Reactions and criticism of judging by Network commentators - NBC, CBC, BBC, etc

She got a higher than TEAM fs score with a fall this time and with this very fall her pcs rised 7 points from Team event whre she was clean. I have the same issue with Lipnitskaya who got around same score.

She didn't do a great flip in the team event either. And except for the flip fall which she did get dinged on, all her elements were better in the individual competition than the team. Her tech score was about the same as in team and I think the slight tech increase is due to landing the other jumps better and having a different panel.

I don't mind people complaining about the PCS scores inflation (even if I'm not a fan of PCS), but when someone says that Gold shouldn't get a 136 for a fall, that sounds more like a complaint about the tech side than the PCS side and that's what I commented on. I guess I could've misinterpreted the original post.

Today's Washington Post.

Her component marks were as high as Kim’s, but the idea that Sotnikova is anywhere as close to an artist as Kim is laughable. They are both good, yes, but there are levels of good. One is good in the way you call your grandmother a good dancer because she does the cha-cha slide at the family reunion. The other is a prima ballerina.

Component marks don't measure solely artistry. Here Scott explains why it isn't controversial, essentially that Adelina checks off all the boxes required to get a high score: http://www.nbcolympics.com/video/today-figure-skating-controversy?ctx=olympic-journey

It's healthy to consider viewpoints other than your own.

B]Brennan: Official says judges slanted toward Adelina Sotnikova
[/B]

A high-ranking Olympic figure skating official, who spoke to USA TODAY sports on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the topic, said the geographic makeup of the judging panel "was clearly slanted towards (Olympic gold medalist) Adelina Sotnikova," adding "this is what they can do."

As for reigning Olympic champion Yuna Kim, the judge said: "Kim was so much better than Adelina in all aspects. Both Kostner and Kim were better than Adelina."

It may be that in the cold light of reason, analyzing all the components of both ladies' programs, Adelina truly deserved to win. It's unfortunate that because of the makeup of the panel, the marks look suspect, and that's a dreadful thing to do to Adelina herself. People will always be able to point to the relationships between Russian skating and the judging and tech panel and say that something was manipulated. What if Adelina really was the superior skater? It's an injustice to her if that superiority is called into question when it need not have been at all.

 Exactly. The one I most feel for is Adelina, especially after reading all these hateful posts. Yes, most of you try to justify yourself by saying it's not directed at her personally. However, if she were to read some of these comments, I'm sure she would be hurt regardless. And there are others who come right out and take digs at her, wishing her some ill-fate. That's what I find disgusting about this entire mess.

well said.
This is so insane. Why are people bashing Adelina anyway? Leave the girl alone. On the other hand, I do agree the judging needs to be looked into. I don't think Yuna was underscored. But I do think BOTH Russian ladies were grossly overscored.

Poor Korea. They always get screwed over at the Olympics. Didn't that gymnast also beat Paul Hamm but a math error gave him the gold instead and he refused to concede it? Lol.

As much as I do not like Adelina bashers, I hate hyenas coming for an opportunity to claw and chew Yuna. (Sorry for my bad allusion. I could not come up with a better one.)

Oh, I see. We'll wait and see. Though it's not the first time Korean OC protested the Olympic results. It has happened in speed skating many times.:p

Many times? I didnt know that. Please give me a specific source?
what do you mean MANY TIMES? lol.

I am sure Kostner, Ashely, Mao, and Yuna check off those bullet points that Scott referred to that Adelina checked off. The difference is in quality and level, The obvious discrimination is in the fact that Mao and Kostner didn't score 75 in PC's yet they skated clean programs also, No matter which point you take the judging still looks like the Russian was score was inflated compared to the other skaters at the event, not just Yuna Kim, which makes the judging skeptical

The most famous being 2002 SLC protest over South Korean short track skater Kim's DQ in men's 1500m which gave Apolo Anton Ohno the gold medal.

Don't forget the Apollo Anton Ohno - Kim Dong Sung controversy in 2002.

Knowing Ms. Kim's class, she won't stoop to that level. She has always maintained that there isn't anything she can do about judging. It's unfortunate that Ms. Kim was rarely a beneficiary of this corrupt practice. (when was the last time an ISU event took place in S. Korea?) It has been evident for the past years that ISU struggled to find worthy competitor against Ms. Kim so that they can keep things more "interesting."

Likewise, S. Korea will not file any complaint - it's hosting the next Olympics, for pete's sake. Perhaps it is even looking for a payback when they get their chance. Do people want that? The history repeats itself endlessly? I doubt anyone wants to follow to the logical ends of this nihilistic attitude. People want peace, I get that. But most people also want justice as well. It is a balancing act we exercise every day, and figure skating is no different. Especially for Olympics. If we were to hold our athletes to a higher standard, especially in these Olympic games, we need a worthy system and a likewise worthy culture that nurtures fairness.

Also, those who attack athletes when they are not responsible for whatever injustice they perceive need to realize that they are not doing any service to their cause. They should not blur the line. Adelina could have easily been a victim just as anybody else in this system. They also give excuses to those who do not want to disrupt the carefully decorated apple cart of status quo.

That's the frustrating thing about Ashley for me. I actually have grown to like her skating style, she does have a presence and passion on the ice, especially when she skates clean, like last night. But she needs to work on her jumping technique and stop two footing her landings on her 3-3.

She says she wants to stay around until the next Olympics but instead of criticizing the judging (which we know is rotten anyway), she needs to look inward and improve, I don't really hear her talking about her own skating skills.

I have to agree that probably not much will come out of this. If Plushenko in 2010 with all his stature and his extremely powerful federation couldn't get anything done, this is most likely just a formality. I'm sure Yuna will have a great post-competition life and she is clearly not obsessed with winning.
