Sasha Cohen withdraws fomr Skate America

This can't be good. :frown:

I don't remember hearing about this many injured skaters after the 98 Olympics, now it seems like no one can compete anymore.

Holy cow! First Michelle and now Sasha..... I bet there will be many SA tickets available for real cheap now.

Best wishes to Sasha to get healthy!

I just printed out the participant list from the USFS event page and noticed how many have withdrawn since the original list! Good grief, the pressure is now going to be on all the 'lower rung' skaters to rise to the occasion. At least we will get to see some names on TV that we would not ordinarily see.....

Robin must be fuming with this turn of events - or perhaps she saw it coming.

I hate to hear about any injury to any skater. SA sure is turning out to be a different looking competition than originally though.

It will be good to see some different faces, and it'll be good for the lower ranked skaters to get there names out there.

Best of luck to Sasha for a complete recovery!

I do hope Sasha gets well soon and that she and Michelle skate wonderfully at Nationals and Worlds (and that she finishes second to Michelle at both :p )

I know I replied to this thread. It probably went off in Cyberspace.

The news of Sasha is absolutely shocking. It appears from the article that she is optimistic about recovery which is a good sign. I am happy about that. She will follow the Dr's advice and hopefully get to China for the GP. However, I would be concerned about such a long trip without doing much exercise.

Life! ain't it a bummer? If it ain't knees, or hips, it's lower back.

It's too sad that skaters have to push so hard, There have been too many injuries. I hope she has a speedy recovery. Was this a scoring event for her?

If Sasha has to not train hard for four weeks, I do not see how COC is possible. There would be hardly any time to train, and that long plane ride would be murder. I guess we will have to see, though. I wish her and Michelle and all those other injured skaters the best.

In looking at the USFSA site, they have her listed as a seeded skater. I think this was a scoring event for her as other seeded skaters are listed as having this as a nonscoring event if that what they had decided on

Wow, I said before that I had the weird feeling this was going to be a strange season. And it certainly is.

The GP series is certainly going to be interesting now IMO with the field more wide open in that there is a big opportunity for someone lesser known to break through.

I let out a gasp when I first read the news of Sasha withdrawing. I really hope that it's not serious. Too many injured skaters right now!

My condolences to Sasha Cohen, 🇳🇴

However, remembering the last time she injured her back, and subsequently had to skip 2001 Nationals, it was the best thing for her really. Because she came back with a vengeance the following season, after having rested her back for months, and thereafter captured her first sr. international medal at Trophee Lalique in the Fall of 2001 (bronze btw)! 👍 Thus, I see this as the best thing for her, to rest & recuperate for the next few months. Then be ready for 2005 Nationals. Or she might have to get a bye. JMHO.

Sasha & Michelle's unfortunate withdrawals leaves the door open for the next generation......to step through & to heighten their respective resumes & standing with the international judges......namely Miki Ando, whom will be making her sr. international debut on the grand prix. This is the perfect chance for her to show that she is the real deal, following her impressive sr. debut at 2004 Worlds. Btw, who else will be making their sr. debut on the international grand prix? Cynthia Phaneuf? Thanks in advance.

***Note: Carolina Kostner had an impressive showing last year, marking her sr. debut on the international grand prix with a silver medal at Cup of Russia (the only newcomer to do so btw)! It's rare for anybody to capture a medal their first time out the sr. grand prix ~ some notables who did so were Tara Lipinski, Sarah Hughes, Kristi Yamaguchi, Debi Thomas, Elaine Zayak, and Jennifer Kirk..***

Peace & Love, Nadine

P.S. Weird, I thought COP would make it easier for the skaters b/c the emphasis is no longer on jumps, but I suppose the ones that excel in the presentation area are trying to maintain that edge by going above & beyond. And the same can be said for those that excel in jumping, they too are at risk by doing the same in their area of expertise. But that's sport for you ~ higher, faster, stronger. May the best athlete win.

I was shocked when I first saw the news/links in MKF. Too many injuries.

Kwan, Cohen, Kirk all withdraw from GPs due to injury (back pain/). Better this year not next year. I'm wondering how long Japanese ladies body going to hold together with all those 3/3s, quad, 3A. Or may be they just skated through the pain.

Here is the hope Michelle and Sasha getting rest and return to National and Worlds 100%.

IMO, the TT had over trained Sasha for last two seasons.

 Another one bites the dust. This season is just getting awful for the US women. I don't think we will see all the Japanese ladies get through this season healthy either. Sasha's back has been a vulnerable spot for years. From that article it sounds like she has had problems with it since 2001 but not as serious as now. I hope she gets well soon. I doubt she'll do Cup of China as the doctor said 4 weeks with virtually no jumping. She might be back for the Winter Cheesefest. The good news is that she'll have more time to work on the choreography. I don't know if she's superstitious but Dark Eyes may be a jinx.

I agree with Nadine about Sasha being even more determined now. An injury will focus her more. With Worlds determining spots for the olympics this year I expect them to send Sasha and Michelle no matter what happens at Nats. As long as they are not seriously injured they are going as they can not risk sending the B team and lose spots.

This is a shock. I can't believe that once again in a year prior to the Olympics the US has so many injuries again. I remember at 2001 nationals when Sasha withdrerw due to backpain Michelle was suffering from minor backpain as well. That was the year so many other US skaters were injured as well such as Stellato and Nam.

Finally I do agree that Sasha will comeback even stronger as she did for the Olympic season in 2002.

It's a shame, but the stress these skaters go through in their training is excruciating. No wonder they injur themselves. I hope Sasha will recover soon.

I don't understand the last statement. If Sasha has an injury, why must the blame go to TT? Would you say Michelle's previous coach overtrained her and caused her injury?
