Hi everyone.

I had a bit of free time today and was so excited about the upcoming Worlds that I decided to "quantify" the performance by country from the last three Worlds to compare it to this year's. The goal is to find out what countries are doing better and worse over the last four years.

I came up with a nice system that enables us to see just that. It also could be easily applied to select 10 teams and alternates to an Olympic Team event.

What I did:
I did look at all four events and converted a top 24 finish to points. If a given country won, it got 24 points, if it placed 24th it got one points. I only used the highest result per country per discipline. Unfortunately in pairs we did not have 24 entrants any of these years, but I still used the same system not to mix things up. I chose 24 because one needs to be in top 24 in men and ladies' events to make the final (and it used to be the case in pairs and dance at one point in the past).

As I hate ties, I came up with the following solution.
In case if a country gets the same amount of points, then a country with a higher number of participants making the top 24 in all four events ends up higher, then if there is still a tie a country with a higher number of points out of 24, then if there is still a tie, a country that was represented in a competition with more entrants, then if there is still a tie... a country that was represented in one event that got a higher position in one of two parts of an event (SP or FS). I know that sounds complicated by it works in practice, at the end there are no ties in my rankings!

So let's start with 2012, then 2013 and then 2014.

Surprisingly USA comes on top under this system which is really shocking as I thought Russia and to a lesser extent Canada were easily going to be the winners/in the top 2.

I just know Russia will be making changes after this week. They were only successful in the women's competition. Glad and relieved that USA will have 3 men, women and dance pairs for next year in Boston.

France 6 / 4 / 6 / 4
China 7 / 8 / 8 / 5
Japan 5 / 7 / 5 / 6
Italy 4 / 5 / 2 / 7
Spain 9 / 9 / 9 / 8
Kazakhstan 13 / 13 / 25 / 9
Slovakia x / 20 / 30 / 10
South Korea x / 11 / 10 / 11
Uzbekistan / 24 / 18 / x / 12
Denmark x / 28 / x / 13
Sweden 16 / 14 / 15 / 14
Israel 21 / 27 / 17 / 15
Germany 8 / 6 / 7 / 16
Austria 17 / 23 / 29 / 17
Hong Kong x / x / x / 18
Czech Republic 11 / 15 / 12 / 19
Ukraine 12 / 12 / 18 / 20
Latvia x / x / x / 21
Turkey x / x / 24 / 22
United Kingdom 10 / 10 / 11 / 23

Georgia 15 / x / x / 30
Estonia 14 / 16 / 14 / 31
Poland x / 22 / 22 / 32

And these are the unfortunate countries that either "placed" in the last four years or managed to compete this year without making the top 24

Armenia x / x / x / x
Azerbaijan 20 / 19 / 13 / x
Belgium 18 / 24 / 19 / x

Federation officials seem pretty positive in the interviews. Remember, two strongest pairs were not in the event and in Ice Dance the strongest athletes swapped partners, so the Federation espects Ice Dance to get better over the years as those partners get used to each other. Men are just bad though.

Is there a medal for the worst country? :disapp:

Everything is relative, but the worst country would have to be Switzerland as not only it placed in bottom three in both Ladies and Men (they qualified two entrants), a Swiss born Filipino skater also placed in the bottom 3 in Ladies. It almost looks like Stéphane Lambiel/Sarah Meier competed decades ago.

But mind you, some countries did not even qualify a skater. As example, Bulgaria which had Worlds Champions in Dance not that long ago.

Some traditionally stronger countries are on the slippery slope... Great Britain did not even manage to qualify skaters to single events. Finland, I won't even go there, it gets from bad to worse.

On the other hand, some others are clearly gaining ground. Spain with Fernandez and there is a new Pair that almost made the TES right before Shanghai. Also, Kazakhstan with Tursynbayeva going to seniors. Latvia doesn't look too bad either with Vassilievs going into seniors. And of course, China is getting stronger with Boiyang in Seniors next year and their Junior World Champion Pair too. Malaysia and Singapore qualified skaters to free skate in Juniors this year, so there is potential there too.

Russia are in working procces with ID, new and young couples there. Pairs are more than fine. Their Pair no. 3, 4 and 5, got 5th, 6th and 10th place at worlds. The only cuntry who can afford that. 2 of them were young Pairs (T&M and A&R), A&R have been together for 10 months, only. Other new couples are on the way. Men are what they are, at the moment.
