Oh man, in the discussion thread where people are taking one picture of him on the podium with his normal resting face on and they're saying he looks bitter and unhappy. Please! imo it has less to do with judging him by western extrovert standards or whatever and more to do with nitpicking and trying to find negative things to say about him and it's really sad and pathetic that they have to resort to that. :scowl: But I guess it's just that hard to find things to dislike about him!

Well, that too. Ah, well, what can one do. As I said in that thread, some won't let facts get in the way of a good judgement.

Hello! I just thought I'd pop in here to congratulate Shoma's fans on his wonderful free skate. He was really great today! :yes:

As much as I am happy for Max and like his programs, I thought he was very slow and very cautious (maybe saving energy for his quad in the second half?) and did not move about the rink as much.

I just wanted to mention that Max's free skate has had an almost complete choreographic overhaul since the Nebelhorn Trophy three weeks ago (and not for the better IMO), so it's unsurprising he looked a little slow. But Shoma is fast! Mega fast. I hadn't realised before.

My only other wish is that people wouldn't keep judging him and his behaviour by the standards of extroverts and Western society.

Yes. I mean, I was like, "Smile, Shoma!" but with a smile of my own, because in the close-up shots he did look really happy, even if he wasn't grinning like Max and Jason. And it probably looked even more awkward because Max and Jason are such good friends and were bubbling for each other as well as themselves.

Level 2 on his step sequence in the free. Those more expert than me, what does he need to do?

That's probably more an execution thing than anything else. If he didn't time the turns right, or skidded a little on the loop/fudged a bracket etc, all those little "on the day" things can make or break the level. They will have choreographed it with the requirements for a level 4, but sometimes it just doesn't come off.

Well done Shoma! Looking forward to seeing him grow and develop. :yay:

He was great!!!! I love everithiyng in his skating today. His performance, the music, the costume and I loved when he sang the aria, he enjoyed the skating so much!

This! It's clear that he loves the music and to see him skate his heart out to it was wonderful! I think it's important that he has this emotional connection to the program and can show it on the ice already in the beginning of the season. Once he gets his shaky jump landings fixed (if he can manage that without another/additional jump coach before the end of the season) and all the levels for his spins and steps, his TES will probably be sky-high and it'll be difficult for anyone to beat him (in the free skate at least).

It's funny how people have such varying opinions about his SP, though. I've seen comments on social media telling that some fans, TV commentators, and journalists have complained about the lack of artistry and expression, whereas I heard the Finnish commentators on YLE saying something like "he can keep the intensity throughout the program", "he expresses the music well even during the step sequence". Maybe this is a matter of personal taste and relating to the music (it is not as relatable as Turandot or some other more conventional pieces, to be honest), but I more or less agree with the Finnish commentators.

Congrats Shoma! Great recovery from the short, I had no doubt he could achieve it. He sets an option on Barcelona, what's his next GP ?
And still amazing how the quad in the second half is a better success than the first, but isn't it a mark of genius to succeed more easily difficult things?

The next one is TEB. He'll face Denis and Max again, and PChan will be there too, hopefully he can win (and severely kick P's bottom at the same time ) or at least medal to have a shot at GPF.

Aww, thanks, Karne. Nice when someone new comes in with some appreciation for Shoma. Thanks for the explanation. He was obviously conscious of it straight away as he said that to the media from what TSL tweeted so that is good. Onwards and upwards on that hopefully!
