Senior Ladies LP

If Ashley goes to 4CC, there's no reason for her to go to JW. 4CC has higher ISU ranking points.

Alissa is a beautiful LADIES skater, and I am glad she won.

However...I'm miffed about the blatant favoritism and gushing over Alissa by the commentators...when Rachel did a solid program (not artistic at all...but). Really not sportsmanlike. It was almost like a kick her in the teeth, throw her under the truck type attitude.

I like IceNetwork's commentary better...although Nancy always gushes over Evan. (Gush gush gush over everything Evan did...and all she can say about Jeremy was he had solid jumps)

Just give me the Eurosport guys.

Here we go.

Another season and we have a champion who should not be the champion. This is the type of thing that is destroying figure skating. The judging here when you compare apples to apples between Flatts and Ciszny just doesn't compare. You have one skater who skates clean, has a triple triple and a nicely put together performance versus another who has a clear fall, lower difficulty but an equally nice put together performance and the one with the fall wins the event.

I'm sorry but this was Rachel Flatts victory that was clearly stolen by blind judges. I can't stand skating lately and in fact this is probably the 2nd event I've watched on tv this season. I barely watch it anymore lately due to junk like this. I guess Flatts is gonna have to get plastic surgery to make herself look like Nancy Kerrigan in order to get high presentation scores in order for her to win a national champsionship, eh?

Skating isn't all about the jumps.

How about this? Alissa goes to Worlds, that's the rules. Send Rachael, Caroline and Ashley to 4 Continents and let them fight it out in front of international judges to see who gets the 2nd spot at Worlds.

I really, really hope Ashley's season isn't over. I'd like to see her at least once more. I'd like to see her get 4CC.

Can't wait for this to be on-demand so I can see her. IMO, she and Alissa are the most mature skaters we have right now. I see so much potential in Ashley, I think she's got a good future ahead of her.

ETA: I like Polymer Bob's idea.

2nd Edit: I was curious as to why the commentators never brought up Caroline's growth spurt and tendonitis earlier in the season, but they talked about Mirai's quite often.

I have to agree with you. It was so obvious who they favored. I would have preferred someone like P J Wong.

You mean Rachael should get a set of giant teeth implant?
Sorry, but the quality of Alissa's performance was immensely superior to any other's, and even international judges agreed by awarding her higher pcs.
You could also tell by audience reaction whose performance moved them, made them rise from the seats. Under CoP, artistry isn't measured by how many triples you land.

And of all the people, Ashley in third from the last group won the LP! WHat a strong spirit girl!
Ashley Wagner, Strong Spirit Girl!

I was very torn. I wanted Ashley to get bronze but everyone kept skating well and deserved their scores. But Ashley won the FP and Alissa is champ and Mirai was overjoyed and Caroline got bronze and Joelle and Katrina skated clean and Rachael got silver... it was a happy night.

I have to say I did NOT want Rachael to win. She was too dull. She seems to have regressed in musicality, if that's possible. But she deserved her medal.

Sigh, if I want to watch a pretty "performance" I'll watch the Ice Capdes. Figure skating is a SPORT. And so the Jumps DO matter. Alissa's skate was the weakest skate to win a National title, in a LONG, LONG, LONG, LONG, time. Debbie Thomas could have beaten her.

And then you have Flatt who landed 7 triples including a 3/3. She may not be as pretty as Alissa is, but well that should matter..

The fact is Alissa would not have gotten those kind of PCS (and might have even gotten a downgrade) if she had been skating internationally...

Flatt may be boring and Flatt, but she's the best skater in the US, and has been some for awhile now, and deserves that credit.

If you saw the look when the panned to Dorothy Hamilton it was one of "what?"

I would agree. Last year Flatt had much better choreography (gee, thanks Lori Nichol). I love Rachael Flatt and I hope she goes to worlds and kicks ***, and hope she comes back next year with a better program.

Some of you folks forget - Alissa was 5 points ahead of Rachael after the short. Look, I would have been happy with either girl winning. But Alissa's spins were considerably better as was her overall performance, the "Big Picture". As some of you have said, jumps aren't the whole picture.

I say, send these two to Worlds, don't break either's heart, they both deserve to go.

Alissa's three-triple program:
3z 2t
3f
3r
sit spin
2a 2t
3z fall
2t 2l
spirals
2a
Someone was saying she had 4 triples. I count three clean ones, not including the 3Z she fell on. And someone FSU said that her first 3Z looked a little tight. I don't know, I'll have to watch it myself later.

Alissa may have good quality on her elements, but her TES is a good 6-8 points lower than Ashley, Rachael, and Caroline, and her PCS is 6-7 points higher. Only Mao, Yu-na, and sometimes Carolina & Joannie get PCS in the range of 60 points (what Alissa got today). In her 2nd-place FS and bronze-medal winning skate at SC, Alissa got only 52 for her PCS. Caroline in her TEB FS, which was very similar to today's (all clean except for downgraded 3-3; actually, she got both triples downgraded in the combo there, and probably here only on one), was 49 (52 here). I think the "extra" inflation of Alissa's PCS is obvious. USFSA clearly made up its mind beforehand to send Alissa to World's.

Nah, Rachael's earned her way to Worlds -- good solid scores at home and abroad, so to speak. Solid time after time. We've got the mercurial Alissa, so let the second spot go to a solid, steady performer.

Scott looked at the slo-mos and seemed to think Caroline URed at least 2 jumps, wasn't it? But the judges must not have thought so, given her score -- but of course we'll have to check protocols. However, though I like Caroline very well, tonight she seemed to skate with about zero expression. Even with her wonderful Ave Maria, she seemed very bland to me tonight.

Wagner is much improved in maturity but I actually didn't find her skate tonight that mesmerizing, and was surprised when she won the free skate. Guess I'm just getting more and more out of touch with what is a winning performance anymore.

I enjoyed Rachael all the way through although she is not a "wow" skater. But for me, not unemotional -- just a different, quieter emotion. I did think her LP last year had a bit more emotion overall, as well as more emotional nuance, but still tonight was a great skate.

Really enjoyed Musademba and Gilles. Fun to watch! Both beautiful and very mature-looking on the ice, especially given their young ages.

Mirai showed true fight to me, starting in tears, then giving an enjoyable performance. Beauty in the eye of the beholder and all that, but I don't see at all that she's just trying to be cutesy on the ice anymore, as some posters have said. I think she presented a nice look and style that was not too juniorish at all to me, very suitable to her age, and the program managed to have some different moods to it, which is becoming rarer as skaters pretty much skate to music that stays at a loud and "grand" level all the time, with no shadings in mood or dynamics (I think that's one real problem I have with Ashley's programs, they all seem to start, continue, and end at the same emotional level, so to speak, but whatever).

Czisny's program was nice and the crowd was very, very behind her, but first?? Hmm.
