Satoko Miyahara

She withdrew from the world championships and Rika Hongo replaced her. This would make it extremely difficult for Japan to maintain the three slots for the next Olympics. Satoko Miyahara performs her full free program in ice shows without skipping difficult jumps, which may have worsened her conditions in the past few months.

“I have been gradually increasing the amount of training and making adjustments, but I continue to feel pain so I decided to pull out. I will concentrate on treatment so that I can make a full recovery next season.”

I already expressed my sadness over Satoko's withdrawal from Worlds, but want to pop there to give lots of :ghug::ghug: to Satoko, her team and fans there, especially wonderful ioanna, so dedicated and passionate over Satoko, her skating, career and fierce supporter, but keeping it real (if you know what I mean, just like Satoko herself - great, but down to earth and humble beyond imagination).

I hope that all this difficult time, the time of challenge for Satoko will be an opportunity to reborn to re-energize for Olympic season, to build on her already acquired experience, all successes and failures and focus on her health, her physical and mental state going forward, because she is the most important person there. I wish she would heal as much as possible and enter a new season with lots of positivity and fresh approach. No doubt she is capable of great things, despite all those problems now.

I was thinking of sending Satoko a get well card. Does anyone know how to possibly send things like that to skaters, or someone who can give them to skaters?

Wow, thank you. I don't deserve the shoutout as much as Satoko does but thank you.

A Japanese fan was receiving letters from fans in February and they made a book for her birthday (March 26). Other than that I guess the only way to contact her is through JSF...

Hi everyone, I just want to say that I share your sadness that we won't see Satoko at worlds.

I have a question: I've consistently loved Satoko's outfits and I was wondering if her hairpiece for planets was sold in the regular commerce?

:ghug:

sometimes, especially in moments like this - difficult for us, difficult for Satoko - I feel like the phrase and appreciation should be directed also to Satoko's fans, those most devoted and passionate ones who are strong in their support - because of Satoko's uniqueness and for her as a skater and a person she is.

I'm always full of grateful feelings and admiration towards people like You - so engaged into support of particular skater (from which I share my sympathy too:)), determined to bring the skater closer to other people or/and opposite - bring others to Satoko's skating and beyond that. This thread is always full of positivity, great memories and information of Satoko, for me there's always something special to read, to watch or to appreciate in her, not only as a skilled skater, athlete, but also as a very humble, hard-working and poised person.

Satoko's supporters seem to be fully aware of Satoko's strenghts, but also her areas of improvement, like herself and that's in my opinion is what makes her supporters/admirers strong and positive - this ability to be confident what makes her strong and what makes her work two times harder than before, that's the real power of Satoko, glad there are many people who see that behind all this common talk on size of her jumps etc.

Her team has watched her closely, and she decided not to risk it. Though she was the best hope for the 3 Olympics spots, if going to World would have made things worse (like it did for Yuzu last year) then it wouldn't have been worth it for her. I really hope she'll make a full recovery. I know it's still far away, but I wonder if she'll go to WTT... it's not mandatory for her since she's injured, so maybe she'll skip it?

But back on Worlds, I'm very worried on what it could mean for the 3 lady spots... only Mai has been consistent this season, but Satoko's absence will add even more pressure on Wakaba, Rika and her. I really hope they'll be able to deliver when it counts. Rika did last year, in Boston, after a rocky season... Gambare ladies!

She basically said "see you next season" so I seriously doubt it.

I am very bummed that I will not see her until next season starts (please correct me if i am wrong though as I might not be very well versed on when on or off season periods were :) )

Although I really commend her bravery to take necessary action to prioritize her health. Instead of forcing herself and worsen her injuries that adversely affect her performance, which can then potentially hurt her psychologically, it's good for her and her team to focus on full recovery. Better to take two steps back now for more steps forward later, especially when Olympics season will soon begin. Speedy recovery to Satton and come back full force. I really really hope she keeps her FS next season.

Perhaps I am wrong but i personally felt that Satton was often taken for granted by many who often seem to underappreciate her achievements or some who even claimed she was disposable and only bidding her time as a temporary filler for the next superstar. Now that she has to withdraw, I feel that her absence was intensely felt in the plan for maintaining three Olympics spots, which to me highlight the sometimes forgotten fact that she carries the heaviest burden and expectation among the current promising skaters (I am not saying that it is confirmed Wakaba, Mai, and/or Rika will not deliver. I am just pointing out what my observation on reactions of many toward Satton's withdrawal news on the expectations for team JPN to maintain). Seems to me, at least, The heightened worries when it was official that she withdrew suggested that maybe more and more people start to see and/or acknowledge how important Satoko Miyahara (without belittling other skaters) to the current success of her country figure skating.

It's unfortunate that sometimes people only realise what a blessing they have only when they almost lose it. Okay, this might be too intense in this case, although this applies to many things in life. My main point is, she is often taken for granted. hopefully, when she return from this trying time in her skating career (and may she return even better), doubters can finally appreciate her more.

Just my two cents folks. No ill intention or offense please. :)

Satoko Miyahara, who is missing the World Championships due to a hip stress fracture, will stay off ice for a month concentrating on rehabilitation. In her quick preparation for the World Championships, the pain caused by the injury had gotten worse. As her goal remains the Olympic Games next year in February, she’s planning on doing light off-ice training such as walking and physical strengthening to heal the affected hip.

This is Fuji TV's Worlds promotional poster, with Satoko.

I hope that this is long enough. She can probably skate after a month, but jumping very likely isn't a good idea then. No painkillers. Stress fractures are hard to diagnose and if she isn't patient it can't heal properly. And then everything starts from zero again. They have to try to understand why it happened in the first place. She'll probably not be allowed to do the number of runthroughs she did in the past, even when the stress fracture is fully healed.
This is going to be very tough for her, we all know that she always wants to improve. I hope that she'll find some great intellectual challenge to keep her busy going through this.

I don't think she needed the exaggerated number of runthroughs in the first place (her practice time was twice as longer as Marin's according to coach Hamada)... it's a sad situation but I hope it will also be a lesson for the future. Maybe she can work on speed and steps before she'll be allowed to jump again.

Satoko gave an interview earlier this month. She talked about her free skate.

Her wish was to polish her interpretation skills because she finds her FS challenging. She's especially paying attention to the step sequence. Now that her season is over, her words give me hope that she'll keep this program next year.

Her FS program is a masterpiece and is the very best ladies program this season for me, so yeah, I wish she keeps the majestic program for the Olympics.

This FS and a new SP choreographed by Tom Dickson is all I wish for next season.
