I had so many first impressions of Shoma at Skate America, but my first was "Who is this little Japanese firecracker?" I thought he looked like he was about 12 years old! But he stepped on the ice and skated BIG! His speed and charisma were very impressive. Yes, I did think the leprechaun costume was just a little strange - but still, it was much better than some of the others where the guys look like they just reached in their closet and grabbed an old t-shirt and said "I think I'll skate in this today!" I remember thinking on his triple axel, he looked like he was shot out of a cannon! It wasn't so much the height, but rather the distance he covered on the ice. And of course when he ended with the cantilever, the audience really started cheering and many people were on their feet before he even finished. He really won the audience over. I think that if he hadn't fallen on his quad in the short program, he would have taken the gold. He was so cute when he took his bows. He had such a big smile, and he waved at the audience which struck me as very cute, since most of the other skaters didn't wave. Later when I was able to watch him on TV, the commentators were very complimentary of him and saying that he was causing quite a "stir" during practices before the competition. Kurt Browning from Canada was pretty much the same and called him a little "pocket rocket" which I thought was really funny...So what really happened was that I went to Skate America to cheer on Jason Brown, and I left a Shoma (and Jason!) fan! Loved the pairs that were there too and was so happy I got to see Sui and Han, whom I really love!...All in all, a great Skate America. I can only hope that this year's is as good. 2014 was great too. Machida was fabulous!

Thanks for sharing your experience. I was just thinking how I'm not bothered as much as I should be about his leprechaun costume and maybe it's because I remember being shocked seeing his red costume at Dreams on Ice
I can't wait to find out the GP assignments for next season. In fact, this might be the funnest part of the season for me. Then the competitions start and I start to slowly die a little bit at a time...
You're so lucky to live so close to the stadium too. I hope all your favorites are there. Jason was fabulous at WTT when I saw him even though he was the size of a match stick from where I was sitting. I want to see him from a seat where I can actually see his face next time.

I have been fortunate enough to see Jason live four times now. He is an awesome skater. One of the venues was very small so it was fun to see him up close. We also met his brother. We knew it was his brother because he looked exactly like Jason, only taller. He was very friendly, just like Jason. I think Jason has a lot of Japanese fans. I know he is learning Japanese and has a tutor. Hopefully you will see him again and be a little closer!

Thank you for sharing your Wow experience! Your vivid report really tells well about the impact of tiny Shoma gave. It was the best senior debut for him. I’m gettting excited about the new season!
Another fun to watch competitions live for me is you can watch a big screen on center of a venue. Shoma with his red cheeks wasn’t lovely?

You are lucky to see Tatuski. That was his last perfect performance. We never see such a unique program. Thank you Tatsuki, thank you Mills...:sad21:

And around March, your heart is almost... :drama:
Do you plan to go to DOI this year? I enjoyed your report last year. BTW, Stephane also did Nessun dorma there, so Shoma must have seen him.

Yes! Who can dislike him if you like figure skate? Jason is just fabulous. It’s much fun to see him and it really is the joy of figure skating.
Seeing him live is my dream!

I'm green with envy! I've been hoping he'd come for an ice show in Japan but it hasn't happened yet.

Yes, I stop breathing after Nationals is over :shock2:

No plans of going to DOI this year. I'm very lazy so I don't like traveling that far for an ice show, especially when it'll be shown on TV.
I don't think Stephane was at DOI last year... unless I'm forgetting. It was Plushy, Liza, Yuko/Sasha, Meagan/Eric iirc.
Anyway, Shoma's name hasn't been added on to the DOI list yet  I'm sure he's been invited so there must be a good reason if he's going to skip it.

Thanks for sharing your story. I can see you weren't following Shoma in his junior years and I understand why he left such a great impression. It took him a lifetime to master that 3A  in fact if you read the first bunch of pages of this thread you can see my posts celebrating his first quads and his first 3A which I saw in a shady practice video and replayed it many times to make sure it was rotated.

No I definitely didn't follow Shoma as a junior. I think sometimes we think a skater all of a sudden just "came out of nowhere". But in his case, after I saw him live, I started reading about him and watching You Tubes, etc. It was obvious that even since he was a little boy he had a wonderful artistic flair, but he couldn't get better placements because of his jump difficulties - particularly with the 3A...I followed figure skating for awhile, then stopped, then my interest rekindled again after going to the US Nationals in 2014. So it has really been fun to learn about everyone who is skating now. And I have been especially fortunate to go to a lot of competitions live which has been very exciting. I already have my tickets for 2017 US Nationals and Worlds and will buy Skate America soon, so I have a lot to look forward to. Besides our US skaters, I especially enjoy Team Japan.

Hamaguri, that made me laugh when you mentioned Shoma's pink cheeks. I noticed after he skates his LP, it's such heavy aerobic exercise that even his ears are bright pink...Yes, Tatsuki was amazing, and the audience appreciated him so much. "An American Hymn" from East of Eden is a long-time favorite song for me, so I was so happy when he used that for his exhibition. Unfortunately, as Tatsuki left the ice after Eden, we noticed he was holding his back and looked to possibly be in pain. When I watched the performance later on TV, they speculated as to whether he had re-injured his back. Philip Mills and Anthony Liu were with him in the Kiss and Cry after his short, long, and EX performances. What a great team.

About his quad flip. He practiced 4 loop in the depression of Worlds. Then, he happen to try 4 flip for change of pace and luckily got. About next season, he wants to put both 4 flip and 4 loop in his program.

Wow, next season we will be seeing so many different types of quads. And Uno only needed 3 weeks to land his first 4F? (Between Worlds and TCC) while Daisuke Takahashi tried it for years and never landed a fully rotated one.

Uno 4F, 4Lo, 4T
Hanyu 4Lo, 4S, 4T
Boyang 4Lz, 4S, 4T

And Kolyada and young ones also have quad tricks up their sleeves.

Pyeongchang is gonna be epic!

You mean Yoshinori Onishi? Tatsuki stopped training with Anthony in December 2013.

I jump back and forth between his 2013 and 2014 You Tubes so misspoke, so 2014 would have been Onishi. The best part is that he took gold at both skate Americas. Kudos to him! :cheer::points::hap93:

I think I may buy my own portable defibrillator before the Olympics. Better yet, I'll take it to Helsinki. I may need it! :dumb::palmf:

He landed a fully rotated one (or so it looked) in the 6 minute warm up at the 2011 NHK Trophy but he never managed to do it in competition. I don't know if this is correct but I've only seen him trying 4F after his knee injury in 2008. That injury almost ruined his quads.

Hi I'm not good at English. So sorry. But
I've just got the magazine "Quadruple 2016 Extra".
Shoma says "My first competition is going to U.S. International Figure Skating Classic in Next Season too" in his interview.
Is my English understandable? I just want to inform you.

I wonder if that is the one in Salt Lake City in September. I would love to see him there! Thx for the info! Trying to find out more but don't see any details online.

Shoma has white skin and it makes his face more stand out when his face burns.:luv17:
Thanks again for your experience! East of Eden! I could see it at the show after Olympics, and the music full of the venue was impressive so much. What a moving piece! Actually, about East of Eden, I’ve been familiar with the piece of the movie of James Dean (I loooove it), and didn’t know of the song of drama until tatsuki did.
Tatsuki did it as EX at SA 2015? I try to search the video later. It’s sad that he had already injury at that time.:sad21: JSF chief said after his retirement that at that time Tatsuki brought many books to study for graduate school..
Do you know about the TSL interview with Mills? He compares Tatsuki to diamond. The tone of voice is so touching, He speaks calmly, but his voice tells how he loves and admires Tatsuki. (I have trouble with listening in English skills, so I repeated the interview again and again!:drama:)

He was just planning to do so. Shoma's interview were conducted in Early Spring(After World championships). Not official assignment(yet).
I assume that ・・・ eh return-match!? Sorry for confusing.
