Satoko Miyahara

I'm so happy her rehabilitation has gone well. Glad she is taking a break from the ice shows, although she is definitely missed!

Satoko will be competing at Finlandia Trophy, good luck satton :hap10:

Yes!! Finally I can see Satton skating again. Good luck Satton. Whatever the result, hopefully this can be a preparation for future competitions this season :hap10:

I might go to the Finlandia Trophy.

Does anyone have a link to a list of who else is going apart from Satoko?

For the full list of competitors, we have to wait until after the closing date for entries.

That date will be specified in the official competition announcement PDF, which hasn't been published yet...! But it's usually about a month before the competition starts ie. around the beginning of September. Once the closing date has passed, the entries will be published HERE.

In the meantime, we might find out a few of the competitors if federations or indvidual skaters reveal their intentions - like Japan federation has.

Be aware that there are usually several withdrawals or replacements by the time the competition starts, so it can be risky planning a trip if it's just to see one or two particular skaters.

Looking back at Finlandia entries for the last few years though - in my opinion it's always been a pretty good and interesting field, with representation from Russia, America, Canada, etc as well as Japan... and of course Finnish skaters, I have a soft spot for them :-D I've been to the last 5 Finlandia competitions, and never been disappointed. Ticket prices have soared in that time though, and I'm forgoing the official hotel this year, to save money... :-/

finally , an actual footage of her on ice!! i wonder if she will join any ice shows late in the summer, dont have high hopes for The Ice but maybe Shizuka's, otherwise waiting is gonna be too long :dbana:

This article says she started training on ice in May and started jumping again after 2-3 weeks. She feels like her physical strength is gradually coming back and she's been patiently making adjustments. She says Madama Butterfly is a famous opera but she wants to be able to make it her own, so that people can say "Miyahara's (Madama) Butterfly". She designed the costume for the program by herself.

She also did the step sequence of The Planets. Her new FS is Madama Butterfly choreographed by Tom Dickson. Tomorrow she's flying to Canada to get SP choreo.

I'm a little bit disappointed that she will not repeat The Planets (such an amazing program :sad21:) but I love her choice for next season and I'm looking forward to see her new work with Tom Dickson! They always create fantastic programs together

had no idea she was into designing (though i think her hernando's hideaway costume was her design too? or she was involved in making it) , now i am even more curious about the program and the costume :hap57:
and i see that some people dont like her music choice and wishes for her to bring The Planet back, which got me curious, which programs you would like to see her bring back? i really love both of her 2013-2014 programs and love to see her mature take on them :luv17:

I guess people were hoping for The Planets because repeating it falls into the 'not skated enough and to its full potential' side, but I am really looking forward to seeing her new programs because I know she'll do them beautifully. Wishing all the best to Satoko for a full recovery.

Yes, I wanted her to keep The Planets for this reason, but I also trust her and her team to deliver an new awesome FP. :)
I'm really curious for her SP, now.

The Planets is the only program I'd love to see back sometime. Miss Saigon was skated to its full potential several times. I think Madama Butterfly will be pretty similar to Miss Saigon and she has the age, the petite physique and the artistry to become Butterfly. It suits her.

Here's Satton's updated bio on JSF's website. Her height is 151cm now!

Comment: My withdrawal from the second half of the past season has caused worries. Your support has given me a lot of strength. I hope to take advantage of the various things that I experienced during the off season and show my new self. I’m grateful I’m able to stand on the ice in good health again, I will cherish each competition and give my utmost best.

Hobbies: Cooking, reading, window shopping, searching for music of my liking

Goal for the season: The Japanese Nationals and Olympic podiums

well, I was not there for quite some time, but want to thank you all for updates and photos:thank:

lately, while re-watching some of Satoko's programs/performances (and other Japanese skaters in general, e.g. Daisuke Takahashi, Akiko, Mao, Nobunari, Takahito Kozuka, Tatsuki Machida), I realized that with her (or Japaese skaters in general), the music choice is not that relevant for me as it seems with some other skaters. There is something very distinctive, stylish and 'pliant' in a way Satoko works with every music she used so far - for me, it is always a point of departure, a start point into story told by her performance, through her skating and expression, not the defining feature of her. There's that great mature sensibility about the music Satoko represents in my opinion, which makes every piece she's using a great platform for her skating - it is enhancing Satoko's skating, her presence, at the same time not losing its appeal musically.

I can understand the disappointment expressed over not using 'Planets' FS again - it was a beautiful, strong, powerful piece, but what is hard for me to comprehend is the amount of critic and personal conviction poured over 'Madame Butterfly' FS choice of music. As a FS viewer, my personal feeling about musical choices announced are pretty neutral until I see the final effect coming from skater - of course, I can say if some pieces chosen are unusual, rare to hear in FS, or opposite way - if some piece is a frequently used one. But the thing is for me - especially about those 'warhorse' pieces of music - that I decided some time ago to look at those programs with frequently used music as a potentially new dimention to be presented by particular skater and a 'challenge' for him/her to make the music and the program theirs, instead of compaining about 'warhorse' musical choice or straight away comparing the choice alone (which is an absurd thing itself lol) to others who used the music in the past. For me personally, it tells more abot people voicing such opinions than skaters who made those choices.

'Madame Butterfly' is a piece where Satoko will be able to use her experience already acquired, build on all she skated/learned and performed so far and add herself even more. The piece has a space to make up a story fitted to her personality and abilities, to make up a story she will be able to tell herself, not through other skaters who did the piece in the past. That's my opinion and I can't wait to see FS debut and how it will grow during the season.
