Sakamoto to retire after 2026 Olympics

Yes, the program selection was leading to that conclusion, and of course, many athletes do retire after the games... however, I just don't like when skaters say they will retire after a precise competition... it just puts pressure on them to do well for their last outing. Sometimes it works, sometimes it backfires. I hope Kaori will win gold at the games. I am with her all the way !

If you refer to Kaori here, I don't think she has clearly stated that the Olympics will be her last competition. Some articles say that, others say that she will retire at the end of the season so Worlds could be her last competition...

The article doesn't specify the exact competition, so it could be Olympics or Worlds; she may not have decided that yet.

I just looked up what GPs she is going to; it would be emotional to see her in "swan programs" in person. Alas, it's France and Japan.

I did see her in person at Skate Canada in Vancouver.

She's a wonderful skater and person. It's sad her skating career is ending, but it should be entertaining to watch her as a coach at competitions!

I know... I saw that on social media... and specified it may not be trustworthy :) In any case, many skaters do not go to worlds after the Olympics... especially those who win gold... so perhaps i am just wishing gold for kaori :)

I saw Kaori many times live. Probably the skate I will remember most was the 2022 Skate America free skate where the audience was going bananas! :dbana: Other than programs, I will remember how endearing her sportsmanship was when she hugged Alyssa at Boston Worlds. It was a moment!

Kaori has already had an excellent career. She will retire as a three time world champion and her legacy is already cemented. Her career was long and she will always be remembered for that speed across the ice.

I love her music selections. I can already envision myself crying after her performances this season.

I really hope I get to see her live at Worlds and I really hope to see her at the Olympic podium (preferably with gold!). She is an amazing skater and she will be missed. I guess there is no point in being sad just yet, as we still have one more season with her - let's enjoy it while it lasts!

this is already making me a tad emotional. what a bright light she has been in women's figure skating! i will miss her dearly and the example she has set with her positivity and sportsmanship. her moment with Alysa at worlds this year is something i will never forget. i hope she truly enjoys the ride this season no matter what happens! go Kaori!

I love her personality and her sportsmanship - always cheering for the competitors even when they beat her. I also have always been touched by the support/love and her friendship with Mai Mihara in good times and in not so good times (Mai's illness).

She also cheered (wholeheartedly) for Amber at the GPF (the japanese girls did Amber's final pose while waiting for the scores - so sweet and touching)
