Original Dance

Compare 1992 field- Klimova/Ponamarenko, Duchensays, Usova/Zhulin, Gritschuk/Platov

1994 field- Torvil/Dean, Usova/Zhulin, Gritschuk/Platov

1998 field- Gritshcuk/Platov, Anissina/Peizerat, Krylova/Ovsiannikov, Bourne/Kraatz

None of the current teams would be even close to the top 3 in any of those eras, maybe not in the top 5. The current crop is pretty much a joke, they all are mediocre so it is like who is the best by default of a mediocre crop, none of whom are worthy of being the top but someone has to be by default.

I dont know why the dance field is so incredibly weak now compared to what it used to be. Maybe people arent interested in ice dance these days, I am not sure. The current field of second rate teams battling at the top is depressing though. I miss the days of strong ice dancers at the top, I used to love ice dance back then.

Half the field above would not be able to do the same elements they are doing today don't compare apples with oranges..
yes tonight all teams looked and performed a bit on edge.
.but if you asked this teams to just float around and being graceful and beautiful.
i bet you they all could look as good as the team you have above

Well the dance event may have been mediocre and paled in comparisions to past eras in quality, but atleast it was judged correctly. That is largely since there were no Asians in the event, as this event is obviously set up for the Asians, but regardless the reason it was the only fairly marked event. So despite the dissapointing quality of the teams near the top in dance today, in that sense it became, like the top teams of the event in dance today by default, the highlight of the day at the GP final.

Wow that is the most unsubstantiated and hedging on bigoted remark you've made so far. I, by no means, believe it's 'set up' for Asians. If you look at out of all the fields, 2/4 disciplines have Asians at the top. If your remark is true, there would be Asians at the top of the podium in all fields.

I agree that there isn't the same creativity that there was in the past to some of the ice dancers of the past, but I also have to say that the ice dance teams do a lot more 'dancing' than they did in the past. You've got rose colored glasses on if you're going to completely disregard the blood, sweat, and tears these athletes have put in to the sport - stating they don't belong here at the top compared to skaters of old.

The programs have progress in one way (difficulty) and may have slightly regressed (for the moment) with the standards of points CoP puts on them. The judge elements/presentation still needs tweaking, but with critics like you who belly the end of great 'ice dancing' (which is one in a sea of thousands of fans) I can see how skating might be in a decline according to media. If everyone were to have that attitude, there would no longer be 'ice dancing'.

Well I don't know about anyone else but it's nice to see Tanith and Ben in first place.

ITA. So many have taken last season as evidence that B/A's best years are behind them and think it's time for them to step aside (at 23 and 25!) for the younger teams.

With their hard work and determination to improve, B/A are showing that they are still formidable competitors and they're not taking the back seat on the bus for anyone.

How would last season have been proof of that? They BEAT all the teams that are left at last years Worlds.

Their bronze at Worlds was a shock to almost everyone, and many thought it was undeserved (I was not one of them) or a fluke. Many posters have predicted World gold in 2008 for DomShabs, DelShoes or V/M, but few thought B/A had much of shot.

I personally still believe that B/A would have a tough time winning World gold in 2008 when you look at the judges that have been selected for ice dance. DomShabs have a major advantage there.

Well I did not think their World bronze last year was a gift, although it was very clear between them and the French I thought. Their CDs were similar, Belbin/ Agosto had the better OD, the French the better FD, the scores basically reflect this and why it was so close in the end which makes sense IMO. Granted I am one of those who was surprised since it seemed the momentum was against them going into Worlds. The French are probably a sentimental pick for people in a "wuz robbed" argument since they always end up a narrow 4th at Worlds, but thems the breaks sometimes.

I guess you could also say I was one of those thinking they were losing ground to Domnina/Shabalin and Virtue/Moir this season, I did not think too Delobel/ Schoenfeldner, but to the other two possibly. It looks like they are about to prove people who thought that like myself wrong here too though. Good for them.

hey everyone, I have a question about D/S (France)'s twizzles. When they go clockwise (or counterclockwise, but it's either one of them), do they do it on both feet? I wasn't sure because it seemed to be like they do it on both feet because the "raised" foot is so low on the ground....

A twizzle by definition is a one-foot turn. They might be keeping their free leg really low, but if they had both feet on the ice, it wouldn't count.

Seems like it was a bit of a splatfest, in terms of dance. Good for BelGosto; people have been counting them out, so it's nice that they're on top. Bad day for V/M to mess up the twizzles for the first time in a couple of seasons, but oh well. At least they were scored accordingly. FD should be interesting.

BTW, temperboy28, i respect your freedom of opinion, but saying, as you did in an earlier post, that the discipline should be eliminated completely if the teams don't meet some 'standard' that you have and saying that they 'suck' and are 'pathetic' was uncalled for. If you are displeased with the teams in the discipline, don't watch. There are plenty of very devoted dance fans who are pleased with the discipline right now, like many of these teams, and would not appreciate the above comment. I also think that your comment about Asians was quite disrespectful.

i think when thread get crazy like this...all it comes to ignoring such remarks...

so....see you guys in the Free

DELOBEL / SCHOENFELDER really done a greatd job on the day..I had them in front,
most teams didn't seem or look sure footed. How SAD is it to skate this grand final in front of empty seats.no atmosphere at all.How can skaters connect to the audiences ( all they can do is make believe)
Also the camera angles left allot to be desired,i always like to see the all figure not just the boots.

Guys, why Dom/Shab was so slow? Why judges didnt give them less marks for there spin (it was so bad)? for there last lift (it was so hard)? Only because they are russians? And team number 1 in Russia? In this case i prefer to see Khohlova/Novitsky in there place
Good for Bel-Agosto - they made really good work for this season. Good for Del-Shol - they skated really good/
Sad for V/M, but this was there first GPF and really strong competition.
