( I hope Sandhu retires after this season.Looking at Jeff's detailed results, he seemed to skate really well. No negative GOE on any jumps, so he must not have messed anything up besides the popped single axel. No 3-3s, but it's okay b/c it's his first competition in a while and it's just nice to see him be solid and not fall. Perhaps the time off at the start of the season was good and refreshing for him and his jumps. I was surprised to see his straight line footwork only recieve a Level 2, though. I didn't see it and I don't know if that's fair, but hopefully he'll step that up for Worlds because Takahashi and Oda get so many Level 4's on spins and footwork.

Jeff...
Jeff deserved to win the title. He skated very well and landed 7 triples. However, I was surprised that the judges did not give him -GOEs on some of his jump elements, as they were a little shaky (3flip-2toe combination and 3salchow). I get that this is the Nationals, but does that mean the judges should ignore all that they'd been taught about scoring?

What a great night of men's skating! Buttle was incredible! I believe his score was reported to be a Canadian record. His axel was rock solid--the time off and the time he has put in retraining the jumps seems to have made a difference. Now he needs to carry this over to Worlds.
Mabee was great and won the silver based on his short program results. Hopefully he too can continue with his success and the 4 Continents and Worlds.
Sandu...as usual, unbelievable....in that he can come back after the disaster in the short and put together such a strong program! I had written him off, believing some of the posts here and elsewhere that it was time for Skate Canada to take him off the world team. However, why has he not invested in some world class choreography? We have such a wealth of talented choreographers in our country, I don't understand why his programs are not closer to the level of Buttle's or even Sawyer's as far as choreography goes.
Sawyer has to be disappointed. Will this be the extra motivation needed to master a consistent triple axel and develop some quads?
Also glad to see Chan make the climb up the ladder. Imagine if he had not stumbled so in the short program...that would have been some final group!

I loved Jeff's new program and his performance. I know he can do alot better in jumps though, he can do that second triple axel, add a triple-triple for sure. He landed some of his jumps high on the toe too tonight. His footwork and spins look like they could be upgraded too. He can do better at Worlds but good start here. He is definitely a player for Worlds IMO.
Sandhu landed most of his jumps but his spins and footwork are going down the drain in quailty. So slow and weak, his spins and footwork used to be among the best, now they are no good at all. Mabee had a couple mistakes but I agreed with the judges keeping him in 2nd over Sandhu. I felt Sawyer was underscored, his PC scores should have beaten both Mabee and Sandhu, probably he just had too many jump mistakes over the 2 programs.
I hope Sandhu retires after this year. It sucks to have to leave 1 of Mabee or Sawyer at home to send some stupid has been to Worlds to come 12th or something, and we have so many good up and comers after that, just leave Sandhu so we can send all 3 of those guys and build for the future, your best days are behind you, your 3rd place finish here should prove that. He is so slow and boring now, his spins and footwork arent any good anymore, and he often misses a bunch of jumps. His music and costume are horrable and he is just a has been and I am dissapointed he made the team at all.

#5 - I absolutely LOVED Jeff's new program to the Armenian music. I think this will become a signature program for him, just as Casablanca did for Kurt. It has the same "character" appeal. Tracy Wilson said that it's the most physically demanding program in the world, because of all the full body work and intricacies. I really hope he changes his costume for worlds though. Hated the 1/2 sleeves and the mock turtle-neck look underneath.

I dont agree. His results could cause him to retire. He probably will finish out of the top 10 at Worlds this year, unless he skates really well in both programs and some other guys dont skate their best. He also is now dropped to 3rd in Canada and there is a great shot with the other guys improving he wont make the World team next year. So what will the point in him staying that long be, he will have a hard time even making it to the next Olympics if he stays, he is dropping down both in Canada and internationaly and rightfully so.
I was unsure about Jeff's costume until the program started, then it grew on me. What a GORGEOUS program. The music choice and intricacy reminded me of his Naqoyqatsi program (though more intricate). I loved it. Both of his programs this year are absolutely amazing.
Chris was awesome. Not perfect by any means, but based on his rockin' performance in the short and his good performance in the long, he deserved his silver. I think he was placed correctly in the long program, but his short was just so awesome.
Emanuel - what a comback and what a fight! I could tell he was pissed at his score and at being 25 points behind Jeff overall. But he was very shaky on a lot of jumps. Turns out and definite fighting. While Jeff wasn't flowy on some landings, he didn't have to fight for them like Emanuel did.
Poor Shawn though - he had a great skate! And yay for Patrick Chan! I think that kid is amazing!
Best moment of the night though, Jeff sneaking up behind and tapping Chris on the back to get his attention and the 2 of them hugging. So great to see 2 such great friends just so genuinely happy for each other. And that tap was just too cute.
Emanuel is going to be pissed though and will think that he deserved silver. This is the lowest he's ever been at Canadians (winning 3 times and finishing 2nd only to Elvis and Jeff). Hopefully it will motivate him for Tokyo.

I also noticed that, do you know why? I mean how his spins and footwork can degenerate into such status in one year is beyond me. Do you think it may have something to do with the choreography ?

Jeff scored 153.98 on his long program and 232.83 overall. In the Kiss'n'Cry he said, ,"Oh, so close" when he saw his score come up. Was he trying to beat the world record? What is the world record for long program and overall? I assume Plushenko set it?

I honestly think he isnt training nearly enough anymore. I hear things about modeling he does and other stuff, and he isnt training enough anymore. That combined with age. Spins and footwork you have to train alot to keep up the quality, jumps in a way you can go by memory even a bit more then spins and footwork.
I also think his choreography is alot of slower moving motions and alot of posing parts now and that tends to make you slower in your elements too. His choreography has gotten a bit worse each year the last few years, and his programs this year were the ultimate stinker IMO.

He was probably dissapointed he barely missed his 154.30 PB in the long program set at the Olympics.

I do believe Buttle will be right in the running for a medal at Worlds especialy if Lambiel is out of Worlds as I am starting to guess he is. He will be right up there with Joubert, Oda, and Takahashi fighting for a medal then, and Lambiel of course if he skates. Sandhu and Mabee will have a hard time being in the top 10 at Worlds though. If they finish 9th or 10th at Worlds it will be a great result for them. I am so happy Mabee made it and hope he finishes over Sandhu at Worlds again, although neither will be in the top 7 or 8 for sure.
Yes, because Mabee and Sawyer are locks for top 10. Please tell me the last time Sawyer actually landed a triple Axel cleanly? While these guys are decent they are not at the level of Sandhu yet and therefore he deserves every opportunity to go to Worlds. Mabee earned his opportunity as well. I'd rather send the guy who has a shot at the podium then someone who has a very slim chance at the top 10. Buttle and Sandhu both have a shot at the podium, although Buttle has more of a chance .
While I'm proud of all the guys, please wake me up when the quad starts being a requirement to win Nationals.

Sandhu a shot at the podium this year. ROOTTFFFLLLL!!! You are nuts if you think Sandhu has any shot of a medal at Worlds this year. Lambiel, Joubert, Lysacek, Takahashi, Oda, Buttle, he doesnt have a prayer in hell of beating anyone of those guys unless they have a disaester or something. Sandhu has never been higher then 5th at Worlds and now that he is a has been who is going down he has a medal chance, you are in lala land my friend. Sandhu is going downhill, he is going downhill internationaly, you look at his protocals in his GP events they show this, he has now dropped to 3rd at Canadians. Mabee almost tied Sandhu's PC scores in the free skate with mistakes, and his strength isnt even PC scores, and Sandhu's PC scores were 9 full points below Buttle with a very good skate.
Sandhu is in the same boat Mabee or Sawyer would be at Worlds this year, no shot at top 5 or 6, and not a lock for the top 10. Maybe low top 10, maybe out of top 10, that is it. Medal contender at Worlds this year, Sandhu, hahah, you made my day with that laugher. Sawyer and Mabee are now in the same level as Sandhu, and Sandhu's level is well below that elite 6 or so in the World, his days of being up with that group are in the past.

Buttle-amazing performance, although the jumps will need to be better at Worlds. However his triple axel that he did was one of the best I have ever seen him do. I love the new programs, especialy the long.
Mabee-well deserved silver medal. Great quality jumps, just a couple of missed ones tonight, very entertaining and crowd pleasing number. Sandhu outskated him tonight but not by enough to warrant a switch form the short program results where Mabee so far outskated Sandhu.
Sandhu-well deserved comeback bronze. Landed alot of jumps, very gutsy to do both the quad and triple axel to open after bad short program. His skating, spins, and footwork are definitely on the decline now, his age is starting to show and the program overall was boring. Worlds will likely be his swan song, hopefully he goes out with a nice top 10 finish.
Saywer-wonderful skater to watch, sadly misses out on Worlds since he wasnt able to keep pace with the jumping standard of Mabee. Really needs to rework his triple axel and some of his other jumps to get back in it.
