Patrick Chan

I recommend Patrick to consider acting as his 2nd career: http://youtu.be/WVSK4Xi6eUQ
Omg his expression!!!
CLASSIC!!! SO HILARIOUS!!! Patrick did that SO WELL!!! He is so serious on the ice, but his off-ice demeanor is almost completely opposite. I'm so glad he skated in The Ice so he could be in some ShibSibs videos.

"The 1998 Olympic figure skating events were held at White Ring." Oh goodness, I don't even know what to say. I laughed SO HARD at how Alex said it. He has a good dramatic voice. Tara Lipinski MUST see this video! Talk about redefining your Olympic moment!

There's a new article about Patrick on Ice Network headlined Chan enjoying life without stresses of competition. Below are my favorite excerpts.

About his newfound perspective on training and competition
One thing Chan said he already has learned this season is not to put so much pressure on himself.

"Last year was just punishment," Chan said. "I was digging at things and digging at it and trying so hard to make things work. Last year, I perpetually made myself crazy over my Axel. I created a monster.

"This year, if things are not going well, I'll just do a run-through with a triple or a double Axel or something like that, and I can come back the next day and do some of the best triples or quads. I'm mad at myself for not letting myself do that last year. But I had always done two full run-throughs and thought if I didn't do that, I'd lose my endurance or the jumps.

"For the Japan Open in practices, I went through paces. I had some practices that were pretty bad because of the jet lag, but I didn't let it get to me. I went in and did my job. I wanted to prove to people that if I am given a job, that I would take it seriously and do a good job. I focused on the quality of my skating and what made me one of the best skaters in the world."

"I watch him [Jeremy Abbott] and see how hard it is," Chan said. "I don't regret anything about taking this year off. I am really enjoying things a lot. I have found how to let things go a little easier. If the triple Axel or the quad isn't going well, I just let it go. I won't tackle it over and over and over."
This is what Guru SF has said all along. I'm glad Patrick is figuring it out for himself.

About what he's doing outside of skating
Because he is not training for the competitive circuit, he said he has had extra time to enjoy some of his hobbies, mainly tinkering with computers and cars. His "project car" is a Mitsubishi Evolution. He is looking forward to taking a skiing trip to Calgary and Vancouver in December.
Patrick is a man of many talents. I like it.

About Scott Hamilton
"I admire Scott so much, not only as a skater -- because he was a phenomenal skater and achieved so much in his career -- but also for the way he handled himself as a businessman," Chan said. "To be asked by Scott, to skate in his show, is like the Queen of England asking someone to come to Buckingham Palace. Scott is the king of figure skating."
Well, if Scott is the king of figure skating, what does that make Patrick? Patrick is nothing if not quotable. I'm glad he has such respect for Scott. It seems to be mutual.

I'm so happy Patrick has realized his 3A issue is a self created monster, albeit with a lot of outside help. Let it go. Let it go. Let it go.

Cultivating the mindset is 99% of the battle when it comes to competition performance. So happy Patrick is doing it. With everyone clamouring that he needs a technical coach, I believe it is the self training that is doing him the most good at this time. It gives him breathing room to find and be himself, to self reflect and gain insights, any of which can be worth more than a lifetime of experiences. It helps to observe others too, to see why they succeed or fail. Abbott is a good example of holding it too tight, caring too much about results, past and future, and about what others think, say, and do.

The new Patrick will be breathtaking in his performances, competitive or exhibition.

One thing I have been wondering though since all the reports about his still living and training in Detroit, is he attending the University of Toronto? There has been no mention of his taking courses at all.

PChiddy is the king's successor.

Not quite. Patrick is the all time best male skater on ice, different standards of different times notwithstanding. But Hamilton's skating career has an extremely long span, most of it outside of his competitive career. It has taken decades, and almost his whole life, of dedication to figure skating, plus his business acuity, to make the kind of contribution he has, prompting Patrick to call him the king of figure skating. We don't know yet it Patrick will choose figure skating for his whole life and career and, if he does, if he will be able to match Hamilton's achievements, depending on his personal dedication and abilities as well as the opportunities afforded by the time.

One way or another, enjoy your life, Patrick. Don't worry, be happy.

He could be king of Canada!

He could be king of Canada!

That would be Kurt. Again we don't know if Patrick will succeed him.

Patrick already surpassed Kurt in terms of competition honors, except for the number of the World Champion titles, a good thing for now, for us anyway. ;)

Patrick skated in the Scott Hamilton and Friends show on Nov 8 and afterward he tweeted this cute picture. Michael Bolton was the singer this year. Jeff Buttle choreographed the show. Someone on FSU named Meredith posted a lengthy review of the show here. Her Patrick (and Jeff) mentions are:
Kudos especially to choreographer Jeffrey Buttle, who made the transitions in the show seamless, something that is difficult to pull off. One act seemed to flow to the next with Bolton's introduction of the music and a bit of history behind each. There were several group numbers, including one when all the men took the ice at once. Dancers had two group numbers as did Buttle and Chan. Wonderful!
With Michael back on the stage, he introduced Georgia. It was a huge hit for him. Patrick Chan took the ice and skated beautifully. Every move perfect, finished.
I wonder if the Jeff/Patrick duet was Elegie or something else. No videos of Patrick in the show are online yet. There are few videos from previous years so my hopes aren't high.

Patrick also starred in a promo skit for a show on Canadian Disney Channel. It will make you laugh and Patrick seemed right at home doing it. It matches his off-ice personality. "Feel the dance... Feel the dance... Feel the dance..." Patrick needs to show this side of himself more often on the ice! ;) Watch the hilarity here.

At the bottom of the review, the poster stated the name of the song: When I'm on My Feet Again. Here are some photos from the Quicken Loans Arena facebook.

Thanks for the catch! I completely missed that when I skimmed it initially. The photos are nice. Besides being complimentary of Jeff as a choreographer, the reviewer gushed over his solo program to You Don't Know Me, saying he really created a mood on the ice (broken only when he came nose to nose with a cute toddler in the front row and broke into a huge grin). It wasn't related to Patrick so I didn't quote it here, but it made me smile. I'm so glad Jeff is getting to shine as a professional skater.
