Rhythm Dance for 2026-27

Not Strauss right?
Oh, I hope so. Why's would anyone ever want to dance to anything except the Blue Danube?

When I was growing up, figure skating shows were the only opportunity I had to hear classical music (except for Buggs Bunny cartoons). That was colol.

Now, though, I am kind of going in the opposite direction. All this "popular music of the eighties, nineties, sixties, etc. -- I was getting used to it and starting to enjoy all the possibilities that skaters and choreographers were coming up with.

Is this real? Sounds intriguing, but that high bpm does not. Do they have the same rhythm throughout, like this season? I did not like that. I can't picture anything good from a Daft Punk waltz at 186 bpm, but maybe I simply don't understand any of this well enough to imagine it.

I am looking forward to the waltzes. It's been a while. I don't really care how many BPM it is, just that it's really ballroom dance, not the awful 90's stuff (sorry fans, the only ones I liked was Laurence and Guillaume's, Piper and Paul's and Alison and Saulius's one, the rest was a bit bleeh to me, so many ID couples whom I usually love not hitting it for me). I liked the 80's, the social dances of the many decennia, but having a really Dance-like theme is something I look forward to.

It's a good thing the theme changes every year, so lovers of one type also get to watch something they like once in a while!

Hey, 8 is my favourite, probably!

7 is fantastic, but it looked like crap
Final Fantasy 8 looks worse than 7. It's just blurry, with far less interesting production/world design and character/costume design. Yes the models in 7 are blockier, but there's a charm to that. It helps lean into the feeling of being in a completely different world.

Final Fantasy Tactics has a Waltz, wow I heard this one so much in battles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eH9XB_3WrSU&list=PL416A83DC4B2E1D70

A waltz for this purpose is something with 186 beats per second
Oh, so only computers are allowed to compete next year.

I predict The Chairman's Waltz (Memoirs of a Geisha) will be popular and I have no problem with that... though I would be ecstatic if some brave souls went for either Anderson's Waltzing Cat or Waltz of the Mandrake from Pan's Labyrinth.

I don't expect my second favourite waltz of all to be picked, because it's not as far as I can tell well known.

(My favourite is Khachaturian's Masquerade, yes probably commonplace but I have loved it from a small child and that small child still rules :))

I would love for someone to skate to Merry-Go-Round of Life from Howl's Moving Castle 😍
It's the perfect BPM for juniors! For seniors it'll need to be sped up a bit to meet the requirement, tried doing that in YT and it still sounds good to me

The quick waltzy bit starts at 0:48

I do think it is a good idea, but I admit, I will miss the 'what the hell are they doing to the music of my youth' chaos of the last two years...
Don't worry, now that the RD is more staid I fully expect there to be more chaotic brainbreaking choices in the FD! 😆 you just know Marie-France, Igor and Benoit have some terrible ideas in storage that didn't quite fit the BPM the last couple seasons...

I doubt this will happen. Joe Hisaishi doesn't like people modifying his music. So, it would be very difficult obtain his permission

But skaters have used Joe Hisaishi's works in the past... Deniss V and RikaShin both used Princess Mononoke - RikaShin only locally in Japan of course but Deniss competed internationally with his program, even at the Olympics 2022. Deniss even mixed the Princess Mononoke piece with a completely different Karl Jenkins piece.

And some skaters / teams have used Howl's Moving Castle before as well.

But yeah all of these were before the music rights tightening recently. However since there's no Olympics next season, I hope it'll be easier for skaters to use whatever music they want 🤞

I suspect Hisaishi makes whoever is cutting and arranging his music work for the privelege - as he has a perfect right to do, of course

It all depends. I think he is a particular case. We will see.
