Senior Ladies LP

Caroline got edge calls on both flips and the lutz in the LP. I'm really surprised. I don't think she's ever gotten edge calls on her flips before, and her flips look the same as they always did, certainly through this GP season. What's going on with this tech panel?
I have been asking myself the very same thing.

The edge-calls seem to be all over the place, Mirai also got edge calls for the Flip - wasn't she a flutzer? On the other hand Wagner didn't get any edge-call at all.

Love Flatt, loved her program, loved the way she skated it, think she wuzrobbed, and if she doesn't get the Worlds berth, I'm done with this sport. But then again, I'm only on page 16.

I think Alissa should go to 4CC. We need to see how international judges like her 4 triple program.

She only did 3 triples. She attempted 5 (doubled one and fell on the other). I love Alissa, but she should not have won with that performance. She was dissapointed herself in the way she skated.

Exactly, the look on her face says it's it all. And if you look at let's say how Mirai was scored who landed more triples than Alissa, has just as good of spins and footwork, and is a better basic skater than Alissa.. And got 7 points less than Alissa.

This was the USFSA playing favorites. I'm not sure why the others even bothered to lace their skates up. It was clear that as long as Alissa landed 3 triples (and who know it could have been two one was perhaps underrotated) and did a clean short, that Alissa was going to win.

It was also clear that it didn't matter what anyone else did Flatt was going to go to Worlds, because she's the "work horse" the USFSA wants to rely on. Count on Flatt, but give her a championship she deserves, heck no.

These kind of results are why the public doesn't take Figure skating seriously as a sport.

I just want to add that I'm very proud of Kristine Musademba (11th)! She looked regal out there - very secure and lovely. She'll be fabulous next year.

Yes!! Kristine was one of the young new Seniors that just impressed the heck out of me last night. Very much enjoyed her and her program. Looking forward to seeing how Kristine progresses over the next few years. :)

Oh and icedancedevotee? You didn't offend me at all w/your post and it was dead on!! Thank you for your post.

For anyone who saw the Protocols....Did Mirai get dinged for her one obvious flutz last night? I was shocked that on the replay after her skate that neither Scott or Sandra pointed it out. Then again, it was a pretty obvious flutz that maybe they thought they didn't need to point it out. Anyway...Just wondering. :)

A triple with a fall is still a triple jump but I'm still seeing her loop as short.

And not only did Alissa get credit for the loop she got 1 point of GOE for it, all of her GOE on the jumps are way higher than she normally gets internationally.

Someone described it pretty well in the edge call thread, so I'll just quote her.

I was about to come post about this but decided to go back and watch Caroline's flip again. The mule kick causes her to flip to a very clear outside edge. Though she flips back to the inside for takeoff, it really is just before takeoff. I think that's what the ! is for in her case -- the jump is on an outside edge at a time when it shouldn't be. I haven't watched the others in slow-mo, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a similar case.

I agree - I noticed that her edges are all over the place right when she does the mule kick.

Here's her SP from nationals in which the wobbly edges are pretty obvious just as she goes in for the mule kick:

I'm watching the delayed west-coast broadcast. When they showed a close-up of Rachael Flatt in the K&C, I realized that she already has wrinkles around her eyes! I can't believe she's only 16.

I said the same thing about Rachael. She skated and looked a lot older then she is. But I think its her skin tone. Her skin looks very pale and delicate.

Back to skating, I hope Alissa & Rachael skip 4CC. Let Alissa do her collegiat stuff. She needs some time to rest before worlds. Rachael need to rework those boring programs before she puts us all to sleep.

It would be smart for them to actually go to 4CC - competition in the Olympics Venue before the Games... they won't have that chance again until the Games, and going there to practice for a week (as some skaters probably will) sometime during the next year won't be the same as actually doing a competition in the Venue. Rest is good, but so is what is essentially a Pre-Olys Olys.

Funny how last year Caroline skated to the same music and landed the same jumps and everyone was in tears. me too. this year she seemed to ignore the music and changing the layout of the last two jumps messed up some of the musical ques. I am very sad that she did not make worlds though. it would have been so nice to see either her or Mirai there. Guess it was not to be.
I agree with most of you about Alissa. I was happy for her, but not skating perfectly, after so many other girls did kinda ruined it a little.
Bebe completely fell apart. what a difference a year makes.

I don't get it. For years, i can remember people being upset that the jumping beans won over the artistic skater, and when finally it's the opposite, people are still griping. Oookay.

I said very much the same to myself last night.

I guess that's what the skating fandom truly is all about... *sigh* you can't please anyone any of the time.

Sometimes i can't believe what i've been hearing (reading?) in this thread. Many of you are complaining because a beautiful 21 year old lady won the title with excellent spins and spirals over a 16 year old jumper? And that finally (for once) artistry is being rewarded over only sheer atheticism?
Am i understanding this correctly?

More people would be happy for her if she won last year. However, this is 2009 and everyone wants three spots for the Olympics. And it's usually the jumping beans who have the better result at Worlds/

Well, Caroline still got a standing ovation in the stadium, and apparently the biggest one according to eye witnesses. Maybe it only appeared lacklustre to those of us who saw it last year with fresh eyes, and who knew how even more soulfully she can skate to it.

Thank you for feeling the same way

we don't really have any other jumping beans to rely on:
Ashley blew her chance in the SP even though she came roaring back in the free
Mirai, Caroline are prone to URs.
Rachael is going even is she is NOT the champion.

I don't know what else USFSA should do. and i personally think Alissa has turned a corner in consistency and could do ok at worlds, maybe enough to place in the top 10. Rachael, if she skates consistently which is very likely, could place top 10 too.

Who can beat them?
Mao
Yu Na
Carolina
Joannie
^^ those they will have trouble beating
Fumie
Miki
Laura
Susanna
Sarah??? She's a total unknown at this point
^^^They are hardly invincible. If Rachael can beat a few of those, and Alissa maybe one, they have a great shot at 3 spots.

Also, we should be thanking our lucky stars that Yukari is NOT going and that European skating is weak.

Thanks for telling me that Kiira isn't going.
