This reminds me of something a friend of mine was just saying about Broncos fans complaining about the quality of play even though they have won a game.

The shock probably came in when she made all those mistakes...not at the skaters who beat her. Seriously, I was watching that ESPN skating marathon and immediately after her freeskate she just seemed shell-shocked...couldn't even manage a smile (contrast that to Torino, where she seemed confident that she did the best she could given her "circumstances") afterward.
A repeat of her Nationals freeskate might very well have won Worlds.

I did hear from some skating buddies that Sasha didn't train much for Worlds and thougth it would be a cake walk for her since her major competitors weren't going to be there. I think she was quite shocked that she didn't win even with mistakes because she had before.

She did say herself that Slute/Arakawa pulling out had an effect on her decision to go. Had they gone I don't think she would have.
It's one of two things: she was completely burned out from the heavy-duty season, or she was ill-prepared (read: overconfident). If it's the former she should have just saved face and not gone at all. If it's the latter, I bet she's learned now. That's what happens when you're told you have so much talent and you are unbeatable when you're on.
I don't think the shock came from where she was placed, though. You can tell she was shocked immediately after she struck her final pose in the FS. I suspected she thought she'd have another "Torino skate" with maybe two falls/mistakes and then just gut the rest through. I tell you, looking back she was pretty darn lucky she messed up only two jumps there (and I think she knows this, too). Those practices looked rough. It could have been a lot worse, and I think she was banking on the same thing happening in Calgary, figuring it would be good enough to win. It didn't.
If anyone was going to pull out a SOHL it would have been Suguri or Rochette, not Meissner! That had to have stung even more.
You just don't ever underestimate your competition...never ever. This experience should teach her.
On that topic let's see what Kimmie does now that her main competitor is out. Hopefully she knows better and doesn't "phone it in". If she thinks it will be a walk-in-the park she risks struggling and just maybe Emily will pull out an SOHL and steal the win. Kim doesn't strike me as that type, though...she seems pretty hardworking. (I don't see any other lady doing so, although that doesn't mean it's impossible.)

I don't think Kimmie looks at Nationals as in the bag. Her last skate, at TEB was rough, and she doesn't want a repeat of that. Kimmie knows the USFS likes Emily and will give her high PCS scores, even if Emily makes mistakes.
And remember, last year Emily was 2nd behind Sasha going into the FS because Kimmie messed up the combo in the SP and was 4th. Kimmie is not one to underestimate the competition.

Totally agree Chuckum - At Skate America Kimmie was well behind after the SP and fought back, and brought herself up to second. She missed the GP Final after placing 2nd 3rd.
Emily was way off for a spot in the GPF. After placing 5th in Skate America, and then doing the best skate of her career SP in COR, she went kaplunk with the LP. There were no medals.
Beatriza and Christine Z placed 4th and 5th at NHK behind the asian fortress.
US Nats is still a big question but it seems Kimmie leads the pack.

Sasha should have passed on Worlds. I don't want to speculate on why she went but imo she was burnt out. Apparently she did not heed the skating mantra about competition and one that Kwan has used many times "Execute" or be "Executed".
I don't understand how people think Sasha was so burnt out. She withdrew from her first GP event, only skating in one, and did a cheesefest and Nationals before the Olympics And Wolrds which countless skaters also did. Kimmie had a full plate and so did Irina and Joannie and all the other girls there. Sasha htought she had it.

You can get burnt out from a number of things besides skating. Sasha was working the Red Carpet and the other girls were not.

Irina wasn't at worlds, presumably because of same burnout.
Oh, gee, the red carpet. SO tiring to pose and wear pretty dresses.

That's a really good point but what's the point of comparing different skaters' fatigue levels? Sasha was clearly running on empty at Worlds. She was weak from flu at Nationals, slightly injured at the Olympics (wrapped leg), and had been overtraining for months, according to Nicks. It does seem to me that she underestimated Kimmie and she probably shouldn't have gone to Worlds. I guess she was relying a little too much on her history of beating Kimmie. Still, to have another Worlds medal and to be able to add to her long record of consecutive podium finishes is pretty good!
Okay, it's established that Sasha will not be at Nationals.
Give it a rest already.
Let's see what Kimmie, Emily and the rest can or can't do.
I'll bet dimes to donuts that after the Nationals, people will still be nagging about how the "new" national champion would have beat Sasha. What does it matter?

I thought she got a bronze?
*Over* training? That's the first time I heard that one.
But Cohen had to think Kimmie was the least of her worries. Suguri was the only skater there who has beaten her in recent years, and Rochette was in her hometown. But even had Kimmie tanked, Suguri would still have beat her (Cohen).

RedDog???? Ouch. I think you underestimate how much energy that kind of activity takes as well as takes away from ice time. Not that I am saying it is "grueling" but it is an energy drain none the less.Word "dawg!":agree:
Not saying the RC is a cake walk but it sure has to be "relaxing" for someone like Cohen who's used to truly grueling skating training/schedules. The RC I bet is nothing compared to that.
The one thing I do agree with in your post is that it took away from ice time.
