Well, since we're putting so much stock in what the inventors of the Finnstep think, here's what one of them tweeted tonight after watching them back to back (not just after watching V/M compete at Finlandia):

Poor Petri. One compliment from him to Meryl and Charlie and all of a sudden, that toxic V/M fan twitter is shouting something like "BUT HE COMPLIMENTED V/M EARLIER IN THE SEASON! THIS IS POLITICS!"

Could be a finland-usa fix.

Russia hasn't needed any judging shenanigans in the team competition. Even if you were to switch the placements of B/S and P/B AND Voir and Marlie, they would still have a substantial lead in the event. Give them credit. The four year turnaround of Russia's skating program is remarkable, and they should be given credit for it.

I think Russia clearly is going to win the Team. I do think maybe it could be a bit closer in scores. But they are the best overall team. However, I do believe in the colluding. I will say this, I have a hard time thinking Skate Canada isn't doing what they can to ensure men's gold. The politicking is sadly part of the game.

Welcome to a new tradition. When Canadians can't win through their own skating, they will start screaming that the results are fixed. Colluding!!!! Politicking!!!! Would they like to have second gold medal awarded? Second gold medal for team, second gold medal in dance, and if Chan again doesn't do his job, let's give them second gold medal in men. Well, why stop at three second gold medals? Why not having the whole set of gold medals (one for each discipline) for Canadians, and then gold/silver/bronze for those who actually deserve it?

But did they know that ahead of time?

Welcome to a new alternate universe, in which Russian coaches and L'Equipe are Canadian whiners!

I've no idea if the supposed collusion is true. There have been some questionable results in the team event, but that could be due to any number of things. Still, L'Equipe isn't the sort of publication that will run with a conspiracy theory without looking into it first. I'd love to know what they have on the story that they haven't printed.

I assume whoever gave them this story is someone whose skater(s) missed out on the team gold, or one of the NA-based dance coaches.

exactly, the way they are spreading the propaganda in their media is shameful
its as if they are ready to make an excuse if they don't win any gold in figure skating

as usual Ice Dance is the easy target for it

I do wonder whether "Russian coach" refers to affiliation to the Russian federation, Russian birth, or Russian citizenship?

Is Shpilband a Russian coach? If so, is this his way of getting back at Zoueva one more time?

Maybe Sotnikova's coach is unhappy that Adelina won't get a team gold. Or Voronov's coach, thinking he should have gone to Sochi. Maybe Krylova is annoyed that B/S have been allowed to overtake W/P, even though that has nothing to do with the D/W vs. V/M rivalry. Who knows? It could be any number of people.

ETA: Or Vasiliev, since all the top pairs are now sent to Mozer's group.

Voronov is coached by Tutberidze which is Julia's coach too, so that is impossible

Sotnikova posted pic of her and Julia together, so no grudges there, they needed Julia for SP experience as she is sometimes tense in SP
Julia needed another 70+ which Sotnikova has build momentum already in the SP

Yes, Shpilband has Russian birth, but he has been a US citizen for a long time. I am asking stylistically whether L'Equipe would refer to Shpilband as Russian, given he is a long time US citizen, coaching French & Italian and U.S. teams (but not Russian) teams at the Olympics? Would they refer to Anissina as Russian or French?

I believe in this story. L'Equipe doesn't have any reasons to tell lies, especially because figure skating doesn't even interest the general public there anymore.
I just wish they would come up with more evidence (names!).

Disclaimer: I have not read the entire thread.

That said, my two cents, for what they're worth:
If the L'Equipe quote from the OP and thread title -- " A Russian Coach : 'The United States will help us win the Gold medal in the Team Event and in Pairs' " -- is accurate, it suggests to me that the "Russian" coach who is cited is not Shpilband.
Unless ... Shpilband (in the present day) has been known to refer to the Russian federation as "us." Has he?

I took it to mean a coach who coaches in Russia...but then I wondered whether that was quite what they meant.

This “story” is all absolute nonsense. First of all, the Ice Dance Technical Committee purposely stipulated that none of the dance tech panels in Sochi will be from countries represented by the top 5 finalists at the 2013 Worlds, ostensibly to avoid any “conspiracy issues.” The tech panel has more influence on the overall score than one or two judges. (Check the Protocols for the Tech Panel in the Short Dance. Chair of the IDTC is the Tech Controller from Poland; the tech specialist is Japanese, the Asst. Tech Specialist is Hungarian, and the Ref is Israeli.) Also the judging panel itself is drawn 30 minutes before the event so there is no guarantee that either a Russian or American judge will be on the panel. And once on the panel there is no guarantee which marks will be discarded.
Whoever “leaked” this alleged scheme either doesn’t know this, nor does L’Equipe . There are numerous cases of errors printed by respectable newspapers that are often retracted after further investigation.
In my opinion, Igor Shpilband was the most influential individual in turning US Ice Dance into the strong program it is today. I’ve known Igor for more than 20 years. It’s ludicrous to think that he would be behind this lie since he has become one of the most successful coaches in the US and refused to return to Russia when they begged him to return to head their dying dance program.

I thought the so called Israeli referee had an address in Hungary or something like that.

One has to wonder why DW were not penalized for the twizzles both for GPF and today.
