Interesting to note the difference in Irina's TES from Japan International until now. She really knows how to work the max points out of a program.

Her base value went up from 55.8 to 57.8. At both comps, she squeezed a little extra out of the program by having 4 of the 7 jumping passes after te 2 minute mark. At Japan, she got 1 L4, 2, L3, 2 L2, and 1 L1 on non-jumps. This time, she got 4 L4, 1 L3 and 1L1. Just at a cursory glance, it sure looks like the higher levels are garnering a tad more GOE. Not sure that it SHOULD be that way (or even really if it "is" that way....Mathman??) but it's working for Irina. While she didn't do any 3/3's, she maxed the number of jumps / combinations with a 3/2/2, a 3/2 and a 3/2.

Comparing that to Arakawa, who I adore. Shiz needs to really, really work on her jumps. Her 3F in the short was called a 2F. Her attempted 3/3 in the long was called a 3/2. I'm assuming the 2R in the LP was an attempted 3R but downgraded. This is a huge problem since under-rotated jumps not only lose base value but get whacked with -GOE. She had 2L4 non jumps and 4L3. I would guess she might look to upgrade 1 or 2 of those. She also only got credit for 2 combos, so maybe a better jump strategy for her would be to forget attempting 3/3's and work on a 3/2/2 and two 3/2's.

Love the score sheets!! Can't wait for MM's remarks.

Inoe & Badlwin's Throw Triple Axel (Fall) - 6.3 Points

Looking at the first 3 Grand Prix Pairs Event, I noticed that Inoe & Baldwin's throw triple axel received the highest score of any throws in all 3 competitions! This is surprising to me since they fell on this element and got -3 across the board. Because the element was received extra credit for being in the latter half of the program, they only received a -2.00 deduction.

At first I was trying to find a couple who had a clean throw double axel to compare their score with Inoe & Baldwin's fall on a triple axel. But I realized I didn't need to when even all the clean throw triple sal and throw triple toe didn't earn as much points.

I say, bring on the quad throws! Would this be good advice to all the pairs out there? I don't see any drawbacks except for not having a clean program and as a result possibly a lowered PCS score. However, clean programs seem unnecessary with this new scoring system.

4 double loops for Mao?

Ok didn't Mao have four double loops in that program? And aren't you supposed to only be able to repeat a jump twice? Why did she get credit for all four? Maybe one of the CoP experts can shed some light on this for me.

P.S. WOW look at Irina's levels!

The Zayak rule only applies to triples not doubles. You can do as many doubles as you want within the 7 jumping passes.

No, that was actually really just a double. She kind of weirdly opened up the loop after 2 rotations and it looked wonky.

But generally she does sometimes have trouble with the rotation of her triples. I think sometimes she just doesn't get proper spring on the take-off (noticed that on lutzes and flips especially ) for whatever reason and then the jumps end up being low and not properly rotated. I hope she can fix that.

Thanks for the clarification. I was awake / sleeping at the wrong times and missed the live coverage. But of course I'm busy downloading the videos!! Thanks for clarifying the 2R.

Mao doesn't do 3T and 3S. In the JGP she got dinged for toe-axeling 3Ts / 2Ts on her combinations so she does loops instead. I don't know about the 3S. Maybe she's working on a 4S?

Navka/Kostomarov got 9s on their "Carmen" FD. I guess by Torino some of those 9s will be 10s.

Slightly off-topic but seriously? Carmen? Could they have picked a more been there, done that music selection? Of all the music in all the world......

True, but they're supposedly doing a "different" interpretation of Carmen-one that emphesizes the romance instead of the drama.

And not to mention, NavKos' version of Carmen features Navka blowing kisses into the audience. ;)

The GOE needs to be reworked

I believe that if any body gets -3 across the board they should end up with no points, as if they never attempted the element. Points should be earned not given. The GOE should be multiplied to a third of the base value and then added to the base value. Example 4T + 3T is 13.0 if one get-3's 13/3 x -3 = -13+13=0 or 13/3 x 1 = 4.33+13= 17.33 We might see less skaters risking for level of difficulty but the quality shall improve in order to win.
