her life and her body. Hopefully she thought through to the consequences and ramifications of doing such a thing.

And where, by the way, are the MEN??? ;) I think it's time for the men to have a romp through the glossy pages!

The way I see this is that Jamie posed for the pictures, Paula let us know that they were out there, we looked and some gave their opinions of the pictures and how they felt about Jamie for choosing to be photographed. The opinions have ranged from loved them to disgusted by them. IMO all of those opinions are equally valid and should be equally welcome on this forum. Paula's the boss and makes the calls but to me if a poster is allowed to comment that the pictures look sexy why is another poster not allowed to say they look sleazy (one person's sex is another's sleaze sometimes).

Windspirit, to reply to your post IMO when skaters pose for pictures, or whatever that is going to invite the discussions that we have here they are putting themselves out there and open to whatevever comments and opinions the public may have. When they choose to be in the public eye they have to accept that along with adulation there will also be criticism. Posters at this forum OTOH should not be subjected to the same type of criticism by fellow posters as I said we are peers here. To me there is a difference in commenting on the actions of a public figure and commenting on the opinions of a fellow poster. To disapprove of someone's actions is in effect rejecting something about them ( in this case the decision to be photographed)and it does lesson your opinion of that aspect of their persona (their judgment of what's appropriate) so in a way is putting them down to a degree. I didn't read anywhere that someone stated they couldn't stand another person. As for how others stated their disapproval of Jamie posing for the pictures, the comments were that they appeared sleazy, they're not what a mother would want her daughter to do, they were disgusting, such overt sexuality is not needed in figure skating, the picture was terrible, disappointment that she chose to pose in an immodest way, questioned why she felt the need to pose in this way, likened the pictures to being photographed naked, these pictures are not art, they are tacky, saddened that women choose to be photographed in this way, and my favorite... her a$$ looks a mile wide (and I feel the same way about J-Lo and Beyonce). All are valid points that were reactions to her choice to pose for these pictures. No one said anything to ridicule her or to put her down. They expressed their feelings about what she did. I don't remember reading anything that said, let's all boycott SOI, Jamie should be stoned in the town square, Jamie is a vile horrible person, David ditch her before it's too late, OK Jamie time to turn the gold medal back in too, the French judge was right after all, do your Juicy's say "wide load", or hey Jamie call 1-800- lipo suction. That IMO would be bashing. In fact when someone voices their disappointment in a celebrity it usually is beaouse they are some one that the person had some respect for.

As to the various comments about role models. The Olympics are based on some pretty lofty ideas that go beyond normal sport. Most people would agree that although a lot of times reality falls short of those ideas still we continue to strive toward them. Again this is JMO but I feel that the current Olympic champions and those who aspire to be Olympians should hold themselves to higher standards than other athletes just because it is the Olympics. The Olympics are considered a wholesome family type of event, the ultimate in both athletic performance and the ideas of sportsmanship. I don't remember any athletes on their way to the top ever complain about being held up as a role model. All that I have seen interviewed seem to be honored to be thought of as one. Sports champions are the heros to a lot of our youth. It goes along with the territory of being a world class athlete to conduct yourself in a way that if a child did model your behavior they wouldn't be doing anything detremental or inappropriate.

As to liberal and conservative. I am a very liberal person. I may not agree with a conservative point of view but that POV being expressed doesn't offend me. OTOH some more liberal points of view can be offensive to those who are more conservative. Example, Grgranny tells us that she didn't allow her daughter to show her belly button. As someone who has her's pierced I may think that Grgranny is too conservative, but out of respect to her I would never say that. Grgranny's feelings about belly buttons are not a threat to me in any way and are probably not offensive to those who love to show he world that they are an inny or an outie. If OTOH I would start a thread about the locations of everyone's body piercings some of the more conservative posters might find that to be a topic that is inappropriate for this forum and would be offended. That was my point, that we respect the sensibilities of those who are more easily offended. After all we come here to "play". It should be enjoyable for all of us.

Granny please forgive all of my spelling mistakes...where is spell check???

Because one is a bash and one is not. All "bash" means is "insult"

If I said "Piel is a the most attractive well behaved person I have ever met" And someone answered with " I think she is ugly, and her behaviour is sleazy, pathetic, disgusting and dresses like a slut" That is an insultive bash. The more appropriate response would have been " I most strongly disagree and do not approve."

gsk8 made this clear.
No need to defend yourself - just watch the language of your posts. To say you "find something distasteful" is acceptable. To say, "dressed like a slut" and "sleazy" is NOT.

And it does not matter if the person is a skater in a magazine, or a poster on a message board. One does not deserve any more common respect in terms of insults than another.

As far as role models... Olympians and other athletes sure are role models as far as sport is concerned And they are proud to be looked up too again, as far as their achievements in sport are concerned. I know of not one Olympic athlete ( and I know a few, my coach is one) that isn't horrified at the fact that someone would use their personal life as a role model. The idea that someone that you do not know, and never will, being a role model for living life in general is just fairy-tale land IMO.

The Olympic motto is "Higher Faster Stronger" And they exist so young athletes of the World can come together in sport without politics (Ha! ;) )

The Olympics are based on some pretty lofty ideas that go beyond normal sport.
I am just wondering what other lofty ideas you have in mind.
