Thanks everyone for sharing so many links, photos and videos! It was an exciting weekend and I'm so proud of him. Congratulations Shoma, you're a fighter!

Well, if I could make a wish for free, I do of course have a few wishes, but if I had a real wish for free in relation to figure skating, I would've made a request to Shoma Uno, please show us your free skate from Canada once more, because this was really a masterpiece again, and he fell two times! The memory of that is gone, because everything else was really that incredibly amazing, it took our socks off!

So, he really conquers the hearts of figure skating like a storm, rather, he does not, he already did!

Sometimes he still seems so fragile, because he's not the tallest one, but what he shows on the ice, there he is one of the Greatest. There ain't many who are greater than him, at the moment. He was seven points behind Keegan Messing after the short program, but he painted another picture and then drove everyone else onto the wall, also with a new score, with 227, 25!

Tja, wenn ich einen Wunsch frei hätte, ich hab ein paar Wünsche natürlich immer noch, aber wenn ich einen wirklichen Wunsch frei hätte was Eiskunstlaufen betrifft, dann hätte ich jetzt Shoma Uno gebeten, zeig' uns doch bitt'schön nochmal die Kür von Kanada, denn das war wirklich wieder ein Meisterstück, auch er ist zweimal gestürzt! Das ist schon im Gedächtnis nicht mehr da, weil alles andere war derartig wahnsinnig gut, das hat uns wirklich von den Socken gerissen.

Also er erobert wirklich die Herzen der Eiskunstlaufens im Sturm, vielmehr, er tut das nicht, er hat es schon längst getan.

Manchmal wirkt er noch so zerbrechlich, weil er jetzt auch nicht der Größten einer ist, aber was er auf dem Eis zeigt, da ist er schon einer der ganz Großen. Da gibt es nicht viele Größere, im Augenblick als ihn. Er hatte 7 Punkte Rückstand auf Keegan Messing nach dem Kurzprogramm, aber das hat er im Anstreichen natürlich wett gemacht und hat dann alle anderen ordentlich an die Wand gefahren, mit auch einer neuen Punktzahl, mit 227,25.

He was so spent at the end of the Free.
But he did so well we are proud of you Shoma.
Honestly our top men are really struggling with the 4min free however they are not called the top men for nothing :cool14:
Just keep healthy Shoma, looking forward in seeing you at the GPF.

S(igi Heinrich): And for me personally, I look forward to Shoma Uno! That's logical!

H(endryk Schamberger): Exactly, this will be today's highlight. Ah, I'm excited to see what his form is like. If he can skate to the confident victory here, one should expect from him.

Warm up

S: In this group the second to last skater is Shoma Uno from Japan.

H: And he is the big favourite - everything but first place would be a huge surprise.

Start

S: So, now we look forward to the little whirlwind from Nagoya. Shoma Uno.

3A Fall

S: That suited the music.

H: Hehe, yes. But it didn't fit his concept, for sure.

S: No.

S: This can cost the Grand Prix Final already. That happens pretty quickly. I just took a glance at the NHK Trophy, where he will start next, and the field is doable for him. He can win there. And here he won't win.

H: Well, at least he won't win the short program. But...

S: The free.

H: Exactly!

He will stay within reach to beat Keegan Messing, and I believe he will get three or four more points for the program components, right now he is behind by six points, with the fall that makes seven. Still this is a sensational result for Keegan Messing, here in front of a home crowd, to leave the vice World Champion behind, that's a grenade!

S: But the fall wasn't the only insecurity, he got deductions for the combination and not just a few.

H: And, uhm, he didn't land the axel backwards either. This is not the first time he has problems with the Axel, this happened a few times before, every quadruple worked, but the Axel didn't. Nevertheless one has to say, his base value is the highest, compared to Keegan Messing he DID show two Quads, the first one the flip was flawless.

S: So now we look forward to the program component score, it could be around 55...uh, program component not 55, 45.....

H: Not as many

S: Ah, 43....

H: Oh he did not....

S: Yes....

H: ...did not come out unscathed. Seven points behind Keegan Messing, that's hard to catch up to. Just one hundredth of a point in front of Junhwan Cha, but this just of secondary importance, the placement is important. Keegan Messing is the biggest surprise of the evening.

H: Und er ist natürlich hier der große Favorit. Alles andere als ein klarer Sieg wäre eine faustdicke Überraschung.

3A Sturz

S: Das hat musikalisch gepasst.

H: Hehe, ja. Aber sonst hat es ihm sicherlich nicht ins Konzept gepasst.

S: Nein.

S: Das kann schon das Grand Prix Finale gekostet haben. Das geht dann relativ schnell. Ich habe mir mal ganz kurz einen Überblick verschafft über die NHK Trophy wo er wieder starten kann, und das Umfeld, das kann er packen. Das kann er gewinnen. Und hier gewinnt er nicht.

H: Naja, zumindest das Kurzprogramm nicht. Aber...

S: Die Kür

H: Eben. Er wird in Schlagdistanz zu Keegan Messing bleiben, und ich denke er bekommt, drei, vier Punkte mehr in den Programmkomponenten, jetzt hat er hier einen Rückstand von sechs, der Sturz sind sieben. Also das wird so, vier, fünf Punkte. Um die 90 könnte er sein, das heißt äh, da ist noch nichts verloren für ihn, auch ein zweiter Platz wäre für ihn völlig in Ordnung. Viel weniger sollte es allerdings nicht sein, aber es hat sich so ein bißchen fortgesetzt, er hat die Saison eröffnet in Bergamo bei der Lombardei Trophy und war trotz seines Sieges da nicht überzeugend. Hatte auch viele Unsicherheiten. Da war das Starterfeld, die Konkurrenz natürlich bei weitem nicht so stark wie hier bei Skate Canada und da wird er jetzt gleich die Quittung für bekommen. Trotz allem, muss man sagen, in der Kür wird es Keegan Messing schwer haben gegen Shoma Uno zu bestehen, denn da muss auch der Kanadier mehr zeigen als nur einen Vierfachen. Aber das ist natürlich schon mal ein sensationelles Ergebnis für Keegan Messing, hier vor heimischen Publikum direkt mal den Vizeweltmeister hinter sich lassen, das ist schon eine Granate.

S: Aber der Sturz war nicht die einzige Unsicherheit, auch bei der Kombination gab's Abzüge und nicht zu wenige.

H: Und ihm, da ist er auch nicht ganz auf rückwärts gelandet beim Axel. Das ist nicht das erste Mal das er Probleme mit dem Axel hat, das ist schon häufiger vorgekommen, das die vierfachen alle funktioniert haben, der Axel nicht. Ansonsten muss man sagen, hat er natürlich den höchsten Basiswert, denn anders als Keegan Messing hat er eben zwei Vierfache gezeigt, der erste, der Flip der war einwandfrei.

S: So jetzt sind wir auf die Programmkomponenten gespannt, das könnten 55 werden...äh, Programmkomponenten nicht 55, 45.

H: Nicht so viel

S: Ah, 43.

H: Oh da hat er doch...

S: Ja.

H: ...ein paar Federn lassen müssen. Sieben Punkte Rückstand zu Keegan Messing, das will erstmal aufgeholt werden. Nur ein Hundertstel vor dem Koreaner Junhwan Cha, aber das nur eine Randnotiz, der Platz zählt. Keegan Messing, der absolute Überraschungsmann des Abends.

Crowd favourite that's for sure, that's him, the little man with the big figure skating heart. Shoma Uno from Nagoya. Only second after the short, seven points behind surprise first place Keegan Messing from Canada. But then Shoma Uno showed what has to be done if you want to do a little race to catch up!

It was an awesome, awesome free program.

Moonlight Sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven, played by Vladimir Ashkenazy, and I thought at first, does that work?

It did, outstandingly so.

The third Quadruple.

Quadruple Toeloop, Double Toeloop.

And especially the Axel, so beautiful, he had problems with the jump in the short.

Yes, this was a masterpiece, also in endurance, he really had to stretch himself there, the little japanese, Shoma Uno.

A very intensive free he completed, here in Laval, and you could read it in his face. The loss of points, because he slipped a few times there at the end, wasn't dramatic. Everyone knew, he would win with this with such a performance. In the end Keegan Messung couldn't reach that either.
It was the answer of a world-class athlete, second at the Olympics, second at Worlds, twice in a row. Next year in Saitama, in his home country, it should be different, but like we said, he has sharp competition in Japan in particular.

Nevertheless it is an adventure to follow him, to see him and it's simply also a treat as well.

Cross comparison, Nathan Chen, the American won a week ago in Everett with a score of 280,57 and here with two mistakes in the free, and a huge slip in the short he gets also a score of 277, 25. So, Shoma Uno doesn't have to be overly worried yet.

Publikumsliebling sowieso, das ist er, der kleine Mann mit dem großen Eiskunstlaufherzen. Shoma Uno aus Nagoya. War nur zweiter nach dem Kurzprogramm sieben Punkte hinter dem Überraschungsersten Keegan Messing aus Kanada. Aber dann zeigte Shoma Uno was man tun muss wenn man eine kleine Aufholjagd starten möchte.

Es war eine tolle, tolle Kür.

Die Mondscheinsonate von Ludwig van Beethoven, gespielt von Vladimir Ashkenazy, und da dachte ich mir am Anfang, geht das?

Es ging ganz hervorragend!

Der dritte Vierfache.

Vierfach Toeloop- Doppel Toeloop.

Und gerade der Axel war so schön, da hatte er im Kurzprogramm Schwierigkeiten.

Ja, war auch konditionell ein Meisterwerk, er musste sich ordentlich strecken, der kleine Japaner, Shoma Uno.

Eine sehr intensiv absolvierte Kür die er hier in Laval zeigte, man sah ihm da auch deutlich an. War nicht so dramatisch, von den Punktverlusten her, das er hinten ein paar Mal ausgerutscht ist. Es war allen klar mit dieser Leistung wird er gewinnen. Da kann dann auch Keegan Messing letztlich nicht mehr hin. Und es war die Antwort eines Weltklasseathleten, Olympia Zweiter, WM Zweiter - zweimal hintereinander jetzt. Das soll im nächsten Jahr in Saitama, in seiner Heimat, das soll ja dann anders werden, aber wie gesagt, er hat gerade in Japan ganz böse Konkurrenz.

Trotzdem ist es immer wieder ein Abenteuer ihn zu verfolgen, ihn zu sehen und es ist einfach auch ein Genuss.

Zum Quervergleich, Nathan Chen, der US-Amerikaner gewann vor einer Woche in Everett mit 280, 57 Punkten und er kam hier mit zwei Fehlern in der Kür und einem Riesenpatzer im Kurzprogramm auch auf 277, 25 Punkte. Also, Shoma Uno muss sich noch keine allzu großen Sorgen machen.
