Patrick Chan

Hey guys, I'm not sure if this will be of any interest for anything but I was having fun with Excel and protocols and I did this for all the other top guys, so I'm posting the results for Patrick here.

Basically I created a 'fantasy protocol' where I added up all the max GOEs each element has gotten this season from international competitions (GP series and 4CC) in order to calculate possible total scores if we add in those max GOEs per element that he's gotten through the year. I haven't included Nationals, because those kinds of results are always ripe for 'inflation' discussions, so better avoid them.

This is only for this season; I am not counting the max he has gotten for these elements in the previous seasons, like I didn't for the other top men. Also, I have only counted GOEs he's gotten for level 4 spins and steps, even if he has gotten higher GOE for level 3s, just to be consistent with what I've been doing for everyone.

Here's Patrick's fantasy protocol.

Notes: I seriously doubt his PCS would be that low if he managed to go clean and land everything, so you can add up a few more points in there to add to his FS and total score. I actually am surprised how he only got 93 at Cup of China (his maximum internationally, with just a fall on the 4S).

A few interesting tidbits from this season. He's one of two men (Yuzu is the other; edit: actually, Javi makes 3, as he got 2.10 at the Euros; then there's Denis Ten at GP France too!) to have gotten a full 2.10 GOE on his level 4 Step Sequence in the SP (this was at 4CC). And the only man to have gotten +3 GOE on a jump in the FS from all the top men I've researched for (Hanyu, Uno, Chen, Fernandez, Jin). This was for his FS 4T-3T at Skate Canada.

Edit: When I say maximum, I mean highest GOE, duh.

lol.. i just realised the clinic is in windsor lol... for some reason i thought it was in vancouver.... so it's not like patrick needed his coaches for such a short day trip

Are you considering to meet Patrick in Windsor on Mar 4, if you do....please tell him about this fan fest and his fans want the 4s in the SP ;).

cannot go but i told him last night in my dream....

also, regarding the fantasy protcols : that was super interesting to see... we can observe that Patrick has gotten HIGH GOE all season for each of his elements, just not at the same moment... a couple clean skates for him and he is well above the 300 mark.

Now, I think that if Patrick were to skate clean on both programs, his GOE wouldn't be in the low 9s like xerya mentioned but close to 9.75 even 10. So we can add maybe 1.5 to the SP and probably 5 points in the LP... he would be close to 315...

what I am wondering is that if Patrick did that, would that LOWER the PCS of other skaters... i mean if he had the performance of the night in the SP, relatively early in his final group as well as the same for the LP... would judges be inclined to keep a PCS gap between him and the others... ;)

Nice work xeyra. You and others may be interested in this great site which shows videos of top performances from major events along with the protocol. You can also make selection of skaters and their best elements. It helps also in picking out highest element scores by seasons and events.

Patrick Chan and his COC 2016 LP

For some strange reason his 2016 4CC LP is censored.

Here are his highest scores under Best Elements

Best Elements are selected by scores, thus YAN Han's best jumps are 4T and 4T combos instead of his 3A.

probably this website doesn't have 4CC in there either....

for han.. the GOE factor and BV will automatically make quads landed better than 3A landed no?

Well, this would have been useful when I was doing this! :rofl2:

Edit: I should have probably looked at senior B competitions too, but I felt it easier to limit to the highest level ones, though I was just noticing his highest CCoSp4 was at Finlandia Trophy for example.

also... i checked other there... do not forget that they count best elements like the best points on a jump... so for instance Yuzu's is his 4Loop... he's landed other jumps better than that but the BV is indeed the factor...

also, yuzuru got higher points than patrick on his combo 4t-3t... but not necessarily higher GOE.. it's because he does it in the second half... with the 10% bonus... so a few things to consider when looking at this interesting site

:) Seeing your work got me to show this site. It will help in your future analytic works to benefit us all. ;)

The only issue with that site is that they don't differentiate the highest scores from the FS or SP, but for the purposes of my analysis, I did differentiate, so the highest score for, say, the CCoSp4, is different in both FS and SP, because the variables in both programs are different (stamina being the main one).

I'm sure we can find more issues with site depending on what we are looking for. :) However, it resolves more issues in compilation and analysis than it presents. As for differentiating the programs a score is from, click on the score and it will show you the program.

Yeah, I did do that, but just saying the site wouldn't have made it much easier than going through protocols anyway, if my intent was to present different highest GOEs for each program. Though I do love this site. I am going to spend many an hour here .

I remember seeing another site that did something similar to this, but it hadn't been updated with much of this season's scores. Is it the same site, only with a new visual, or are there two different compilation sites like this?

Edit: Actually, nevermind, it does have a drop down menu that differentiates SP and FS segment, so that is helpful!

Edit 2: And it differentiates highest PCS, TES and GOEs per segment too! This site would have definitely made my life easier if I'd know of it.
