S: Aber erinnert mich auch so ein wenig an die Vorstellung in Laval, gegen Ende der Kür kamen da auch die Schwierigkeiten und die Unsicherheiten, als fehle noch ein bißchen die Kraft und die Kondition, aber die Saison Bitteschön ist lang, wir haben jetzt nicht mal ganz Mitte November und äh, fit muss er sein bei den Weltmeisterschaften in diesem Jahr, die sind der Saison Höhepunkt und die sind in Japan, die sind in Saitama und ich bin hundertprozentig sicher, da wird er auch konditionell auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Schaffenskraft sein.

H: Ja.

S: Shoma Uno, und dann sind das Ganze noch ein bißchen besser aus. Überraschung: Er wird jetzt Matteo Rizzo schlagen.

LOL no. I think he is going through another development stage (too old for puberty is he…) he looks a lot different than he did last season. More grown up and handsomer than ever, even when he’s not conscious of the camera!

“XX is important than grades or skills”

Frankly, they’re no good if they aren’t smart. I don’t mean getting good grades in school. It’s being quick to grasp; quickly discern what is the coach thinking, or what to do in practice today, without being told. Students who can do that will improve.

In my case I am not actually too interested in making the students into champions or medalists. A student who comes to us with skill level 3, we can make them go to a 5 or 7, but they will be no match for a genius who was born with level 10 skills.

Skaters who make it to the Olympics are all geniuses.

The geniuses do a genius level effort and even then they may or may not get. Medal. Only the uber genius among all geniuses will make it to the top of the world.

Midori (ito) Or Mao (Asada) just happened to become medalists but a majority of them will not.

Of course I would rather have them be first than second. But I like skaters who, even if they were fifth, everyone would say "S/he was good" or "That was a wonderful performance ".
Even Janet Lynn was third place. No one remembers who was first (at that time). Her personality shone through the different scenes of her skating and that is why we always remember her .


So I don’t scold students for not being able to do a jump or does poorly in spins etc.

It’s more about manners and behavior. When a student is sassy during puberty or is rude to a coach I say "whoa!"
"I am older than you, and your teacher. You shouldn’t talk to me like that". So it’s more about their way of life.

Midori ‘s skating showed strength of heart mixed with kindness, and Mao’s performances were honest, straightforward and sweet.

That is just show their character. Their skating shows who they are as a person.
